BAYSIDE TAKES STAND ON VOICE REFERENDUM
www: oliveraltermatt.com
■ Whilst many residents believe that Councils should focus on ‘roads, rubbish and rates’, Bayside has chosen to enter the Federal politics arena and promote a ‘Yes’ vote for the ‘Voice’ referendum later this year. “Bayside City Council has accepted the invitation of the Uluru Statement from the Heart and supports a First Nations Voice to Parliament enshrined in the constitution,” a Council representative said in a written statement. “A Voice to Parliament will give Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities a route to help inform policy and legal decisions that impact their lives. “As a local government, Bayside engages with our community to ensure decision making, programs and services are informed by shared aspirations for the future. “The Bayside 2050 Community Vision developed in 2019-20 by a representative group of residents aspires to: ‘Bayside in 2050 leads the way demonstrably as a diverse, healthy and liveable place. “‘We value economic and cultural progress, environmental sustainability and protection of open spaces and coastline, and we nurture inclusiveness, safety, accessibility, community vibrancy, creativity and innovation.” “Bayside’s support for the Voice reflects this aspiration in relation to reconciliation,” the statement said.

674 WANT LAGOON RESERVE PLAN STOPPED ■ A total of 674 people have signed a petition to Port Phillip Council, arguing that the redevelopment of the Lagoon Reserve at Liardet St, Port Melbourne should be stopped. Mayor Cr Heather Consulo was unsuccessful in putting a motion to Council at its latest meeting. Instead, Councillors accepted an officer’s recommendation that Council: ■ Receives and notes the Petition. ■ Thanks the petitioners for their Petition. ■ Notes the increasing pressure public space is under from multiple users, and recognises the importance of public open spaces being shared by all community users. ■ Recognises that Lagoon Reserve is one of only 13 full sized ovals within the municipality and therefore plays an important role in our sports ground network.
