When i was 14, about to leave my comfortable surroundings for a boarding school in the woods of n ew h ampshire, my father and i sat down for one of our very few serious talks.
he looked at me and said, “Son, my job is almost complete. i can give you one of the nation’s finest educations. i can show myself to be a good person and hope that you follow that lead, but i can’t make you a good person. Only you have that power, fueled by the choices you make. Make the choice to give as much as you take, and everything else in your life will fall into place.”
i confess that i didn’t fully comprehend his meaning at the time, but slowly i came to realize that if i gave my most precious resource—my time—then i could make an impact. i also realized that better things came my way if i gave my time to those who could put it to good use. i got something out of volunteering, and it took me a while to realize that that was not just OK, it was the point!
Volunteers at the Chamber do so for a variety of reasons. Some will volunteer for the pure enjoyment that comes from giving their time. Others do so in order to help build their own business by finding significant ways to be known and to know others. Some of our volunteers are working to help rise the tide for all businesses in our organization. Why someone volunteers is not important. i t is the fact that people have made the choice to volunteer at the Chamber that makes our organization stronger.
To the more than 200 individuals who make the choice to give their time and talents to make the Chamber a better organization, we wish to thank you from the bottom of our hearts. you make the difference!

Gateway to Mcdowell Sonoran Preserve opens
The City of Scottsdale, along with the McDowell Sonoran Preserve Commission and the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy, hosted the gateway to the Preserve Dedication on May 2. An open house included demonstrations, educational information and wildlife animal exhibits, while conservancy stewards led short hikes, and equestrian and bicycle rides.
A formal dedication included Vice Mayor Ron McCullagh, State Senator Carolyn Allen, artist and preserve advocate Pete Chasar, and McDowell Sonoran Conservancy and McDowell Sonoran Preserve Commission representatives.

george “Doc” R. Cavalliere, the patriarch of the pioneer Cavalliere family at 92, and the eldest living Scottsdale native, was helped by dozens of longtime friends including Scottsdale Mayor Jim Lane to observe 100 years since the family established residence in the then tiny, dusty village of Scottsdale. Doc’s parents, Mary Alice and george S. “Cavie” Cavalliere were both teenagers when they arrived in 1909 to put down roots and open the Cavalliere blacksmith Shop & Ornamental ironworks in 1910. The historic business is still operated today at 3805 n brown Ave. in Old Town by Doc’s son, george A. Cavalliere.

Rotary club of Scottsdale
A member since 1991, Tom has been active in Rotary, a worldwide organization made up of business professionals that focuses on four areas: club, community, vocational and international service. The Scottsdale Rotary has more than 40 committees that serve these areas of service, ranging from Computers for Kids to the Salvation Army.
“The Rotary is important to me because, at the local level, it is an organization that provides fellowship for leaders in our area, as well as financial assistance for local high school students and more,” says Tom, who served as the Scottsdale Rotary’s president in 2005. “At the international level, the Rotary has helped eradicate polio throughout the world.”
Tom is also dedicated to the work of Scottsdale healthcare, where he has been for 23 years.
“As a nonprofit healthcare system, we provide a substantial amount of resources and investment in the community we’ve served since 1962,” he says.

Packages from home
Started in 2004 by a mother whose son was serving in iraq, Packages from home provides food, personal care and recreational items to deployed American troops. The organization averages 1,000 to 1,5000 packages a month, containing donated items including nonperishable food, toiletries, games, books, CDs and DVDs.
The Phoenix-based nonprofit collects donations at a number of drop-off locations throughout the Valley. Thanks to a dedicated staff and volunteers, items are packed and mailed to united States service men and women around the world.
“Packages from h ome is one of my favorite charities. Each year, all of our shopping centers collect items to send to our troops abroad and then we have a “packing party” to package all the items we have collected for shipping to our soldiers,” says Steve. “ i n three years, we have sent more than 700 packages to our troops. This is a great organization that helps our soldiers know how much they are appreciated.”

Jobing foundation
Committed to helping people find better jobs and career opportunities to improve their lives, the Jobing foundation was created in January 2008 through a grant from Jobing.com. Today, the foundation creates programs, provides volunteer opportunities, and supports educational outlets in cities and communities throughout the country.
“Through Jobing foundation, i volunteer in various workforce development events throughout the Valley, including workshops and presentations on resume writing, interviewing and other workforce related topics,” says holly.
The foundation also hosts a number of programs that give job seekers the extra tools they need to be successful in their job search, including Experience your future Day, an interactive experience for high school students to gain hands-on exposure to a variety of industries.
“About 7,000 local eighth graders from Scottsdale, Tempe and Peoria attended this career event to learn about future career opportunities,” she says.

