Carnegie park
■ Glen Eira Council has purchased the land at 93 Mimosa Rd, Carnegie, to create a new local park. “This initiative is part of our Open Space Strategy, which aims to make our city more liveable, healthy, and sustainable,” said a Glen Eira Council represerntative. “This site was secured through a Public Acquisition Overlay, using funds from the Open Space Reserve. “Similar projects at Archibald and Gisborne Sts in Elsternwick, and Porter Rd in Bentleigh have successfully increased open space and were met with strong local support. We look forward to delivering similar benefits to Carnegie. “To prepare the site safely, the existing house will be removed, and the land will be grassed over as a temporary measure. This ensures an accessible space where the community can relax, connect, and play. “We are committed to expanding access to high-quality open spaces and will continue advocating on behalf of our community for funding,” the Council representative said.
BLOW FOR MARINA ■ The Australian Marina Development Corporation will not be proceeding with the redevelopment of the St Kilda Marina. Port Phillip Council says it has a “contingency plan” in place. The Counncil claims the redevelopment is moving forward. “Our Council entered into a long-term lease with AMDC in 2020 to redevelop the Marina. “Since then, there have been changes in the broader economy, significant rises in construction costs and continued uncertainty with historical soil contamination across the site, despite Council’s willingness to increase its contribution to managing the contamination.” Turn to P3

VOW TO DUMP RAIL LOOP ● Peter Dutton, Opposition Leader
■ Federal Opposition Leader Peter Dutton, if elected on May 3, has vowed to drop funding for the Suburban Rail Loop. Mr Dutton says he will scrap Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s commitment of $2.2 billion to the Loop. He plans to redirect $4.2 billion earmarked for Victoria to other road and rail projects, including $1.5 billion for Melbourne Airport Rail. State Premier Jacinta Allan is determined to continue with the Suburban Rail Loop, as she says it forms the basis of Melbourne’s future housing strategy. Ms Allan is stakingher government’s political future on its $34.5 billion Stage One of the loop between Cheltenham and Box Hill. Infrastructure Australia warns cost blowouts brought the viability of the project into question and is urging the State Government to develop an exit strategy. Mr Dutton said that the Suburban Rail Loop is “a project that everyone knows would never be delivered”.
