■ Residents of Flowerdale and Yea were warned to leave their properties, with Silver Creek Rd residents being told it was too late to leave, in a grass fire that destroyed 1000 hectares. Mitchell Shire areas including Whiteheads Creek and Avenel were placed on high alert late last week from the fires. Strath Creek was also under threat. A 71-year-old Flowerdale resident was arrested and questioned by Alexandra Police. Bill Sangster apologised to local residents and farmers, saying the fire was an accident. Fire fighters - in vehicles and aircraft - worked hard for days to bring the blaze under control. The fire was declared as “contained” on Saturday (Feb. 25).
