16-YEAR-OLD’S RECKLESS DRIVE

■ A man died at Lynbrook Shopping Centre as he fled from Police on Friday afternoon (Feb. 14). Homicide Squad detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death. Police were attempting to arrest a man in relation to outstanding matters when he fled on foot inside a shopping centre on South Gippsland Hwy just after 12.30pm. The man was located a short time later with life threatening injuries, believed to be self-inflicted. Emergency services immediately administered CPR, however he was unable to be revived and was declared deceased at the scene. Homicide Squad detectives will investigate the incident with oversight from Professional Standards Command, as per standard practice when a person dies in police presence.
McCRAE LANDSLIDE HOMES BURGLED
■ Burglars hit eight homes at the McCrae landslide site in the early hours of Friday (Feb. 14). Police confirm that the thieves targeted the properties, which were evacuated after last month’s landslide. Police have been ascertaining what was stolen during the burglaries, said to have occurred at about 3.30am. Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Cr Anthony Marsh said the looting was “disappointing”. Meanwhile, residents of eight properties impacted by the landslide will now be allowed to safely move back into their homes. Emergency Orders were lifted at 2.50pm Friday following the installation of additional ground stability monitoring equipment on Wednesday (Feb. 12). The specialised equipment, including Global Navigation Satellite Systems, tilt sensors and survey prisms, can provide ongoing stability monitoring over the entire area, giving greater certainty regarding safety and risk factors.

● Police Air Wing. File Image ■ Police have charged a 16-year-old boy after a stolen vehicle was tracked by police in the south-east. Officers spotted the allegedly stolen grey Mercedes sedan travelling on the Princes Hwy in Narre Warren about 3.35am. The Air Wing followed the vehicle from overhead as it was seen allegedly travelling at speeds of up to 200-kmh. Police kept eyes on the Mercedes as it allegedly travelled throughout Berwick and then inbound on the Princes Fwy, once again allegedly reaching speeds of up to 200-kmh. It is alleged that the Mercedes narrowly missed colliding with another vehicle on Wheelers Park Drive. Officers successfully deployed a tyre deflation device on Clyde Rd. The vehicle allegedly continued driving on to the Monash Fwy before it was dumped near the Stud Rd exit in Dandenong North. It is alleged that the driver of the Mercedes fled on foot. With the assistance of the Dog Squad, police arrested a teen in a nearby reserve. A 16-year-old boy from the Casey area has since been charged with a string of offences including theft of motor vehicle, reckless conduct endangering life, drive at speed dangerous and learner driver unaccompanied. He will face a children’s court at a later date. Checks revealed the Mercedes was stolen during an aggravated burglary at a Coachella Way property in Berwick. Investigations in relation to the aggravated burglary remain ongoing.
