■ City of Whittlesea acting Chief Executive Officer Debbie Wood has side-stepped a request by Mernda resident Gaurav Surati for the Council to consider holding free clean-up days over weekends for residents to dispose of rubbish similar to what Hume Council has done. “Currently Council delivers a range of free and low-cost waste services,” Ms Wood told the latest municipal meeting. “This includes two free at home hard waste collections, unlimited free at home bundled branch collections, four free green waste vouchers, four free timber waste vouchers, two free brick and rubble vouchers and a significantly discounted tip voucher. “A range of free waste pop-up events focusing on e-waste, cardboard and polystyrene are held throughout the year. “We also encourage residents to go to our website and look at the A-Z recycling guide to find easy and affordable solutions for waste and recycling. “Council continually reviews its services, including hard waste, to ensure what we are offering meets community need,” Ms Wood told the meeting.
● The City of Whittlesea’s Cr Michael Labrador has been congratulated by Mayor Cr Martin Taylor about the latest addition to the Labrador family. Cr Labrador has returned from paternity leave.

● Cr Julie O’Brien
■ Cr Julie O’Brien’s motion emphasising Darebin Council’s solidarity with First Nations peoples has been carried unanimously by Councillors. At its latest meeting, Darebin Council agreed to affirm its commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion “where our rich diversity is celebrated, everyone can thrive and belong, and our services, programs, places and spaces are equitable, responsive, inclusive and accessible to all”. The Council agreed to celebrate Ganbu Gulin as an example rich diversity, where on August 31, approximately 500 people celebrated community, culture and belonging, with a Citizenship Ceremony that conferred 161 migrants as new citizens of Darebin and being welcomed to Wurundjeri Country. The Council condemned the attack on Camp Sovereignty “that showed aggression and hostility to First Nations peoples”. The vote affirmed Council’s solidarity with First Nations peoples and a commitment to truthtelling, treaty and justice. The motion “recognises that far-right extremism and misinformation threaten community safety, multicultural harmony, and democratic values. “Misinformation is a rising global issue, dividing communities and ndermining trust in governments and institutions. The council called for strategies that mitigate this rise in extremism, and promote truthtelling, anti-racism, and community safety.
