Shire blasts Andrews Govt

■ Mornington Peninsula Shire Council has blasted the Andrews Labor State Government over the introduction of 7.5 per cent short stay accommodation tax. “The levy will severely impact our struggling tourism and hospitality sectors, override our current short stay rental local law and do nothing to solve our housing and rental affordability problem,” said a statement issued by the Council. “The 7.5 per cent levy will add an estimated $42 per night for stays on the Mornington Peninsula. That’s $42 a night not contributing to our local economy and this may become a disincentive for people to visit our region, particularly with the current cost of living pressures.

“The new tax will override our S hort Stay RentalAccommodation Local Law. “The lawprovides clear guidelines on the required standards for the operation of this type of accommodationandplaces the responsibility for occupant behaviour on the owner of the property. “Itwas introduced to manage an increase in noise, poor behaviour and rubbish complaints. “The $335 registration fee was set to cover the costs of managing this additional compliance. “Total registrations amountto approximately $870,000 a year, an additional costwewill now need to cover,” the Council statement said.
