As we enter 2026 and continue stewarding our remarkable heritage, Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club (SBPRC) proudly celebrates its enduring role as the premier venue for competitive polo in the United States from April through October. We fulfill this commitment by maintaining the highest quality playing surfaces—both at our core club fields and alongside our valued field partners. Last year was a tremendous success, with six additional world-class fields in rotation alongside our three centralized club fields, and a consistently sold-out grandstand for both Sunday Polo and Friday Happy Hour events.
SBPRC offers a comprehensive and competitive array of amenities, including on-site stabling, outstanding facilities for youth polo and lessons, and a dedicated exercise track for our equine athletes. For our human athletes and members, the club also boasts a fitness center, tennis courts, and swimming pool. We take great pride in sharing these exceptional facilities with our players, members, and their families, and in fostering a vibrant, welcoming club experience.
I am delighted to welcome two new directors, Matt Yonally and Kevin Mokarow, to the Board of Directors. Serving alongside them in 2026 are Rhys Williams, Kevin Nimmons, Michele Neely, Justin Klentner, Brian Boyd, and Sy Zahedi. We are also fortunate to have a first-class management team, led with distinction by David Sigman and Melanja
Jones for the past decade, ensuring the club is exceptionally well positioned for continued strength, growth, and success.
We extend our sincere gratitude to our membership and to our many sponsors—both new and returning—whose generosity and enthusiasm sustain our very special member-run, not-for-profit club. We are energized by the direction of SBPRC and remain fully committed to growth across our ProAm, Pro Pool, and Polo Academy programs.
As a representative of the oldest continuously playing family at the club since 1953, I am keenly aware of the responsibility and privilege of ensuring that SBPRC continues to thrive in competitiveness, demand, and overall experience for generations to come.
On behalf of your Trustees and Board of Directors, it is our great pleasure to welcome you to an exceptional and celebratory 115th season at Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club!
Sincerely,
W.

The storied polo grounds next door and rambling equestrian countryside have inspired a humble, uncomplicated architectural expression that bows to the natural beauty of the pastoral setting. A rare offering, the 11.5-acre enclave, with 25 private single-family homes and 15 stylish casitas, effortlessly channels California’s signature indoor-outdoor

There are coastlines. Then there are mountains that leap out of the ocean to cradle vibrant neighborhoods and secluded enclaves in their outstretched arms.

SBPRC welcomes you to the Year of the Fire Horse! Whether you love bays or grays, thoroughbreds or Polo Argentina ponies, horse lovers unite to the thrill of four hooves flying across the manicured fields of the polo club.
Horses are 80% of the sport of polo. Their heart, their strength, and their agility—we borrow it all for the galloping game. From the calm and steady schoolmaster carrying a new student in their first lesson to a Pacific Coast Open Best Playing Pony, the sport of polo would be impossible without them.
In the Chinese zodiac, the horse represents hard work, bravery, and resilience. Behind every glamorous match, there are months of preparation and hard work. We see all kinds of bravery in polo players

and their mounts. Playing polo and riding horses, while exciting, will challenge a person in their soul. Some of the bravest people I have ever met are the ones starting a new sport in middle age over at the Polo Academy. In the thrill of high goal competition, we see players staring disaster in the eye and when in doubt, riding faster. At some point this season, we will see a team rise above a tough game with resilience and determination to ride victoriously to the trophy stand. You do not want to miss it when they do!
Sincerely,
MELANJA JONES Polo Manager

A world class facility showcasing exceptional East Coast functionality and timeless class. The 16,000 sf concrete barn sits on 20 fully usable acres and is secured by a perimeter exclusion fence which effectively eliminates ground squirrel activity across the property.
The farm is powered by a new three-phase electrical service and the private well produces 250 g/min at 115 psi. Building plans for a 3,100 sf residence are under review and both electric and water are already in place at the designated homesite. Additionally, a commercial grade diesel generator has been installed with the capacity to run the barn, the well, and future homesite.
With everything in place, this provides an exceptional opportunity to expand or customize a residence, to suit your vision, on an iconic estate in the heart of Santa Ynez.

