■ Melbourne Water and Glen Eira Council have hired a new Litter Action Plan Officer as part of a suite of litter-busting measures to keep Elster Creek beautiful. Hannan is based at Glen Eira Council, which is responsible for managing most of the extensive drainage system in the Elster Creek catchment. Glen Eira Mayor Cr Simone Zmood said that tackling litter in the Elster Creek catchment is an integral part of the health of the local waterways.

■ Jacqueline Pascarl has been named Bayside Citizen of the Year for her exceptional contributions to the Bayside community and beyond. WORRY OVER PESUTTO $2.4M LEGAL BILL ■ Hawthorn MLA John Pesutto potentially faces financial ruin if Moira Deeming is successful in claiming $2.4 million in legal costs, major media speculates. The Age newspaper reported late last week that Mr Pesutto might go close to bankruptcy if a legal costs application went against hi, following his defamation case loss against Ms Deeming. Mr Pesutto was financially backed to some degree by former Premiers Jeff Kennett, Ted Baillieu and Denis Napthine. “Bankruptcy would force Pesutto out of politics, triggering a by-election for his marginal seat of Hawthorn,” The Age said. “Pesutto was ordered to pay Deeming $300,000 in damages, as well as her legal bill, when the Federal Court in December found he repeatedly defamed hetr by falsely implying she associated with neo-Nazis. “Deeming’s team is seeking almost $2.4 million in costs which would push Pesutto perilously close to bankruptcy,” said The Age.

COUNCIL FIGHTS CONGESTION LEVY
● Cr Melina Sehr ■ The City of Stonnington says that it is standing up for its residents, businesses, and visitors by opposing the State Government’s expanded Congestion Levy. This is a new tax on all paid public car spaces west of Williams Rd, that will significantly increase parking costs and take millions away from the community, the Council says. “The levy will apply to four multi-deck and five at-grade Council car parks,” a Council representative said. “It is yet another new tax grab by the government costing local ratepayers an estimated $4.1 million per year in its first year alone. “Instead of staying in Stonnington to fund local services, this money will go straight to the Victorian State Government, with no clear benefit to our community. Stonnington Mayor Cr Melina Sehr said Council had no choice but to push back against another financial hit on residents and businesses. “This levy is a tax on our community. It will make parking more expensive, add pressure to local businesses, and could force Council to cut back on the services our residents rely on,” Cr Sehr said.
