Back-to-school season always arrives like a surprise pop quiz. One minute you’re enjoying lazy summer mornings and debating whether anyone in the house will ever wear real pants again, and the next, you’re frantically searching for a missing sneaker and trying to remember what day school actually starts.
As a mother of four who had three different school start dates, September felt less like a return to routine and more like a logistical obstacle course. By the time all the kids were back in class, I felt like I’d completed an endurance event and deserved a medal. For kids, back-to-school is a cocktail of excitement and nerves – new backpacks, old friends, and the eternal question: Will they know where their classroom is? For parents, the first day is only the starting line.
In our house, the “fearsome foursome” quickly buried us in homework, reading logs, and projects. Evenings looked less like family time and more like a tutoring centre, and just as I thought I’d earned a break, a permission slip would surface, only to vanish five minutes later.
Parents, meanwhile, have their own checklist: supplies to buy, forms to sign, schedules to coordinate, and clothes to label. September can feel less like a fresh start and more like gearing up for a major expedition – except the journey is just getting everyone out the door before the bell rings.
The secret to surviving September isn’t perfection – it’s preparation. Moving bedtimes earlier, organizing supplies, and mapping out schedules help everyone ease in. Involving kids gives them partial responsibility for finding their own misplaced water bottle.
It’s also worth remembering that not every hour of every day needs to be scheduled. Between school, sports, clubs, lessons, and activities, it’s easy for calendars to fill up quickly. While extracurriculars can be fantastic, kids also need time to relax, recharge, and just be kids. Sometimes, the most productive thing they can do after a long day at school is absolutely nothing at all.
Above all, don’t put too much pressure on yourself – or your kids. The first week will be messy. Someone will forget something, and there may be tears over an outfit or the tragic realization that summer is, in fact, over (that would be me.) It’s all part of the September experience. Backto-school isn’t about perfection. It’s about finding your family’s rhythm, embracing a fresh start, and celebrating the return of routine – even if that routine involves searching for a library book that’s been missing since June.
If you’re juggling multiple schools and schedules, you’re not alone. We’re all just doing our best, one packed lunch and permission slip at a time.

The start of a new school year presents a fresh opportunity for students. Parents know that the start of a new school year also means a return to the hustle and bustle that many households with school-aged children have grown accustomed to. When that hectic period begins, parents may wonder if their children are overscheduled and, if so, what affect that might be having on their performance in the classroom. A 2024 study published in the journal Economics of Education Review found that modern students could be dealing with a host of adverse consequences due to what’s piled onto their plates during

the school year. According to the study, the amount of homework students are assigned coupled with the abundance of extracurriculars students now participate in is not helping them to build their academic skills but is harming their mental health by increasing feelings of anxiety, anger and depression.
Choosing where to draw the line regarding students’ schedules is not an exact science. But parents can consider a number of strategies as they seek to avoid overscheduling their kids in the coming school year.
Take an age-based approach
While parents may feel structured activities can benefit kids of all ages, some childhood development experts note that organized activities may not be as beneficial to younger children as they are to older kids. Andie Stallman, a clinical and developmental health and psychology specialist and the childhood and play expert at Imagination Playground, notes that childhood development professionals suggest that organized activities prior to age six and seven are not developmentally appropriate. Stallman notes at this age kids should be encouraged to discover their own interests through self-directed play and exploration. Kids can still engage in organized activities at this age, but the focus should be on fun and socialization more than building skills and improving performance. As kids advance through elementary school, parents can talk to them about organized extracurricular activities and which ones, if any, they want to participate in.
Keep a running dialogue about the schedule
Parents understandably don’t want kids to quit, but it’s also important that kids are encouraged to let Mom and Dad know if they feel they have too much on their plate. The American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry recommends parents encourage kids to be open about their schedules, especially if they feel overwhelmed by their obligations, and let them know that it’s alright and healthy to take a break. The AACAP also urges parents to talk to kids about their thoughts and feelings when children repeatedly resist an activity.
Learn to spot the warning signs of an overscheduled child
Children do not want to disappoint their parents, so even those encouraged to share their thoughts about their activities and schedules may hesitate to speak up if they feel overwhelmed. With that in mind,
parents can learn to spot the early warning signs that a child may be overwhelmed, which the AACAP notes include:
· Making excuses or refusing to go to the activity
· Feeling over-tired or not having enough time to sleep
· Exhibiting problems with organization or struggling to meet deadlines
· Declining school grades
· Unexplained physical symptoms, such as headaches or stomach aches
· Increased anxiety