Ten years ago, David Sigman made the jump from hotel and resort management to the world of polo. He expected to be at SBPRC for a couple of years when he committed to the role of General Manager, which he felt was a good amount of time to offer his expertise and guidance. But the longer he spent at the club, the more his work became a labor of love. He often jokes that he has never had a boring day on the job!
Early in his tenure, David faced several challenges, the biggest of which was trying to familiarize himself with the unique business model of a polo club. “I had a strong background in events and hospitality leadership roles. And I was intrigued by polo. But understanding the ins and outs of fields, barns, teams, field expenses, and horses was a big hurdle,” he admits. With advice from mentors like Chuck Lande, John Muse, Henry and Daniel Walker, Melanja Jones, and Sergio Jaramillo, to name just a few, David became cognizant of his new environment.
Not long after, David’s skills at navigating the unexpected were put to the test as he shepherded the club through the Thomas Fire, flooding and mudslides, and COVID-19. Thanks to his diligence and strong communication, he secured SBPRC as one of the first clubs in the country to safely reopen for polo during the pandemic.
More recently, David transitioned SBPRC to a venue that regularly welcomes spectators and guests. He accomplished this goal through improved PR, marketing initiatives, social media, employee retention, and good old-fashioned leg work (he has literally driven hundreds of circles around Santa Barbara giving out tickets and meeting new sponsors and partners!). These efforts have paid off tenfold: the majority of Sunday Polo events sell out with over 2,000 spectators and there is significantly increased tourism throughout the polo season.
David’s success as General Manager is rooted in his strong relationship with club staff, members, and the Trustees and Board of Directors. His management style empowers his team and inspires good work, while trusting people to succeed by their own volition. “The strong culture

of communication and respect at this club starts at the top and trickles down. The Trustees and Board are excellent at guiding the management team, while also giving us freedom to make decisions. This approach then permeates through me, Polo Manager Melanja, Facility Manager Sergio, and other leaders, to the team of staff. I strongly believe in less micromanagement, fewer meetings...and more execution! Our Friday and Sunday Polo events now run almost seamlessly because we have mastered the execution of so many details.”
Chairman of the Board of Trustees Chuck Lande hopes that David will continue to hold the reins for another decade to come and credits him with success on many levels of club engagement: “Even though the Polo Club is over 100 years old, it has been perceived by many as not ‘inviting’ to the public. David has done a great job of integrating the club further into the community as a whole. Moreover, players from all over the world, both patrons and professionals, more than ever come for the summer to play in Santa Barbara.”
One of David’s greatest joys over the last decade has been the opportunity to share the club with his family. He and his wife Jayne’s children were born during the course of his SBPRC tenure: son Lincoln in 2016, and daughter Lucille in 2019. The Sigman family are regular fixtures at polo and wholeheartedly embrace the club facilities and community: “It has been the pleasure of a lifetime raising my kids around the club— from tennis camps and swim lessons to Sunday Polo. If my son Lincoln disappears, without question we know where he is… following his hero Sergio Jaramillo around the club while carrying a lizard they caught in the garden.”

