BARRY PUT MOONEE PONDS ON THE MAP
■ TRIBUTES continue to flow for entertainer Barry Humphries who died last weekend at age 89.
His ‘Dame Edna Everage’ character put Moonee Ponds on the world map.’Everage St’ is named in the celebrity’s honour. There is speculation that a further tribute to Humphries, or his gigastar character, may be given by MooneeValley City Council. Maribyrnong MHR Bill Shorten has called for a bronze statue to be displayed prominently in Moonee Ponds. “Dame Edna may have been raised in Camberwell and studied at Melbourne University but it was the famous housewife from Moonee Ponds who went global,’’ he said. Mr Shorten committed to discuss the idea with Federal, State and Local Government officials. 4-YEAR DELAY FOR AIRPORT RAIL LINK?
■ Local government officials in Melbourne’s North-West are questioning Deputy Premier Jacinta Allan’s claim that negotiation difficulties with Melbourne Airport will delay construction of the rail link. Ms Allan confirmed this week that the State Government is unlikely to meet the 2029 dateline to complete the Airport Link project. There is speculation that the State Government has asked the Federal Government has requested a four-year delay to the funding for the $5 billion project. Brimbank Council has made much of the benefits that the Airport Link hub at Sunshine will bring to the northwest.

Council’s Cr Jasmine Nguyen said that Brimbank had welcomed the Victorian Government’s release of the Sunshine Station Precinct Masterplan and announcement that it will invest $143 million to deliver the first stage of the Masterplan, as part of the Melbourne Airport Rail project. “The development of the Sunshine Precinct is a landmark project that has the capacity to reinvent Brimbank as a thriving economic centre — unlocking jobs now and for future generations for people across western Melbourne,” said a Council representative. Ms Allan told media this week that she is unable to predict a completion date.
