■ The date for the Warrandyte by-election for the Legislative Assembly vacancy caused by the resignation by Ryan Smith has been set for Saturday, August 26. Parliamentary Speaker Maree Edwards thanked Mr Smith for his 16 years of service to the Lower House seat. The Writ will be required to be returned by September 16, with the new memebr to be sworn in the first sitting week in October. Nicole Werner, a candidate for the Box Hill seat at last November’s State Election, will contest the Warrandyte seat for the Liberals. She has set up a campaign office at North Ringwood. The Liberals have held the seat by a margin of 4.2 per cent. Tomas Lightbody, Manna Ward Councillor and Deputy Mayor at Manningham, is the Greens candidate for the seat. A number of independent candidates look set to nominate. It is not known if Labor will field a nominee for Warrandyte.
