■ Mornington Peninsula Shire Council has elected Cr Stephen Batty as its new Mayor. Cr Batty was elected following the resignation of former Mayor Anthony Marsh, who was elected as the Member for Nepean in the State Parliament. Cr Paul Pingiaro will continue in his role as Deputy Mayor. Cr Batty said it was an honour to be elected Mayor and serve the Mornington Peninsula community. "It is a privilege to be elected as Mayor to represent our community at such an important time for the Mornington Peninsula," Cr Batty said. "I look forward to working closely with my fellow Councillors, our community and Council officers to continue advocating for the issues that matter most to our residents and delivering positive outcomes across the Peninsula." Chief Executive Officer Mark Stoermer congratulated Cr Batty on his election. We look forward to supporting the Mayor and Council as they continue delivering important services, projects and advocacy outcomes for our community."
ATTEMPTED MURDER AT FRANKSTON
■ Greater Dandenong Crime Investigation Unit detectives have charged a man following two alleged attempted carjackings and one carjacking. Officers were called after a 30-year-old man approached a Hyundai Sante Fe on High St, Cranbourne, about 4pm on Thursday (June 18). Police will allege the man opened the rear passenger door before making demands for the keys. It is understood that when the driver, a 45-year-old man refused, he was assaulted. The man sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The 30-year-old then allegedly fled the scene on foot. A short time later, police will allege the same man approached a Nissan Qashqai on New St, Dandenong. It is understood he entered the front passenger door, again making demands for the keys to the vehicle. The driver, a 32-year-old woman, exited the vehicle before the man fled in the Qashqai. The 30-year-old allegedly made demands for the keys to a man’s Toyota Camry, before fleeing the scene on foot. The man of no fixed address was interviewed and charged with a number of offences, including attempted carjacking and carjacking. He was remanded to appear before Dandenong Magistrates’ Court.
POLICE ALLEGE
■ Detectives from Somerville have charged two men after a man was allegedly assaulted in Frankston. Police were called to reports of an injured man at an address on Charon Court about 11pm on Sunday, June 7. It is understood a physical altercation occurred between three men outside the residence. Two men then fled the scene on foot prior to police arrival. A 37-year-old Frankston man remained in hospital with critical injuries. Two women in the residence at the time were not physically injured. Investigators executed a search warrant at a Frankston address on June 10 in relation to the incident. Detectives located and seized a number of items including hatchets, an imitation firearm, knives and a baseball bat. A 43-year-old man of no fixed address was charged with attempted murder and stalking. A 52-year-old man of no fixed address was charged with attempted murder. The pair were to appear before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court.
