POLICE ACT ON STREET DEALING

■ Yarra police have charged 11 alleged drug traffickers and seized approximately $150,000 worth of drugs in the past month. An ongoing operation dedicated to dismantling and disrupting drug-related crime in Richmond has seen officers from the Yarra Tasking Unit conduct both overt and plain clothes patrols of the area to detect and deter offending. It has resulted in almost a dozen arrests in the last month including that of a 76-year-old woman following an extensive investigation into street dealing. Officers late last month discovered a large amount of heroin and methylamphetamine during warrants at properties in Richmond. Estimated street value of the seizure is more than $100,000. The woman was charged with a number of offences including drug trafficking and was remanded to appear before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on September 27. Officers intercepted a vehicle in the vicinity of Victoria St on Wednesday last week (Sep. 13) and a search of the vehicle located a large amount of heroin and an amount of methylamphetamine. Police also seized drug paraphernalia. The driver, a 41-year-old Richmond woman, was arrested and is expected to be charged on summons with trafficking heroin, possessing methylamphetamine, handle stolen goods and traffic offences. While patrolling Victoria St on September 12, officers came across a trio of men allegedly dealing drugs. All three were arrested and an amount of heroin was seized. Two men, aged 50 and 51, were charged with trafficking a drug of dependence and were bailed to appear before the Neighbourhood Justice Court on January 10. A 43-year-old man is expected to be charged on summons with trafficking a drug of dependence. Yarra police will continue to have a proactive, ongoing focus targeting street level dealing.

■ Moorabbin Crime Investigation Unit detectives have arrested and charged two teenagers following a robbery in Black Rock. A 16-year-old boy from Elwood has been charged with attempted robbery, affray, assault related offences, theft and commit indicatable offence whilst on bail. A 15-year-old boy from Mentone has been charged with affray and assault. The charges follow an incident in the vicinity of Bluff and Balcombe Rds, where a 15-year-old boy was approached by three teens, on Friday (Sep. 15) about 7.30pm. The trio allegedly made demands for the boy’s shoes and challenged him to a fight before the victim resisted. The Black Rock boy was then assaulted and allegedly hit to the face. He was able to run from the scene for help and reported the incident to police. As part of their enquiries detectives attended the scene Friday evening and located two of the three offenders nearby. The Elwood boy has been remanded in custody to appear before a children’s court at a later date. The Mentone boy has been bailed to appear before a children’s court at a later date. The investigation remains ongoing in relation to the third teen involved.