The West Coast has a legacy of excellence in arena polo, and SBPRC serves as a regional hub for arena activity, in part thanks to its central location. The arena is home to the Santa Barbara Polo Academy, which operates year-round under the leadership of Jeff Scheraga. The academy welcomes students of all ages and abilities, and thanks to the amazing stadium lighting, polo can be played as much as the day is long.
Recently, California-based players were on the winning teams of both the Federation of International Polo (FIP) Arena Polo Championship and the U.S. Open Arena Polo Championship. The club’s arena helped prepare the teams for international competition, serving as the primary training ground for USA team members Patrick Uretz, Jared Sheldon, and Kareem Rosser. Practice in the arena allowed the trio to refine their team strategy well before competing on the global stage. “It was amazing to be able to practice at the Santa Barbara arena in preparation for the FIP Championships. It has always been one of my favorite arenas, since I played there in Interscholastics,” shares Jared.
Another arena initiative is the Central Coast Arena League (CCAL), which brings players from the Los Angeles area together with those from the
Central Coast region. SBPRC is ideally situated to host CCAL tournaments, and they consistently draw a great turnout. Mia Bray notes that the CCAL tournaments include visiting and local players across multiple flights: “It’s a great opportunity for players to visit Santa Barbara, and it’s a fun thing for our members to do while we are on a break from the grass fields.”
The arena also supports intercollegiate and interscholastic programs. Jeff Scheraga and Claudia Uretz are both actively involved in coaching young players as they rise through the ranks. Assistant instructor and coach Claudia has raised four boys in the sport of polo, and welcomes the opportunity to stay in the game: “I love the sport of polo and all the joy it has brought to me and my family. Coaching the next generation is a great opportunity for me to stay involved and give back.”
For many newcomers, the arena is their entry point into the sport. Players progress from beginner lessons to intermediate arena polo programs before stepping up to coaching league on the grass fields. Arena polo is not just a complement to the competitive grass polo schedule at SBPRC; it is a year-round engine of development, competition, and community.
Community is everything at Santa Barbara Polo Club. Each season, a group of international and local players, families, grooms, trainers, and support staff come together with the members, management, and team of SBPRC to create one big, happy polo family. The even better news is that the community is growing! As our players make new vows and expand their families, we welcome the next generation to polo in paradise.
Congratulations to Jake Klentner and Natalie Ward on their recent engagement. Folded Hills’ Will Busch and Christina Tebbe were also engaged and plan to wed in May. Paige Marshall and Lt. Commander Andrew Hodges were married last October. Kyle and Maddison Ashton were also married in 2025 and welcomed baby Banks to their family in early March. Patrick Uretz and Emily Kasp were married last summer, and they welcomed baby boy Patrick...on St. Patrick’s Day!
Santi Torres and Allie Azzaro are the proud parents of baby Olivia, born in October 2024. Carlos and Ace Gracida also welcomed a baby girl, Margot, in February 2026. Jenny Alter-Blick and her husband, Corey Blick, welcomed baby boy Henry last December.
It has already been a year since Pipe Vercellino and Gordi Urquiza celebrated the birth of their son, Teo, and Jesse and Hayley Bray welcomed baby Theo. Matt Coppola and Sol Di Ciurcio also celebrated their son Crew Coppola’s 1st birthday. Most recently, Mia Bray got engaged to Fran Garcia Conde—congratulations to Mia and Fran! We look forward to celebrating all of these new additions to the Santa Barbara polo family this upcoming season.

There’s a lot more to the perfect polo field than meets the eye. Just ask Sergio Jaramillo, SBPRC Facility Manager, who is celebrating his 38th year of service as the club’s resident field expert.
Sergio started working at the club as a teenager, learning the ropes from Bill Triller, who served as facility manager for decades. “There is a lot to figure out when it comes to making great fields: how much moisture, how much sand, the amount of seed and fertilizer, and more. I have learned a lot of tricks along the way, but I am still trying to figure it all out!” remarks Jaramillo.
Polo makes use of the grass fields from April through October; however, creating the perfect polo field is a year-round affair. Even in the off-season, there is upkeep, watering, and maintenance. The most difficult part of turf management is understanding and working around the coastal weather. One of Sergio’s least favorite things is frost!
Anyone who is lucky enough to know Sergio knows that his approach to life and work is best described as “No Bad Days.” Even during the busy high goal season, when there are games day in and day out and all the fields are in use, Sergio professes that he simply loves his job. “I chose this job because I love it. This club is my home, and the people here are like family.”

Continuing a family tradition of California real estate, construction & development that dates back five generations.

