HERITAGE HOUSE BEING DEMOLISHED
■ Severe structural damage to the heritagelisted Norman Lodge Gate House on Nepean Highway, Mount Eliza, means the building is being demolished. “A large eucalyptus tree fell onto the lodge in April this year, causing significant damage,” said a Mornington Peninsula Shire Council representative. “It was initially hoped the much-loved local landmark could be saved and a structural engineer was engaged to assess the property, with a view to determining how the building could be preserved. “The engineer found severe cracking on all four sides of the lodge resulting in a total loss of structural integrity. “This has left Council with no option but to issue an order for the removal of the building to ensure it does not cause a risk to life and safety. “Throughout this process, our Municipal Building Surveyor has worked closely with Heritage Victoria, a heritage architect and the property’s owners. “Discussions are now underway with the property owner on the potential to salvage materials and reconstruct the lodge in an alternative location.” Mayor Cr Simon Brooks said: “This is a sad outcome for the Shire. Norman Lodge Gate House is a local landmark for everyone who

● Norman Lodge Gate House regularly drives along Nepean Highway. It’s one of the oldest buildings on the Peninsula and its striking Gothic Revival architectural style is beautiful. “We had hoped it was possible to save the lodge and worked closely with the property’s owners, as well as heritage experts and Heritage Victoria to find a solution. “I hope it is possible to salvage something from the remains of the lodge. Council cares deeply about protecting and preserving the Peninsula’s unique heritage places.” Norman Lodge Gate House is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register and Heritage Victoria is the relevant authority for any matters relating to the property.
● Gabrielle Williams, State Minister
■ The State Government is inviting Peninsula residents to have their say in shaping plans for better bus connections between Hastings and Mornington. Gabrielle Williams, Minister for Public and Active Transport, last week announced consultation had begun on a new bus route linking Hastings, Tyabb and Moorooduc residents with key Mornington destinations. Changes are also proposed to Routes 784 and 785 which offer a more direct and faster link between Mornington and Frankston. This includes Route 784 starting to serve some areas in Mornington, such as retirement villages and the Racecourse, for the first time. Consultation on Hastings and Mornington bus services will close by Sunday, September 22 – to have a say, visit engage.vic.gov.au/ Hastings-and-Mornington-bus “Through Victoria’s Bus Plan, we’re delivering simple, frequent and affordable public transport across the Mornington Peninsula,” Ms Williams said. Hastings MKA Paul Mercurio said: “The Cross Peninsula Bus Service will enable people in Hastings and surrounds to get across to Mornington directly so they can access all that Mornington has to offer.”
Shortlist for Wellness Centre
● Dandenong Wellness Centre ■ Greater Dandenong Council is inviting shortlisted parties to take part in a closed formal tender process for the Dandenong Wellness Centre project. This follows two rounds of extensive community engagement during the project’s design phase. The request for tender closes on Friday, October 23. “After submissions close, they will be carefully evaluated to ensure the successful appointee is in the best position to deliver this key project for our community,” said a Council representative. “Officers will then provide a recommendation to Council for consideration and adoption following the upcoming elections, based on the outcome of this evaluation process. “The Dandenong Wellbeing Centre is set to revolutionise the health offering for locals and regional visitors by replacing the Dandenong Oasis with a modern, accessible and sustainable wellbeing facility in the south west corner of Mills Reserve,” said Council CEO Jacqui Weatherill. An update is expected to expected to be provided in March 2025.
