■ The Liberal Party continued to lose its grip on Eastern Suburbs politics at this year’s State Election held on November 26. Jackson Taylor (ALP) retained the redistributed seat of Bayswater, knocking out Nick Wakeling (Lib.) who had held the Ferntree Gully seat. On a two party preferred basis, and whilst votes are bneing re-counted, Mr Jackson had 23,028 votes (54.11 perf cent) against Mr Wakeling on 19,528 (45.89 per cent). In Ashwood, Matt Fregon (ALP) on 25,012 votes (56.39 per cent) bettered Asher Judah (Lib.) on 19,340 votes (43.61 per cent). At Box Hill, incumbent Paul Hamer (ALP) held the seat with 25,087 votes (56.77 per cent) against Nicole Ta-Ei Werner (Lib.) on 19,106 (43.23 per cent). The Bulleen contest saw State Opposition Leader Matthew Guy (Lib.) win 23,632 votes (56.05 per cent) against Ian Rogers (ALP) on 18,533 votes (43.95 per cent). There is already speculation that Mr Guy may step aside from the seat to make way for Upper House Liberal Matt Bach who may have leadership ambition. The Croydon seat was retained by David Hodgett (Lib.) on 23,301 votes (51.31 per cent) against Sorina Grasso (ALP) on 22.114 votes (48.69 per cent).
● Jackson Taylor, Bayswater MLA Bridget Vallence (Lib.) held on to the Evelyn seat with 24,017 (55.24 per cent) against Lorna Dent (ALP) on 19,458 votes (44.76 per cent). Neil Angus, the former MLA for ForestHill, lost his bid for Glen Waverley, winning 20,804 votes (46.75 per cent) to John Mullahy (ALP) who secured 23,701 votes (53.25 per cent). Although Melissa Lowe (Ind.) received indications of victory of the seat of Hawthorn from p;undits on election night, with 21,232 votes (48.56 per cent), it appears that it has been won by John Pesutto (Lib.) with 22,487 votes (51.44 per cent). Kew, once held by Tim Smith (Lib.), went to Jess Wilson (Lib.) with 23,342 votes (53.72 per cent) after polling
night hopes were on a high for Sophie Torney on 20,113 votes (46.28 per cent). Monbulk, previously held by retiring Deputy Premier James Merlino (ALP) went his colleague Daniela De Martino on 24,009 votes (57.56 per cent) against opponent Gareth Ward (Lib.) on 17,699 votes (42.44 per cent). Premier Daniel Andrews was one of 14 candidates for Mulgrave, winning with 22,834 votes (60.16 per cent), against Michael Piastrino on 15,123 votes (39.84 per cent). Independent Ian Cook had won 6810 first preference votes (18.03 per cent). Will Fowles (ALP) was successul in his bid to transfer from Burwood to Ringwood, with 26,460 votes (58.34 per cent), against Cynthia Watson (Lib.) on 18,892 votes (41.66 per cent). Watson is a Councillor at Boronndara. Liberal veteran Kim Wells secured the Rowville seat with 23,272 votes (53.73 per cent) against Mannie Kaur Verma (ALP) on 20,042 votes (46.27 per cent). Ryan Smith took the Warrandyte seat after winning 24,321 votes (54.14 per cent) against Naomi Oakley (ALP) on 20,598 votes (45.86 per cent). For several days, Mr Smith flirted with the idea of putting his hand up for the State Liberal leadership. Upper House seats are still being counted.
