Local News Bike lanes review by Yarra Council ■ “Yarra City Council has approved the baseline concept design plan for the Elizabeth St Cycling Corridor that will restore car parking spaces while maintaining protected bike lanes,” according to a Council statement. “The plan strikes a sensible balance that incorporates all high and medium-risk recommendations including sightline requirements from the Road Safety Audit.” “This street is home to hundreds of people – a resilient community, many of them from refugee backgrounds, that have had access to their homes, their businesses and their temple severely disrupted through the removal of parking,” said Yarra City Council Mayor, Cr Stephen Jolly. “So, what we’ve done, is tried to reach a sensible and practical compromise that restores parking while maintaining a safe cycling route.”

$1.7b Market plan ■ A three-tower development will be built on the southern edge of the Queen Victoria Market amid claims that the site’s heritage was being bulldozed and that the project would create a “great big south wall’’, freports the Herald Sun. The Federal Government approved the $1.7bn Lendlease project, known as Gurrowa Place, after a review found that it would not impact the heritage of the 140year-old market, the newspaper reports. “Former Premier and architect Ted Baillieu said heritage considerations had been ignored at the project which would include a 49-storey student accommodation tower, a 46-level apartment block and an office building with 28 floors,” it said.
■ Homicide Squad detectives have charged a man in relation to the death of Samantha Mizzi in St Kilda over 30 years ago. A 67-year-old man was arrested in Ararat. He has been charged with murder and two counts of rape and was to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court. The charges follow the fatal assault of Samantha Mizzi in St Kilda on March 29, 1994. The body of the 24-year-old Castlemaine woman was located by a passerby in bushes at the rear of a property on Brighton Rd about 11pm that night. She was conveyed to hospital but passed away the following morning. The investigation into the incident remains ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Detective Inspector Dean Thomas, Homicide Squad, said: “Today’s arrest and charges highlight that it doesn’t matter how many years have passed, detectives remain committed to holding those who are involved violent crimes to account. “It also shows that progress can be made on cases, even after decades have passed, and that we can begin the process of providing families with long-needed answers. “If there are people out there who have information about a crime such as this, no matter how many years have passed, I can assure you that it’s never too late to come forward.”
Suspicious fire at Inkerman St

■ Fire Rescue Victoria firefighters responded to an incident at 8.41am Wednesday (Aug. 13) on Inkerman St, St Kilda, after callers to Triple Zero (000) reported smoke coming from a building roof. Firefighters arrived on scene within three minutes to find a single storey weatherboard house, approximately 10m by 15m, well alight and threatening adjoining properties. Crews worked to extinguish the blaze with no damage to nearby properties. No one was inside at the time. Three people were evacuated from neighbouring premises and handed to Ambulance Victoria. The scene was deemed ‘Under Control’ at 9.05am. Victoria Police were also in attendance. The fire was deemed suspicious and the scene was handed to Victoria Police for further investigation.
