Local News Manager welcome ■ Brighton MLA James Newbury has welcomed the new manager of Mayflower, a Brighton-based residential aged care home with 150 beds and additional independent living units. “I joined the new chief executive officer Paul Gregersen and residents to talk about local challenges and opportunities. Their active interests were incredibly insightful. Welcome, Paul, into the role,” Mr Newbury said.

WHY ARE MONITORS AT KINGSTON CL?

Crossing call ■ Sandringham MLA Brad Rowswell has told State Parliament: “For quite literally years I have been working with our local community and calling for the Government to remove the level crossings at Wickham Rd and Highett Rd in the suburb of Highett in my constituency. “These level crossings are a hazard to my community and cause excess congestion on our roads,” Mr Rowswell said. “Our residents are stuck at these level crossings every single day and are deeply concerned about the Graham Rd development, the Gas and Fuel development, the development of the Suburban Rail Loop just down the road and the impact that will have on congestion in the area. “Further, constituents are also concerned about the possibility of sky rail being developed instead of a rail-under-road option and not being consulted by this government. “I ask: when will this Government actually consult with my community and simply get on with getting this project done?” Mr Rowswell asked.

● David Limbrick MLC

■ South-Eastern Metropolitan MLC David Limbrick wants to know the State Government’s reasons for appointing monitors to Kingston Council. “My question is for the Minister for Local Government,” Mr Limbrick told the Legislative Council. “Kingston Council was informed by the Victorian Government that it had appointed a municipal monitor,” Mr Limbrick said “From what I have seen reported on the Council website and in the media, it is not entirely clear what has prompted this move. “There have not been any reports of serious governance issues, corrupt conduct or substantial dysfunction. “If we are going to have democratic local representation, then it is important that it is actually democratic, which means that people will disagree. “Democracy demands robust debate, and it is not clear that anything more than this has happened in Kingston. “Residents of Kingston deserve an explanation. Therefore my question to the minister is: will the minister provide an explanation of why a municipal monitor has been appointed at Kingston Council and what the estimated cost of this measure will be?” John Tanner has been appointed as Monitor until December 31. A second Municipal Monitor, yet to be announced, will also be appointed to assist.

Minister should work with Council

● Georgie Crozier MLC

■ Southern Metropolitan MLC Georgie Crozier says Local Government Minisetr Nick Staikos should work with the City of Port Phillip to address local crime. “The increase in the crime and the level of this crime is out of control,” Ms Crozier said. “I am asking the Minister for Local Government that the local government work with the state government to have improved lighting in Church and Dow Sts.” She said: “The state is in a terrible state when the crime wave that we are experiencing is occurring day after day and with the horrific scenes we are seeing today. “I have got a constituent who has been raising this with their local member in Albert Park over the past 24 months. He and fellow residents have repeatedly raised issues with the local member and the government, highlighting the anti-social behaviour that is occurring in their area.”
