Mick restores historic boxes

■ Mick Slocum, 75, a former member of the Bushwhackers band, is revamping Australia Post's red heritage post boxes across Victoria. He voluntarily restores Australia Posts iconic heritage post boxes, and was this month at work on the corner of Barkly and Victoria Sts. So far, he has lovingly restored 28 post boxes and has no plans of stopping. There are 123 heritage post boxes across Victoria. “There was one near my place here in inner-Melbourne and I must have driven past it 1000 times. It was covered in graffiti, and I just stopped one day and thought I’ll just clean

it off for a minute,” Mick said. “I came home, bought some cleaning material, cleaned off the graffiti, and stood back and looked at it and thought, I’ll just keep going. “So I went down to the hardware store, bought a can of red, a can of gold, and a can of black and went back and rubbed it all down and sanded it and resprayed it. The rest has been history really.” “We’re lifting the veil on Australia’s heritage. There aren’t many things on the streets these days that are 130 years old, and I think these things are well worthy of preservation.”

EVADED POLICE AT BOOZE BUS

■ Brimbank Highway Patrol officers are appealing for public assistance to identify a driver who evaded police at a booze bus site in Delahey. Police set up a booze bus site on Taylors Rd when a white Audi sedan drove through just after 9.30pm on March 31. Officers spoke to the driver and conducted a preliminary breath test when it was established the registration plates were cloned. The male driver then sped away from the site and was last seen driving west along Taylors Rd. The driver is perceived to be of Islander appearance, aged 20 to 30 years-old with tattoos on his arms. Investigators have released images of a man that may be able to assist with their enquiries. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