Santa Barbara draws some of the sport’s greatest players to polo in paradise, and Hope Arellano is the ultimate example. At the young age of 23, Hope has had a record-breaking polo career. She was the first American to win the Women’s Argentine Open, the youngest player to win the U.S. Open Women’s Polo Championship (at the age of 14), and the first woman to compete for the U.S.A in the Federation of International Polo World Championship.
Hope’s success is rooted in her work ethic and dedication to the sport, as well as her absolute love of horses. She was only 9 years of age when she decided that she would make polo her career; a significant life decision that laid the groundwork for her becoming the youngest, and second-only, American player to achieve a 10-goal women’s outdoor handicap.
There are many dimensions to Hope’s success, from family background and natural talent, fearlessness and drive, to compassion and kindness. We were lucky enough to catch up with Hope Arellano at her home base in Wellington, Florida, to find out more about what makes her one of the best polo players in the world, as well as one of the sport’s finest young ambassadors.

Can you tell us about how you build your string?
It’s a bit of a mix! Any polo player will tell you that the biggest challenge in the sport is horses—your string is never really complete. I’m always on the lookout for new additions. Sometimes I go for young ones that need finishing, and sometimes I import from Argentina, especially if one really steals my heart.
I’ve purchased a few from my dad and several from Matias Magrini, who I lease from when I play in Argentina. Matias knows exactly how I play and what I like, and he’s great at sourcing horses.
I’m lucky that right now I have a great string but maintaining it is an ongoing challenge. So, I always do what I can to keep working on it. I’ve started doing some breeding at our farm in Aiken. None of the homebreds are playing yet but I’m very excited for when they do!
What do you look for in a polo pony?
It’s sort of like 31 different flavors of ice cream—there are so many horses out there, and everyone has a favorite type! For me, I like a pony with a low head carriage and a nice eye. I don’t mind if they’re not the most correct mover, they can be messy. What I value most are winners—the ones that have a ton of heart and give you their all every chukker.
Who have been your mentors in your career thus far?
I’ve been blessed with so many amazing mentors, both in and out of the sport. Obviously, my parents: my mom has sacrificed so much for me to get to where I am, and she helps me every day. My father is someone I look up to and try to emulate; I’ve been told I play like him, which is a huge compliment.
Dawn Jones mentored me when I was younger and gave me the opportunity to play with San Saba in the Women’s U.S. Open. Sarah Siegel Magness is also an amazing mentor and sponsor. She is not only a driver of women’s polo, she also hires women on her mixed polo teams, which has been incredible for my career. I couldn’t be more thankful.
The women’s league she founded at Cancha de Estrellas is helping to grow women’s polo in a real way. It’s the first league of its kind right in Santa Barbara, and it’s competitive polo in an encouraging and positive atmosphere.
Do you look to any other players or athletes for inspiration?
Of course! Hilario Ulloa is a huge inspiration for his horsemanship. Facundo Pieres is just an amazing player. On the women’s side, Nina Clarkin is the epitome of class, and I really admire that she’s still at the top of the sport after so many years of success, and she also made time to have a family.
Outside of polo, I admire the late Kobe Bryant. Obviously, basketball is a very different sport, but his approach to strategy and mentality was so inspiring. I also look up to Rafael Nadal because he is such a great, well-rounded athlete.
How do you mentally prepare for each match?
I’m blessed to be mentally strong. I don’t really get nervous before games. My parents were instrumental in that, teaching me to be physically and mentally prepared from a young age, and now it just comes naturally. I also learned from watching how my dad handled himself as a professional player for years. I try to always keep in mind that we only put as much pressure on ourselves as we can handle, which helps me keep things in perspective.
Do you have any advice for new players looking to improve in the sport?
It sounds cliché but I really believe that hard work always pays off. You can accomplish anything you dream of, as long as you accept that it is not always going to be easy, and you are willing to completely dedicate yourself to the challenge.

