WELLNESS HUB AT ST HELENA

■ A wellness initiative at a northern suburbs school has been recognised in State Parliament by Eltham MLA Vicki Ward. “Congratulations to St Helena Secondary College and their amazing staff and students on the success of their new wellness hub,” Ms Ward said. “The hub was created to give St Helena students a place where they can feel welcomed, valued and relaxed. “Students who have struggled to engage with supports and services have become involved in helping to get the hub up and running, volunteering to put furniture together, contributing to discussions and engaging with staff and other students. “Having a school wellbeing hub like this is important, as is acknowledging the fantastic work our schools are doing to support their students’ wellbeing.

food bank; like their Wellbeing Wednesdays, where community groups share their experiences and run activities; and like Dogs Connect, a biweekly activity where students can have pats and chats with dogs, encouraging students to practice their numeracy and literacy skills. “One particular ASD student, at a pats and chats session, lay on the floor with Frankie, the beautiful black lab, who lay on top of him with her nose on his shoulder for about 20 minutes, visibly relaxing the student. “I want to thank the unwavering principal of St Helena, Karen Terry, and the fantastic teaching and support staff behind the wellbeing hub: Vittora Saliba, Rachel Weiss, Lycas Williams, Costa Gatsios, Kara Chambers, Stephanie Villani and Sarah Ryan,” Ms Ward said.

NORTHCOTE MP’S NOD TO FESTIVAL

■ Kat Theophanous, Northcote MLA, has congratulated the Cyprus community of Melbourne and Victoria on their successful Halloumi Festival. “Over two days crowds gathered to celebrate the national treasure of Cyprus, the humble Halloumi cheese. “Halloumi has been a staple of Cypriot cuisine for centuries. Back in the villages women would often pool together the milk from their goats and sheep to make the cheese, chatting with each other while they worked up this valuable source of protein. “In this way it is not just a product but part of the community building and knowledge sharing that runs the Cypriot culture. Halloumi now has European Union status as a traditional product

of the island, so no other country may export cheese under the same name. “As a young Cypriot girl growing up in Melbourne, I will always associate it with bowls of tpaxava soup that my mum and yiayiawould make with those delicious pieces of chewy, salty, herby cheese melted in. “It is heartwarming and astonishing to think that this simple product of our women’s hands has now been embraced right across the world. “Indeed nowadays there is scarcely a cafe in the inner north that does not have Halloumi somewhere on the menu, a testament to the success of this product and the beautiful intertwining of Cypriot cultural heritage with modern Victoria,” Ms Theophanous told the Legislative Assembly last week.
