■ Darebin Council Cheif Executive fficer Peter Smith has tendered his resignation. Mr Smith tendered his resignation in midJuly, but news wasonly released to the public last week (Mon., Aug. 19). “Since that time Council has been working with Peter to finalise arrangements to ensure a smooth transition given the proximity to the fastapproaching Council elections and Election Period.” said a statement posted at the City of Darebin website. “Peter’s last day in the role will be September 16, 2024,” the statement announced. “Mr Smith, who joined Darebin in October 2022, is leaving to spend more time with family members and pursue other career interests, which includes continuing his work as Chair of PlacemakingX and taking on a new voluntary role as Co-President of ‘The Place Institute’, a new not for profit organisation being established to deliver global place making programs. “Peter thanked the Councillors and the three Mayors (Cr Messina, Cr Williams and Mayor Newton) he has worked with for their ongoing support, leadership and hard work during his tenure as CEO stating: ‘Whilst timing is never ideal, I believe that leaving the CEO role now, provides a great opportunity for the incoming Council to appoint a new CEO who can build on the hard work we have undertaken together over the last two years to create a better organisation for our community, customers and staff. “‘In particular, the new CEO will have the

COUNCILS SEE ROLE IN SOCIAL HOUSING ● Peter Smith Darebin CEO
■ Five Melbourne councils have joined forces, calling for greater collaboration with the State and Commonwealth Governments to address the challenge of social and affordable housing. Hume, Darebin, Kingston, Moonee Valley and Whittlesea City Councils, have written a joint communique to State and Federal Ministers responsible for planning, housing and infrastructure. The Councils have emphasised that genuine progress is only possible if they work together. The State Government set an ambitious target of building 60,000 new homes across 10 activity centres in the next 10 years. “However, their plans to achieve this also need to ensure we create complete communities, not just additional homes,” said a representative for the five Councils. “Home to six of the State Government designated activity centres, the councils are asking the State Government to progress the Activity Centre Program as a genuine partnership, recognising the different perspectives and experiences the councils have in managing growth and change. “Agreeing that the provision of well-located housing, including social and affordable housing is of critical importance, the partnership has made three key asks: ■ Engagement and collaboration with councils on the detail before the Activity Centre plans are made public. ■ Deeper commitment to better infrastructure co-ordination across all government departments/agencies. ■ Support and buy in from the Federal Government. “In recognition of the joint effort needed to make this plan a reality, the councils have also identified that with the anticipated growth, there needs to be more consideration for infrastructure, underpinned by good urban design and sustainability practices. “The Victorian Planning Authority conducted community consultation for the 10 activity centres earlier this year and are yet to release a report.

"Hume has been proud to bring together neighbouring councils under the Activity Centre Program, to demonstrate local government’s commitment to addressing housing supply and ensuring the best outcomes for our communities. "As Australia’s fastest-growing state and with Hume as one of its fastest-growing councils, we recognise that managing population growth requires not only more housing but also careful infrastructure planning,” Cr Kurt said