Hope’s 10-year-old mare, Cinco de Mayo, is an important member of the Arellano family. Julio, Hope’s father, purchased Cinco as a young horse, and after training and playing under Julio, she joined Hope’s string.
Cinco has a strong sense of self-worth and self-preservation, making her one of the barn favorites. “She is very much the queen of the barn and of my string! She’s an angel to any people who visit, but a witch to all the other horses. You can’t help but love Cinco; she’s got tons of personality and is all heart.”

Can you tell us about your role as an ambassador for a number of polo brands, including U.S. Polo Assn.?
I’m so blessed to be able to work with a brand that gives back to the sport and has such great values. They support clubs across the country, and on top of that, they are a wonderful group of people. I’m grateful to be a part of the U.S. Polo Assn. organization.
I have been approached by a lot of other brands as well, but I’m fairly selective and I only work with brands that I love, use, or care strongly about. As a polo player I need a lot of gear, so working with brands such as Ona helps me keep myself in the best equipment!
You also give back to the sport as a mentor and volunteer; can you tell us about your Girls Polo Camp initiative?
I founded the Girls Polo Camp because I realized there was nothing in the sport that gave opportunities to girls and young women. It has been a really fun event that we will continue to host every September in Aiken. We have hosted girls from across the U.S. and Europe as well. We limit each camp to six girls so that it remains an intimate group, and everyone learns a lot. I’m considering doing a similar event geared toward adult women in the sport, so stay tuned for that!

and she is well known around many polo clubs. My mom is always trying to steal her, and I joke that we have shared custody.
When did you first start playing in Santa Barbara?
My mom grew up in California, so I have a huge love for Cali in my heart. But my first experience playing professionally in Santa Barbara was a few years ago with La Karina. That was when I really fell in love with the place. Between the mountains, the beach, and the polo, it’s really hard to have a bad day.
What makes the club and community special, in your mind?
Santa Barbara is one of a kind. It’s a great club with extremely competitive polo, good people, and a great atmosphere. Melanja, Mia, and Judith are amazing; they run a tight ship and they make it look easy. On my days off I like to play tennis, go hiking, and hit the beach. Last year, I got to spend five months in Santa Barbara, and I never got tired of it! This year due to an injury, I won’t be able to compete in Santa Barbara, and I will really miss it. It’s a truly magical place.
Do you have a favorite game or win in your career so far?
I have had so many memorable wins and have played on so many great teams. I like to say that the losses are just as memorable as the wins because you always learn something along the way. If I had to pick just one favorite, though, it would be the family team of me, my dad, and my two brothers Lucas and Augustin, when we played a 12 Goal tournament in Aiken. It was the first time we all played together as a family, and we won!
What are your goals for the future?
A lot of people ask me, “what’s next?” because I reached 10 goals at a pretty young age. But I still have a lot that I want to achieve. To start, I want to play more high goal mixed polo and push myself to get better at that level. I also want to keep building my string. To have a successful career, I need to push myself every day and every season to keep improving.

Perfectly nestled between the Pacific Ocean and Santa Ynez Mountains, on the green acres to the northeast of the polo club is a one-of-a-kind development. New luxury construction, the perfect location along Via Real between Carpinteria and Montecito (a short bike ride from Padaro Beach and Loon Point), and homes with square footage that families desire make this one of the most coveted coastal enclaves in Santa Barbara. Polo’s ties to the collection of inspired dwellings are as intriguing as the development itself.

The stunning 11.5-acre estate, located a stone’s throw from the polo club, was first purchased by Major Fleischmann in 1923. An avid outdoorsman and polo enthusiast, Fleischmann purchased multiple parcels of land in order to secure the sport’s future in the region.
In the 1970s, the esteemed Holden family took ownership of the property. During the ensuing decades, the estate’s cottages, barns, and facilities served as a home base for Ambassador Holden, his wife Gloria, and their family of players, ponies, and
friends. The estate was an extension of the club itself, where generations of local and international polo families experienced the dedication and generosity of the Holdens.
After hanging up his Gehache Polo jersey and retiring from competitive play, Holden made the difficult decision to sell the eminent homesite. The land passed through a few owners before returning to the hands of polo player and past President of the club, John Muse. In 2023, Chuck Lande, Chairman of the Trustees, purchased the property, and his family’s
vision for a new residential community, The Santa Barbara Polo Residences, was born.
Like the Holdens, Chuck and Margarita Lande’s ties to the polo club extend back several decades, underscoring their intention to respect and celebrate the prestigious heritage of the land. They hired esteemed architect Robert Hidey, and plans were soon underway for a new development that would provide continuity of polo tradition, while also creating inspired living opportunities for future generations.