RE-NATURE FOUNDATION’S NEW PROGRAM BRINGS FORESTS AND OUTDOOR LEARNING TO URBAN SCHOOLS ACROSS CANADA
There is no denying that children who spend too much time indoors or on portable, handheld tech devices like phones and tablets have higher mental health and behavioural issues and struggle more with learning and memory retention. These devices are proven to have negative effects on an adolescent’s development.
Many school divisions across the country are restricting or completely banning phones in classrooms while provincial, territorial and federal governments are introducing policies and legislation to protect youth from the digital harms.
While these are necessary steps, if they are to succeed, adolescents need alternative options to replace their addictive devices. Re-Nature Foundation founder, Adam Bienenstock, believes the solution is found in a natural environment.
Re-Nature Foundation has developed an innovative learning program for schools. Their two-year program includes creating outdoor classrooms, planting micro forests on school property, integrating their curriculums into class learning programs and ongoing staff mentorship and support.
The curriculums have been developed for every grade level in the country, and alliance with provincial standards by a team of experts. Functional outdoor learning spaces will be designed using natural and sustainable materials indigenous to the area.

the school’s property that students and staff will enjoy for years to come.
The program is offered to schools in large urban settings where access to trees and nature are limited. One of the main goals of the Re-Nature Foundation’s school program is to fill in the inequity gaps in schools. Over the years, Bienenstock noticed that schools in disadvantaged areas have more pavement and less access to natural environments. This program is designed to close the inequity gap so all students can benefit from natural environments.
Bienenstock got the idea for this program during the COVID-19 pandemic. As indoor gatherings were restricted and, at times, banned, people looked for more outdoor places in their communities they could spend time with their friends and families.
The structures and program development were inspired by the nature-based playgrounds that his company, Bienenstock Natural Playgrounds, ships globally as well as by the research about the health benefits of nature and dirt on the body and its immune system, which was pioneered by his late father, Dr. John Bienenstock.
Re-Nature Foundation plants 50 trees to create a dense, biodiverse forest on school property. Because trees are planted in a highly concentrated manner on small urban plots, they grow faster and become self-sustaining in year one.
The foundation’s team uses past climate and habit information as well as current trends when choosing trees that are indigenous to plant so they will thrive for years to come.
Nature is a proven and natural healer. It lowers stress levels and blood
pressure, increases brain activity, and improves heart rates, the ability to focus and problem-solving skills.
These school forest systems also provide numerous environmental benefits and provide natural shade for schools and the attached grounds.
The shade from the trees helps keeps the pavement and classrooms cooler, making in-class learning more comfortable during the hot temperatures.
Re-Nature Foundation’s school program is available to all school divisions in highly dense urban
centres across Canada. The Foundation covers 75 per cent of the cost while school divisions cover 25 per cent. Over the next year, ReNature Foundation will be working with developing outdoor classrooms and forests for 20 schools in Ontario. Another 1,800 across the country are on their waitlist.

José Avelino Gilles Corbett
Lourenço is a Toronto-based writer and filmmaker with a talent for finding humour and heart in everyday life. His debut feature film, Young Werther, premiered at the

