● Ros Spence ■ Local footballers, netballers and cricketers are winning off the field, thanks to the completion of the Wallan Secondary College Pavilion. Ros Spence, Minister for Community Sport, joined Mitchell Shire Council Mayor Cr Fiona Stevens and local representatives to officially open the new pavilion, made possible by more than $533,000 from the State Government’s Local Sports Infrastructure Fund. Works at the secondary college installed a modular pavilion featuring two female-friendly change rooms and two female-friendly umpires’ rooms, accessible toilets with an ambulant shower and baby changing station, a kiosk with servery and a storage area. The new pavilion promises to give a major boost to Wallan Secondary College’s sporting programs, and to local clubs like the Wallan Magpies Junior Football and Football Netball
● Cr Fiona Stevens clubs, as well as the Wallan Kookaburras District Cricket Club. Importantly, the new facilities will give the Magpies and Kookaburras a chance to increase participation, particularly in women and girls, potentially adding to their 710 members. The Victorian Budget 2023-24 is providing more funding to deliver new and improved community sports infrastructure and support initiatives that boost participation and inclusion in local sports clubs and organisations. Ms Spence acknowledged Mitchell Shire Council – Victoria’s fastest-growing municipality – for its financial contribution of more than $786,000 and commitment to delivering the project, and Cricket Victoria for its support and financial contribution of $30,000. Ms Spence said: “Wallan is at the heart of Victoria’s population growth and an expanding community sport scene – this new pavilion will help boost participation, particularly among women, girls and people of all ages and abilities.” “Better facilities also mean more opportunities for all local residents to get active, get in the game and enjoy the wellbeing benefits offered by sport and recreation.” Wallan Secondary College Principal Michael Ritchie said: “This new pavilion promises to be a game-changer for our students, local clubs and community and will ensure that community sport and recreation continues to move from strength to strength in Mitchell Shire.”
Floods: Strathbogie Mayor has her say
■ Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor Cr Laura Binks and key representatives joined forces with Mitchell and Murrindindi Shire Councils at the 2022 Flood Inquiry hearing in Seymour. This united front underlined the urgent need for comprehensive flood management strategies and investment in vital infrastructure across the region.