In line with the Landes’ vision, The Santa Barbara Polo Residences offer a one-of-a-kind private enclave steeped in the California polo lifestyle. In the elegantly situated family homes, the country ranch-style architecture is complemented by native stone and wood exterior detailing. Modern, airy interiors give way to generous covered patios, creating a seamless
indoor-outdoor oasis for living and entertaining. The smaller-scale residences, aptly named the Casitas, offer convenience and flexibility for individuals and families seeking coastal getaways or year-round maintenance-free living.
Equally well-planned and situated as the homes themselves, the landscape architec-
ture by internationally acclaimed Girven Associates evokes a strong sense of place and quality while similarly respecting the goals of sustainability and land preservation. The development also boasts generous community living space, including walking trails, a creek corridor, and gathering areas, which honor the healthy lifestyle that defines the American Riviera.

To understand how The Santa Barbara Polo Residences complement and celebrate the region’s polo heritage, a visit is truly in order. The thoughtfulness of every detail, from architecture and landscape to family-friendly design and décor feel like polo. Not only do residents share in the spirit of the hundreds of polo ponies in play from May through October, with
membership they also have immediate access to year-round benefits of the club, from tennis, swim, and fitness to arena polo and exclusive social events. The Santa Barbara Polo Residences offer a new way for families to experience the exclusive community- and family-oriented polo lifestyle of Santa Barbara and ensure that this unique way of life carries on for generations to come.
“This is a setting where the polo fields, the foothills, and the ocean all come together in a very natural way. The residences are seamlessly woven into both the landscape and the polo heritage that define this place. It creates an experience that feels authentic and rooted in tradition.”
—Chuck Lande

Drone footage has become an essential component of modern polo broadcasting and officiating. Until recently, you could count the total number of drone pilots specializing in polo on one hand, but thanks to the pioneering work of Lacey Winterton from PoloZONE, as well as the USPA Umpires LLC, drone piloting is a profession now at the forefront of the sport.
Lacey first picked up a drone in 2014 and admits that in the beginning, she was “just playing around.” But as she honed her skills, she recognized how precisely the bird’s-eye view captured nuances of the game, and she began to take her hobby much more seriously. Fast-forward a dozen years, and Lacey is now one of the top polo drone pilots in North America and is training new pilots to follow in her footsteps.
Drone flight control is technical and intuitive, requiring the simultaneous coordination of two joysticks and two dials, to fluidly control both the drone and the camera. The immense size of the polo field and the comparatively small size of the polo ball add another layer of difficulty. Like any skill, mastery requires thousands of hours of practice.
For Lacey, the ultimate perspective is directly above and behind the hitter, following the play as it moves up the field. The challenge is to never lose track of the ball, especially when it disappears into a cluster of players, which is often where fouls occur and the drone’s perspective is most valuable to officials. Every pilot must also anticipate quick changes in direction and lots of high-speed action!
In order to maximize her view, reduce glare, and maintain focus throughout games, Lacey has a set of effective rituals: she sits in her car with the music on, wears a big hat, and lowers all visors so that her screen is as sharp as possible. From the sidelines, she might appear to be tuning out the game, but in fact the opposite is true: she is intensely focused and has the best seat in the house.

