Death of Camberwell stalwart Thelma Baker

■ The still-active community of the VFA’s Camberwell Football Club is mourning the March 24 passing of official and life member Thelma Baker, aged 96, who served the club for half a century. Thelma arrived at the club in the mid-1940s and performed various roles, most notedly kiosk manager (with long-time club partner Phyllis O’Connor) and Social Committee member. In 1980, she earned the honour of unfurling the club’s long-awaited (1979) first premiership flag. She served the club for the remainder of its VFA era and through its years in the VAFA from 1992 until the club folded at the end of 1994. She attended the CFC Team Of The Century celebrations in 2003 and several later club reunions until health issues made it difficult. The CFC Reunions Committee has received tributes from players, officials and supporters of several decades, remembering Thelma as a loyal, hard-working, cheerful and modest club legend. The CFC community held a gathering in memory of Thelma last Sunday (Apr. 14) in the Greenacres Golf Club rooms in Elm Gr, ● Thelma Baker unfurling Camberwell Football Club's 1979 premiership flag Kew East. - David Barker

LOCALS FIGHT PROSTATE CANCER

■ Eight prostate cancer support groups have been awarded grants worth nearly $35,000 to help raise awareness of the disease in their communities. Local recipients include: ■ Bayside-Kingston PCSG ($1500). The grant will help cover the costs of car window stickers to promote prostate cancer awareness. ■ Box Hill PCSG ($3900). The grant will help create a common look and feel for the group's communications, as well as purchasing a group mobile phone to strengthen accessibility. The grants, funded by Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, aim to support early detection and action on prostate cancer, Australia’s most commonly diagnosed cancer. Survivor Greg Kidd said the funding would make a significant difference for local groups. “Each of these groups will receive between $1500 and $5000 in

funding to undertake targeted local campaigns and activities that help raise awareness of prostate cancer and strengthen the support available to men around the country. “Importantly, many of the projects that will be delivered under the grant scheme will be delivered in regional areas, where men face significant barriers to accessing the services and support they need. “Our great hope is that we can make a difference with this vital funding, helping to close the gap in prostate cancer survival for all Australian men. “At the same time, a number of grant recipients will undertake projects to strengthen virtual support networks for men, which have become increasingly important in the post-COVID era. “As both a survivor and Support Group Leader, I commend these groups for stepping up to take action on prostate cancer.”