KEEP YOUR KIDS HEALTHY DURING EXTREME HEAT
Summers in Canada bring more than just afternoons of swimming or family barbeques and picnics: they also bring the risk of extreme heat.
Extreme heat can be dangerous for everyone, but especially infants and young children. Here are some important things to know about keeping kids healthy during the heat.
Why are kids at risk? Given the unique physiological characteristics of children’s bodies and their high dependency on caregivers, they’re likely to be at risk during extreme heat events.
What can happen? Heat illnesses are mainly caused by overexposure to heat or overexertion in the heat, and if not prevented, can lead to long-term health problems and even death.
Stay alert for symptoms of heat illness. They include:
• Changes in behaviour (sleepiness or temper tantrums)
• Dizziness or fainting
• Nausea or vomiting
• Headache
• Rapid breathing and heartbeat
• Extreme thirst
HEAT ILLNESSES ARE MAINLY CAUSED BY OVEREXPOSURE TO HEAT OR OVEREXERTION IN THE HEAT, AND IF NOT PREVENTED, CAN LEAD TO LONGTERM HEALTH PROBLEMS...
• Decreased urination with unusually dark yellow urine
If you see any of these signs during extreme heat, immediately move the child to a cool place and give them water.
If you’re caring for a child who has a high body temperature and is unconscious, confused or has stopped sweating, call 911 or your local emergency number immediately.
While waiting for help, cool the child right away by:
• Moving them to a cool place.
• Applying cold water to large areas of the skin or clothing.
• Fanning the child as much as possible.
What can you do to keep your child safe? Keep them cool. If you have an air conditioner, use it. Additionally:
• Prepare meals that don’t need to be cooked in your oven.
• Block the sun by opening awnings and closing curtains or blinds during the day.
• If safe, open your windows at night to let cooler air into your home.
• Limit your time in the sun.
If you are breastfeeding your child, breast milk will provide adequate hydration, but remember to keep yourself hydrated so you can produce a sufficient amount of milk.
If your home is extremely hot: take a break from the heat and spend time with your child in a cool place.
It could be a tree-shaded area, swimming facility, spray pad or an airconditioned spot such as a shopping mall, grocery store or public library.
• Bathe your child in a cool bath until your child feels refreshed. Always supervise your child in the bath.
• If using a fan, keep it at a safe distance from the child and aim the air flow in their direction.
The summer is an important time for kids. Staying healthy and safe doesn’t have to mean denying your children their summer fun, just having that fun with the right precautions. You can learn more at canada.ca/heat.

Residents of the United States and Canada celebrate Labor Day or Labour Day each September on the first Monday of the month to acknowledge the contributions of each nation’s workers. The holiday can be traced to the late nineteenth century, when labour activists campaigned for a federal holiday to recognize hardworking employees and their accomplishments.
Although the holiday originally was crafted by the labour movement,
not much labour occurs on Labour Day each year. Rather, Labour Day is a time when most workers enjoy a well-deserved day off, and various recreational events take place. Individuals can explore these tips to enjoy a memorable, fun and safe Labour Day.
Grilling time
Grilling is a centrepiece of many Labour Day celebrations. Although guests may look forward to familiar fare, such as burgers and hot dogs,
introducing some interesting menu items into the mix can elevate the event even further. Explore options with seafood and vegetables or even experiment with different flavour profiles. Replace chicken with shrimp on kabobs or swap beef for lamb in burgers for even more variety. When grilling, always emphasize safety. Never leave the grill unattended and ensure that the grill is located away from the main action and far enough from the house so that nothing will catch fire.

Factor in traffic
Traffic is a common complaint during the summer, but especially during holiday weekends. AAA booking data showed overall domestic travel over Labour Day weekend 2024 was up 9 per cent compared to the year prior. In many locations, Labour Day is the last hurrah before school begins, so
roadways tend to be congested. The transportation data experts at INRIX recommend car travellers avoid the afternoon and early evening hours of Thursday and Friday, as those times tend to be the busiest. Leaving early on Thursday or Friday or departing on Saturday afternoon will help travellers avoid most traffic and begin their weekends less stressed. Plus, drivers are less likely to drive aggressively when they build in a time buffer.
Head to the water
Water sports, boating, swimming, and other water-based activities are entertaining ideas for Labour Day. Life jackets are essential on boats and other watercraft, and inexperienced swimmers may want to wear them as well. Everyone should avoid alcohol consumption while boating or swimming. Try to stick to areas that have lifeguards on duty.
Firework smarts
Fireworks can cap off a summer of fun. Instead of lighting fireworks at home, head to an event organized by pyrotechnics experts for the safest situation. Pets can become skittish during loud noises associated with fireworks, so keep them indoors in a quiet room where they can remain calm and are less likely to run away and get lost outdoors.
Labour Day tends to be summer’s curtain call. Make the most of it this year, but remember to always play it safe.

