LIBS WIPED OUT IN DEAKIN, MENZIES
■ Melbourne’s eastern suburbs voters abandoned the Liberal Party in last weekend’s Federal Election. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese led the Australian Labor Party to a convincing victory. Deakin’s Liberal MHR Michael Sukkar lost in his Parliamentary seat at last Saturday’s poll. Deakin takes in Bayswater North, Blackburn, Blackburn South, Croydon, Croydon North, Croydon South, Forest Hill, Heathmont, Kilsyth, Kilsyth South, Mitcham, Nunwadaing, Ringwood, Ringwood East, Ringwood North, Vermont, Vermont South, Warranwood and Wonga Park. The new Deakin MHR will be Matt Gregg. Keith Wolahan, the Liberal MHR for Menzies, also lost his seat. Menzies takes in Blackburn, Blackburn South, Box Hill, Box Hill North, Bulleen, Doncaster, Doncaster East, Donvale, Mitcham, North Warrandyte, Nunawading, Ringwood North, Templestowe, Templestowe Lower, Warrandyte, Warrandyte South and Wonga Park. The new Menzies MHR will be Labor’s Gabriel Ng. In the seat of La Trobe, sitting Liberal MHR Jason Wood had a scare from the ALP candidate, former Cardinia Councillor Jeff Springfield. Wood had 46,291 votes, a negative swing of 5.62 per cent. Springfield attracted 421,365 votes. ■ Casey’s Liberal MHR Aaron Violi has been returned to Federal Parliament with a slightly increased margin. Mr Violi won a swing of 1.49 per cent against Labor’s Naomi Oakley. Casey includes Coldstream, Dixons Creek, Healesville, Launching Place, Lilydale, Millgrove, Mooroolbark, Mount Evelyn, Seville, Steels Creek, Wandin, Warburton, Wesburn, Woori Yallock, Yarra Glen, Yarra Junction and Yering.
