● From left: Jacob Ribet, Henry Code, Henry Kiss, Zoe Jones, Dakota Martin and Abbey Reeves ■ More than 20 Frankston High School students are benefitting from a potentially life saving initiative, and preparing for a big summer on the local Peninsula beaches. The ‘United Energy Portsea Life Saving Program’ supports students who may come from challenging socio-economic backgrounds, and provides opportunities and financial backing aimed at teenagers who may not have been able to gain valuable experience otherwise. It includes training and certification in CPR with mannequins, the use of defibrillation machines, first aid treatments and other lifesaving skills The education program has been running for two years and continues to grow, culminating with a heavily-subsidised school camp at the Portsea SLSC clubhouse later in the year. The ● Jessica John camp is expected to host up to 50 students. ■ A striking ink and pastel portrait by artist This sponsorship from United Energy also Jessica John has taken out top honours at allows the surf club to offer discounted memFrankston Arts Centre’s Annual Open Exberships for the Frankston High students who hibition Prize for 2023. patrol on the Portsea beach, and for the purDeputy Mayor Cr Liam Hughes anchase of equipment the school can use for trainnounced Ms John’s piece titled Cycle of Life ing. as the winner before a large crowd at the arts It is managed and conducted by former centre’s Cube 37 venue. school teacher and Portsea member Henry “This major annual arts program delivKiss, who works with fellow member James ered by Frankston City Council provides artCameron, the School’s Lifesaving Coordinaists with the opportunity to address a chosen tor. theme through their choice of medium,” Cr Together the pair ensures that regardless of Hughes said. the students background or position, everyone “Whether it is a painting, sculpture, phowho wants to can take part in the training. tography, video or textile – this year’s artists The program is part of an integrated outdoor have explored the theme ‘Renew’. ed syllabus including the Advance Resuscita“The theme is open to broad artistic intertion Techniques course and hosts students from pretation and can be approached from a peryears 7-12. sonal, social or cultural perspective,” Cr Given the successful uptake at Frankston Hughes said.