The first day of kindergarten is a milestone moment for children that their parents will remember forever.
Data from the U.S. Census Bureau indicates that around five million children attend an organized preschool or daycare facility in the United States, while Statistics Canada reports that roughly 52 per cent of children in non-parental childcare are in a daycare centre, preschool or childcare centre. Children who attend preschool or daycare may make a relatively seamless transition to kindergarten. However, it’s still a good idea for parents to take steps to prepare youngsters for kindergarten in advance of the first day of school.
Attend orientation or related events
Elementary schools typically are housed in much larger buildings than preschools or daycares, and that size can be intimidating for children. Attending kindergarten orientation or related events as a
family can help children see their classrooms, meet their teacher and potentially their classmates.
Meet other kids in the neighbourhood
Some children attend preschools or daycares close to home, while others may go to facilities near a parent’s office. Regardless of where kids go to daycare or preschool, they’re likely to meet
new youngsters in kindergarten. Introducing them to other kids in the neighbourhood who will be going to kindergarten as well can calm children’s nerves. Seeing a familiar face on the bus and/or in class can put youngsters at ease.
Avoid lengthy goodbyes
Parents may get a little tearyeyed on their children’s first day of kindergarten, but drawing
out goodbyes as kids get on the bus or walk into school will ultimately make it harder on children. Limit your goodbye to a hug and kiss and some words of encouragement. Keep the emphasis on the positive and the fun that’s to be had so kids arrive at school in a good frame of mind.
Remind youngsters you’ll be there to pick them up at the end of the day
Let children know that, just like daycare and preschool, mom or dad will be there to pick them up at school or the bus stop at the end of the day. This sense of the familiar can calm kids’ nerves and reassure them that a smiling face will be there at end of the school day.

Be certain to book a scenic excursion aboard an Amped Watersports boat, which takes you to Muskoka’s infamous Millionaires Row, a stretch renowned for its lavish turnof-the century cottages and modern celebrity-built mansions. The craft are fully electric and zero emission, so you can feel good about the decision as the wind ruffles your hair and the
cottages of the rich and famous zip past. Amped Watersports also offer jet skis rentals, as well as e-foil and wake boarding lessons.
Other amenities at PK include playground equipment, an inground pool (great for children who perhaps have never swam in a lake before and are hesitant to take the plunge), and the use of canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards.
If you can pull your kids away from the water, Santa’s Village is a mere stone’s throw away. The theme park is holly-jolly fun at any time of year.

GETTING KIDS BACK INTO FREE PLAY
One of the endearing components of the Netflix series “Stranger Things,” which reached its conclusion at the close of 2025, is how the show harkened viewers back to the unencumbered days of being a kid in the 1980s - that is, until those kids had to fight for their survival against otherworldly foes. Demogorgons and mind flayers aside, the Hawkins kids would hop on their bikes and traverse their town or engage their imaginations during game play in a wood-panelled basement. Baby Boomers, Generation Xers and even Millennials can likely recall youthful days when they had plenty of free time on their hands to pursue various adventures.
Fast forward to 2026, and today’s children lead much more structured
lives. With the rise of “helicopter parenting” and “tiger parenting,” children find themselves continuously engaged with academics, structured sports teams, music lessons, and choreographed play dates, largely initiated by the adults in their lives. “Free play,” defined as child-initiated, unstructured activity, has largely been phased out.
The American Academy of Pediatrics and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggest that free play is not simply a break from learning, but the “primary vehicle through which children develop the brain architecture necessary for adult success.” Free play should be encouraged and not lambasted.
Here’s a look at how free play is imperative for healthy kids.
· Improves executive functioning: Research published in The Journal of Pediatrics says children who have more time for unstructured play have better self-regulation and executive function. These elements can predict academic success better than IQ, say health experts.
· Greater brain development: Researchers at Baylor College of Medicine have found that children who don’t play much develop brains 20 to 30 per cent smaller than is normal for their age.
· Stress reduction: In their clinical report, “The Power of Play,” the AAP suggests that when play and safe, stable, nurturing relationships
are missing in a child’s life, stress hormones can elevate to harmful levels. Play is so essential to kids that the AAP suggests pediatricians recommend more of it at each child well visit.
· Promotes conflict resolution: Children who engage in free play learn on their own how to keep the game going through compromise, rather than relying on a parent or referee.
Free play is an important component of a child’s well-being, and one that is not stressed nearly as much as it should be for good health and future success. Kids can enjoy self-directed play that is naturebased and unplugged from digital distractions.
