AtasmalltrainstationinHiroshima,Victoria, aSpanishteacherfromEcuador,hadjust arrivedwithhertwochildren,Amandáand Ichiro.Shehadbeenworkingalldayandwas takingthemtoasaferplace


VictoriahadmovedtoJapanyearsbefore becauseshelovedteachingandlearning aboutnewcultures.ShehadmetHirochi,a kindandbraveman,andtheyhadstarteda familytogether.Butthewarhadchanged everything.Hirochi,whohadbeenasoldier, hadgonetofight,andVictoriahadwaited forhimformonths Then shehadreceived theterr




Amandá,whowasfourteen,hadunderstoodthe danger.Ichiro,onlyfive,hadheldhismother’ s hand,notknowingwhatwashappening.Victoria hadtriedtostaycalm

Astheywaitedforthetrain,abrightlighthad suddenlyfilledthesky.Aloudexplosionhad shakentheground,andpeoplehadstarted runningandscreaming.
Victoriahadunderstoodthatthecityhadbeen attacked.Withoutthinking,shehadgrabbedher childrenandhadpushedthemunderametal bench.

Theheathadbeenstrong,andsmokehad coveredeverything.Victoriahadheldher childrenclose.Eventhoughshehadbeenscared, heronlythoughthadbeentokeepthemsafe.
Whentheexplosionhadended,thetrainstation hadturnedintoruins.Victoria’sarmshadstill beenwrappedaroundAmandáandIchiro.She hadusedherbodytoshieldthem.Withherlast breath,shehadwhispered:




Hourslater,rescuershadarrivedandhadfound thetwochildrenalive.Victoria’sloveand braveryhadsavedthem.

Yearslater,Amandáhadalwaysremembered hermother’ssacrifice.Ichiro,whohadbeentoo youngtoremembereverything,hadgrownup hearingthestoryofhercourageandthesound ofhervoice.


Whenpeoplehadaskedhimabouthismother,he hadansweredwithpride: — Shesavedusbecauseshelovedusmorethan anything.

AmandáandIchirohadneverforgottentheir mother’swords.Theyhadgrownupcarryingher memoryintheirhearts.Amandáhaddecidedto becomeateacher,justlikehermother,soshe couldhelpotherslearn.Ichirohadalways wantedtoprotectpeople,sohehadtrainedto becomeafirefighte


Oneevening,yearslater,Amandáhadfoundan oldnotebookthathermotherhadkept.Inside, shehadwrittenashortmessage: “Nomatterwherelifetakesyou,lovewill alwaysguideyouhome.”

Amandáhadsmiledthroughhertears.Their mother’slovehadneverleftthem.Shehad protectedthemthatday,butherwordsand kindnesshadstayedwiththemforever.


Ichirohadheldthenotebookinhishands andhadpromisedtosharehismother’ s storywiththeworld.Hehadunderstood thatloveneverfades,evenwhenlife changesforever.
