■ Darebin Council was wholly embarrassed last week when street cleaner Shan Turner won his job back after a Fair Work Commission detrmination. The Council had sacked Mr Turner for questioning an Acknowledgement of Country at a staff meeting. “If you are thanking anyonem, you should be thanking the service people that fought for this country,” Mr turner told Waste Co-Orinator James Stanfield. Other workers were quoted to say that Mr Turner had remain composed, and in no way had been rude or disrespectful. The Council was ordered to reinstate Mr Turner who had been an employee for seven years. The Council had accused Mr Turner of rac ial discrimination. The Commission said the dismissal was harsh because it was disproportionate having regard top the context. Darebin Council released a statement on Thursday (June 26) followin gthe Fair Work Commission determindation: ““Darebin respects the court process and authority of the Fair Work Tribunal. “We want to take this opportunity to reiterate our unwavering commitment to providing everyone with a safe working environment at Darebin. “That includes physical safety, cultural safety, and emotional safety. “At Council we have an ongoing commitment to recognise, respect and value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and cultures in the community and our organisation,” the statement said.
Manager dodges straight answer ■ Local resident David Schulze had a straight-foward question for Darebin Council at last week’s meeting: “Why doesn't Darebin Council have the Australian Flag on their website, the Tiwi Islands flag from 400km away is there?” The Council’s General Manager Customer and Corporate, Caroline Buisson, was less than straight-forward as to why the City does not display the Australian national flag at its website. “Hi David and thanks for your question. The two flags on the website are pictured as part of our Acknowledgement of Country. Council flies the Australian, Aboriginal, and Torres Strait Island flags above our Municipal Building.”
