CORRUPTION PROBE AT COUNCIL

■ The Independent Broad-based Anti-Corruption Commission is examining Moonee Valley Council’s relationship with the Essendon Royals local soccer club. As part of its investigation, IBAC officers carried out searches of premises associated with at least three Moonee Valley Councillors, with Deputy Mayor Cr Samantha Byrne handing over her phone at another location. The Councillors are believed to be Cam Nation, Narelle Sharpe and Jacob Bettio, with Cr Byrne meeting with investigators away from her home. Journalist Mark Buttler of the Herald Sun reported that one IBAC search warrant was linked to drug activity. The Age newspaper reports that investigators also visited the home of a soccer club representative. The Local Paper is not suggesting that any of the Councillors or Club members are involved with any illegal activity, merely that IBAC is seeking to discover any activity of some officials. Cr Byrne told The Age: “I’ve been on Council for seven years now and I’m always happpy to tell the truth to whoever asked. I don’t have anything to hide and I don’t believe any other councillor has either.” The Age report said: “To start an investiga-

It may also execute search warrants.”

LOCAL MP NAMED

■ Using Parliamentary Privilege, Liberal MLA James Newbury has named Sunbury MLA Josh Bull, whilst discussing unacceptable behaviour from certain MPs. “We have seen that most recently and most egregiously in relation to allegations against one of the members in this place, and I am sure that many felt completely distressed by the allegations that were made and, sadly, the allegations that followed,” Mr Newbury said. “We read reports of the government holding meetings with its members where members of the government I understand raised concerns about the behaviour of the member for

● Josh Bull, Sunbury MLA Sunbury or the member for Narre Warren South.” Mr Newbury said he was not casting aspersions. “We saw a terrible example in the last Parliament of one member behaving inappropri-

ately in his office, and that issue was made public at the time in relation to his behaviour, the use of his office and his interpersonal relationships in his office. “This type of behaviour is rotten. It is wrong.” Premier Daniel Andrews, reportedly responding on behalf of the Labor Party members, is said to have replied that he was unware of any unacceptable behaviour by Mr Bull (Sunbury) or Mr Maas (Narre Warren South). The Local Paper is not suggesting that Mr Bull or Mr Maas have been involved in inappropriate behaviour, but that they have been named.