With drone technology’s dominant new role in polo, there is a growing demand for pilots who not only know how to fly, but who understand the sport: “Teaching technology is one thing, but teaching the ins and outs of the sport, as well as the ability to read and anticipate plays, takes years to learn. People who have watched thousands of games already know where the ball is going to go, and that’s a huge advantage.”
Footage of polo initially relied on just two sources: sideline cameras and umpire point-of-view cameras. Today, drone footage provides a crucial third angle: the bird’s-eye view. With over 90% of high goal games now filmed by drone, game officials are able to review play from various angles, with drone footage often being the most decisive: “The bird’s-eye view provided by the drone elucidates the line of the ball. It removes ambiguity with respect to calling and challenging fouls, and this has had a positive impact on the sport overall,” suggests Lacey.

Polo matches are traditionally officiated by two mounted umpires and a third man situated on the sidelines. With drone technology, game officiating has expanded to incorporate instant replay officials (IROs). Feeds from both the sideline camera and the drone are routed into an IRO van, where the officials can switch between camera views and slow down the footage to review key moments, particularly when a team challenges a call. The future of polo officiating has truly arrived.
Drone footage has also impacted the proliferation of livestreamed and broadcast games. Polo fans can now watch polo online at uspolo.org, on the USPA YouTube channel, and even on ESPN. Play-by-Play Announcer for USPA Polo Network, Toby Wayman, suggests that drone footage has “completely revolutionized the game of polo from an umpiring as well as a spectating perspective. It’s the single most important piece of equipment that’s brought the game into the 21st century.” Thanks to the work of Lacey and an increasing number of drone pilots, polo has come in closer line with professional sports broadcasting, and you can watch high goal polo, including the Pacific Coast Open, from almost anywhere in the world.

We translate this identity into modern sportswear through clean lines, balanced proportions, and refined detailing. The result is understated, confident apparel rooted in sporting tradition and inspired by the effortless lifestyle of the California coast.

PLAYED BY IÑAKI LAPRIDA
U.S. POLO ASSN. Pacific Coast Open
Winner of Best Playing Pony honors in the 2025 U.S. POLO ASSN. Pacific Coast Open was a homebred out of the Laprida breeding program. The 10-year-old mare, El Biceps Slash, is by Gete Argos, a stallion that Iñaki’s brother, Magoo Laprida, played for many years. Her dam, Ferrari Slash, was a mare that Iñaki played extensively in Argentina. Her distinctive name is a tribute to the lead guitarist of Guns N’ Roses, Iñaki’s favorite rock band.
Known for her impressive presence and professional demeanor, El Biceps Slash is recognizable by her distinctive coloring. At birth, she resembled a buckskin, leading Iñaki to question whether the mare had truly been sired by Gete Argos. As she grew, she began to gray out and eventually developed a deep flea-bitten coat that now gives her a distinctive roan-like appearance.
El Biceps Slash has an impressive resume: in 2024, she played under Magoo Laprida in a host of major tournaments during the Argentine season, including the Copa Remonta y Veterinaria and the Copa Cámara de Diputados. After Iñaki imported her to the U.S., she rose to the top of his string in the 2025 Gauntlet of Polo in Wellington, and in the 16 Goal Series in Santa Barbara.
Iñaki is very proud of the mare’s achievement: “It’s an amazing award and means even more as it is a mare from my family’s breeding program. It is also an honor for my groom who takes great care of her.”