Merestone Meeting & Event Services
Shakespeare’s famous phrase, “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players,” holds more true in the business world than one may think. That’s because meetings and events are a key factor in not only promoting businesses, but also in inspiring and rewarding employees.
no one knows that better than Merestone, a Scottsdale-based meeting and event services group that has been producing events for nearly 35 years.
“We started in our own backyard with a small business client,” says Camille hill, Merestone cofounder and president.
hill and her husband Ted started the company in 1974 under the name unique inc. Ted was a still photographer in hollywood, where he learned about theatrical set construction. Camille, who hails from Michigan, moved to Arizona as a young girl and went on to earn her degree in scenic design. Together, they decided to put their stage and scene production experience to use and started their company.
“We began in scenic and theatrical lighting and design, which evolved into producing meetings and events,” says Camille. “it was a natural fit.”
Today, Merestone produces events in the Valley and throughout the united States. With a full-service creative team and an inventory of more than 35,000 items ranging from staging, audio and lighting to special effects, set and props, the company is poised
to meet even the most challenging client requests.
“We’ll do as much or as little as a client wants,” says Camille. “We start from the very beginning and define what they want to achieve including scheduling, flow, technical aspects and set building. Everything we have is in-house. it’s like plugging straight into the wall.”
it doesn’t stop there, however. Merestone also offers film, video, audio and visual services; can create and stage scenic environments and signage; and book high-profile entertainment and speakers
The scope of their work is not lost on the industry or their peers. Last year, Merestone received seven awards at the ZOniES, presented by the Arizona Chapter of the international Special Event Society, as well as two awards for excellence in videography and animation from the international Videographer Awards. The company is also a Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce Sterling Award winner.
hill attributes much of the company’s success to its dedicated staff. The family-run business—the hill’s oldest son is vice president and youngest son is an account executive—has 35 to 50 full-time employees, with more than 150 independent contractors coming on board during the height of the meeting and event season.

Scottsdale@Work spoke with Camille Hill, president of Merestone, about life in the meeting and event services industry:
Today’s meetings and events have been elevated beyond the basic carousel slide presentation. How has the industry evolved since you started?
Technology has truly made an impact in the industry. Without it, we wouldn’t be able to keep up. With computers, we’re doing fully animated presentations with special effects and innovations in sound and quality. Sometimes we feel like we don’t know how we’re going to keep up and we turn around and found out we just did.
What types of new things are your clients looking for?
because we’re so diverse and have access to an incredible amount of resources in-house, we’re able to provide our clients with almost anything they dream up. however, to make a lasting impression and impact, there’s nothing more powerful than moving imagery on screen, video and animation capabilities.
What has been your most memorable event?
years ago, we did a program for xerox at the former Phoenix Civic Plaza that featured a performance by the Smothers brothers inside Symphony hall. Suddenly, a hurricane-force wind hit and literally wiped everything off the plaza. With little time to spare, our team rallied together and attacked the mess 10 feet at a time until the whole thing was cleaned and set back up. it was a true testament to the power of many focused on one goal.

East Valley chambers of commerce Alliance - May legislative Update
As a member of the Scottsdale Area Chamber, you are part of the largest business lobbying organization in the state. Representing more than 7,300 Arizona businesses, the EVCCA is a coalition of seven chambers of commerce united by a common business agenda and an interest to protect businesses from the unintended consequences of legislation. A direct benefit of this partnership [with the EVCA ] means Scottsdale based businesses have a stronger, more influ ential voice at the state capitol.
Members of the Chamber’s Public Policy Advisory Council (PPAC) make recommendations on chamber positions and action to the Chamber board of Directors and are responsible for anticipating, defining and performing research on policies, projects, proposed legislation, trends, etc. that may influence the Scottsdale business community.
The budget impasse continues to be the focus of the Arizona Legislature. Lawmakers are challenged to address a $3.4 billion deficit in fiscal year 2010. A number of proposals from Republicans and Democrats have been circulated at the Capitol with little consensus. Similarly, public opinion polls demonstrate mixed feelings about revenue generation, a tax increase and significant state program cuts. ideas of note to the business community receiving attention include:
initiative Reform
Slightly more than 40 percent of the state budget is inaccessible because the revenues are part of previous ballot proposition. Some lawmakers are suggesting an initiative that would allow the Legislature to access these funds in times of a fiscal crisis.
Agency cuts
Across the board, Arizona state agencies will be cut as an element of any budget fix.
Privatization
Privatization of appropriate state services continues to be a topic of discussion in budget deliberations. The Alliance believes the private sector can assist with many government services amid a down economy.
Asset divestiture
from prisons to hospitals, the Legislature is taking stock of its assets. Sale and leaseback of state assets provides one-time money, but may be an option for bridging the budget gap.
higher Education Rollovers
Much like the K-12 rollover used in past fiscal years, lawmakers are considering withholding the final payment of this fiscal year to community colleges and state universities until next fiscal year. This budget trick could make $75 million available next fiscal year.
Tax increases
A number of tax increases are under consideration at the Capitol. ideas submitted by Republicans and Democrats include:
n Temporary State Transaction Privilege Tax (Sales) Tax – As a last resort, gov. brewer suggested a temporary tax increase to generate $1 billion next year. While the governor has not indicated which tax should be increased, only an additional $.01 sales tax would generate the $1 billion she cited in an address to the Legislature.
n State Equalization Tax Reinstatement – The State Equalization Property Tax that was suspended three years ago would be allowed to go back into effect under a proposal suggested by Democrats. The tax would hit businesses harder than other property tax classifications and would generate nearly $250 million for the state.

The Venezuela-born, harvard-educated leader of the Scottsdale Cultural Council started his career as an accomplished composer before entering the realm of nonprofit administration for art and music education. Today, he oversees the council and its mission of creating diverse arts experiences and opportunities in Scottsdale.
Since joining the organization in 2008, banchs has been busy working on its strategic plan while overseeing the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts’ renovation, which began last year and is expected to be completed this fall.
“With today’s economic environment, the challenge has been making sure the most important and essential components of the renovation remain intact, those that ensure the capacity of the center to enable state-of-theart performances and presentations,” he says. “Once the renovation is done, the center will significantly elevate and enhance its capacity, quality and diversity of programming.”
