RATNAM AIMS FOR WILLS SEAT
■ Northern Metropolitan MLC Samantha Ratnam is standing for the Federal seat of Wills. “For over a decade, I have represented our community on council, as the mayor of Merribek, and in State Parliament as Leader of the Victorian Greens. I’m honoured to be the Greens candidate for Wills,” Ms Ratnam said. “If you’re worried about the cost of rent, mortgages or food and you think the Labor Government is failing to act, you’re not alone. “Our community in Wills should be represented by someone who shares our values, not a politician who is reliant on corporate donations and won’t act on the things that matter. “If you live in Brunswick, Coburg, Fawkner and surrounds, you have one of the most powerful votes in the nation. “We can win here - we need just one in 10 people to change their vote to turn this seat Green. I hope you’ll join me on the campaign “Our campaign to win Wills is going to be huge. The major parties might have their dirty coal and gas donors, but we have something much stronger – people power. “The Greens strength is our huge movement of volunteers, transforming politics by connecting with our neighbours and understanding the issues they care about. “We’re kicking off our campaign for Wills on Saturday, May 4, with a huge doorknock and barbecue. “I will be continuing in the Parliament as Member for Northern Metropolitan, serving the community until the party chooses my replacement. “After which I am looking forward to helping turn the federal seat of Wills Green for the very first time,” Ms Ratnam said.

2407 signatures for tram petition ■ Samantha Ratnam, State Legislative Council member, last week presented a eptition with 2407 signatures for accessible tram stops on Sydney Rd. The petition draws to the attention that there are 5.5km without accesible tram stops on Sydney Rd between Brunswick Rd and Bakers Road, Coburg North. “Once the Upfield train line is closed to remove the train level crossings and build a Skyrail, there will be no accessible public transport along the Upfield corridor for at least 18 months. “Where does that leave people with a disability, parents with prams, elderly people and anyone with temporary and permanent mobility restrictions? “Under federal legislation, public transport in all states was required to be fully accessible by the end of 2022. “The petitioners request that the Legislative Council call on the Government to act on its legal responsibility to make the tram stops on Sydney Rd accessible before construction on the Upfield train line starts. “The tram stops must be permanent to guarantee transport users’ safety and not to waste taxpayers’ money with temporary stops,” the petition stated. Ms Ratnam saiud: “As this is a petition qualifying for debate under standing order 11.03(10), I give notice that I intend to move ‘That the petition be taken into consideration’ on Wednesday of next sitting week.” The President of the Legislative Council said: “The petition will be listed on the notice paper for debate during petitions qualifying for debate.”