Tita is no stranger to the fields of the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club. She was initially imported from Argentina to play for Max Menini. She was later sold by Menini to Paige Beard, who also enjoyed playing her in Santa Barbara. In 2021, Cory Williams purchased Tita and the mare became a staple of Williams’ string for a number of years. Today, she is owned by Santa Barbara Pro Pool player Maxwell Walshaw, who is grateful to have Tita’s experience guiding him on the field.
Tita has an uncanny ability to know what is about to happen before her rider does. Cory remarks, “She has the softest mouth, she is balanced and quick in the turns, and she stops the moment you think about it.” Tita has also been a mainstay in Cory’s lesson string and has given countless members hours in the saddle at the beginning of their polo careers. Her talent with these up-andcoming players factored into Cory’s decision to sell Tita to Maxwell at the end of the 2025 season.
It takes a pretty special pony to win the Club Pony of the Year Award, and it is as much a reflection on the current owner, Maxwell, and current manager, Cory, as it is on the pony. Cory proudly comments that “Tita was deserving of this award because of her consistency, honesty, and willingness.” An incredibly versatile pony, Tita can be played in mixed 8 Goal or women’s 18 Goal, or she can teach a lesson to a total beginner without putting a hoof out of place. This makes her truly one-of-a-kind.
Originally part of a 1,200-acre estate, this historic 1924 property traces back to Max Fleischmann, a visionary philanthropist whose early influence helped shape the evolution of The Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club. (Fleishmann Field - Est. 1929) Today, the estate’s remaining 12+/- acres reflect that legacy: five buildings include a main residence designed by Johnson, Kaufmann, and Coate, mature orchards, extensive organic gardens, and rare proximity to both the coastline and the fields that defined an era. Thoughtfully preserved under Pacifica Graduate Institute’s stewardship since 1989, the estate has maintained its historic significance. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reimagine a private residential compound rooted in California’s coastal and equestrian heritage. 249 Lambert Road | Carpinteria, CA | Price Upon Request

Since 2021, photographer Michelle Lauren has been a fixture at the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club. Guests and members rave about Michelle’s ability to capture elegant equine and human subjects, as well as portray the passion and style of every event. Meet Michelle at Sunday Polo (she is typically sporting a distinctive red plaid hat and slinging her Canon cameras) to discover that her genuine excitement and heartwarming personality are nothing short of magical as well.

When did your passion for photography begin?
When I was young, I used to visit my family on the Gulf Coast of Florida every summer. They bought me a really cute bike, and I would ride it to the coast, often at sunset. I found myself mesmerized by the beauty of the ocean and the sunset and I wanted to capture it and share it with everyone! I borrowed my grandmother’s point-and-shoot camera and took hundreds of pictures of that same sunset. Even though the view stayed the same, each photo felt different to me because I could feel my own perspective growing behind the lens.
When did your passion turn into a career?
When I was out of high school, I took a black-and-white photography course at City College, and I was blown away by the art and alchemy of it all—it was magical and really took hold of me. From there I decided to pursue photography professionally. I attended Brooks Institute of Photography and started my event photography business during the course of my studies.
Do you have a favorite subject or series of photos?
I have always loved portraiture and capturing special events. I’m lucky that Santa Barbara is such a popular destination for weddings; living here allows me to shoot so many memories of families and friends coming together.
I also enjoy more diverse photography as well, like fine art and seascapes. My favorite is my abstract seascapes series, which is an ever-expanding body of work compiled over the last 20 years.
What led you to the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club?
David Sigman has been a friend for years, and he invited me to Sunday Polo. After that first Sunday I was hooked! The vibe at the club is very relaxed, yet the energy of the game is exhilarating. I don’t think my excitement for Sunday Polo has faded since my very first day on the job. There’s something so special about the atmosphere, the horses, the players, and the beautiful backdrop at the club. On top of that, the polo community is so welcoming and family-oriented. Many players, spectators, and families come back annually; it’s fun to capture the next generation of polo fans and players.
What is your favorite part of your profession?
I love being behind the camera, and every time I shoot an event, whether it is Sunday Polo or a wedding, I try to capture the story of that special day. I don’t just take quick photos; I like to talk to people, welcome them, and make sure they are enjoying themselves—some of my favorite people to meet are those who are experiencing their very first polo match!
I also love to share all of my images with guests, members, and players. A few days after each polo event, all photos are available on my online gallery, and anyone is welcome to download their favorite image, print it, or share it on social media. For me, this is a great way to preserve and celebrate their polo experience for years to come.
Michelle Lauren lives in Santa Barbara with her wife, Meara, and daughter, Era. Her image gallery can be found online at www.michellelauren.com.
