HERE’S HOPING THE VORTEX IS OVER!
After what feels like the longest winter in recent memory –complete with polar vortex warnings, endless snow piles, and the daily ritual of coats, scarves, hats, boots, and the occasional moment of wondering why we live somewhere the air actually hurts your face – it’s safe to say many of us are more than ready to thaw out.
There’s something about a Canadian winter that builds character… and a deep appreciation for that very first truly warm spring day. The moment when the sun lingers a little longer, sidewalks finally reappear, and you can cautiously step outside without checking the windchill every five minutes. Soon enough, the coats and boots will be tucked away (at least we hope), replaced by lighter layers, bare ankles, and the simple joy of being outdoors again –without feeling like a walking marshmallow.
Of course, after months of winter hibernation, the excitement of spring can make us all a little… scattered. One minute you’re planning a long walk, the next you’re thinking about planting flowers, cleaning the garage, washing the car, sipping coffee on the patio, calling a friend to meet for lunch, or finally organizing the backyard.
Suddenly, there are far too many things to do and nowhere near enough daylight hours to do them.
Personally, I cannot wait to head back to the lake house. After months where the town feels almost deserted, it slowly comes back to life – people emerging like ants after a long winter slumber. Patio furniture returns to decks, boats start sliding back into the water, and Sea-Doos buzz in and out of the marina. The pier rocks with live music, great bands filling the air while families and friends gather to soak in those long, golden evenings. It’s a full sensory reminder that the season has truly changed.
And when the boots finally come off? I fully intend to celebrate by leaving the house without consulting the weather app, possibly attempting three outdoor activities at once, and savouring the little victories – like actually remembering where I left my sunglasses. Funny how everything that represents summer and warmer weather brings my memory back.
Here’s to sunshine, fresh starts, lake days, long walks, spontaneous adventures, and finally, finally feeling our toes again.

Why STEAM education matters:
FROM “SIT STILL” TO “LET’S BUILD IT!”
STEAM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) at The STEAM Project is more than just a buzzword – it’s a philosophy.
James (Jay) Wengle, the founder of the STEAM Project, knows what it’s like to feel out of place in a traditional classroom. Like many children today, he had a hard time sitting still at a desk and often found himself in trouble. It wasn’t because he didn’t want to learn. Rather than sitting through a lesson about gravity, he was the kind of child who wanted to drop different objects, test predictions, and see the results for himself.
These experiences shaped everything the team does at The STEAM Project. They believe that children think best when they’re building, tinkering, creating, and moving. When children learn this way, something shifts. They begin to trust their ideas. They become more comfortable with challenges. They stop asking, “Is this right?” and start
asking, “What happens if I try this?”
That confidence carries back into school and into everyday life.
In most schools today, learning involves following steps to find the “right” answer and memorizing facts.
The STEAM Project knows that children deserve more than this and that learning should take place through doing. They want children to feel empowered to solve problems (thinking like an inventor) and continue to stay curious about the world around them.
Here’s what STEAM education looks like at camp:
• Encourage children to design, test, and build – not just memorize.
• Cultivate proactive thinkers who generate ideas – not just evaluate them.
• Create space for trial and error –crucial for learning.
• Foster confidence in creative thinking and real-world problemsolving skills.
• Allow children to explore how they think – not just what to think.
It is true that some of their projects involve guided steps, but that’s just the beginning. They want children to customize their work, ask deeper questions, and experiment with their own ideas once the foundation is in place. Instruction should be thought of as a springboard, not the finish line. For example, a child might be challenged to design an air-powered rocket that can travel a great distance. They make decisions about the length of the rocket, the shape of the nose cone, and number and shape of stabilizer fins. Then they test, make adjustments, and test again!
Technology such as computers, tablets and software can play an important role in STEAM education as children develop and how they use it matters. In a world where we are constantly connected with screens everywhere, it is more important now than ever before to give children a break from being “always on”. That’s why, at The STEAM Project, there is very little time spent in front
of a screen, especially for younger children. When screens are used, children are introduced to coding, robotics, and fabrication, learning how digital tools can be used to bring their ideas to life, not just pass the time. The STEAM Project wants children to view technology as a tool for creation instead of consumption.
STEAM education matters because the world doesn’t just need people who can follow directions, it needs thinkers, innovators, and problemsolvers. The world children are growing into will reward adaptability, creativity, and initiative far more than memorization.
Real growth happens when children have space and opportunity to create. Without creative and constructive thinking, we are simply analyzing what already exists instead of imagining what could be. STEAM education gives children the tools to develop a mindset that values questioning, discovery, and invention instead of correctness.

MEET THE
Meet an unlikely fairy and his unexpected new best friend in The Bear Fairy. This laugh-out-loud picture book is about acceptance, authenticity, and standing up to anyone who tries to dull your sparkle.
Fairies, as everyone knows, are supposed to be pretty, sparkly, and dainty – not chubby, not fluffy, and definitely not easily tempted by potato chips. So, when Spencer catches a fairy in the park, he’s stunned to discover that this fairy looks nothing like the ones in storybooks.
The Bear Fairy is no delicate Tinkerbell. He hogs the remote, leaves crumbs everywhere, and snores like a truck. He’s messy, loud,
BEAR FAIRY
BY PAUL COCCIA
and unapologetically himself – and he’s still very much a fairy. As Spencer and the Bear Fairy form an instant bond, their friendship is put to the test when one of Spencer’s friends mocks the Bear Fairy’s appearance and hurts his feelings.
Faced with the choice between staying quiet or standing up for someone he cares about, Spencer finds his voice. In doing so, he learns that friendship means more than fitting in – it means choosing kindness, courage, and loyalty, even when it’s uncomfortable.
With sharp wit and big-hearted humor, author Paul Coccia and illustrator Fred Blunt deliver a modern picture book that joyfully
challenges stereotypes and celebrates being yourself. Bursting with expressive illustrations and perfectly timed laughs, this story reassures young readers that there’s no single way to look, act, or belong – and that everyone deserves to be seen for who they truly are.
Paul Coccia is the author of several acclaimed young adult novels. He is also the co-author, with Eric Walters, of On the Line, winner of the Richard Allen Chase Memorial Award and a Red Maple Award shortlist title. Paul holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of British Columbia and lives in Toronto with his parrot and three dogs.

Dental visits typically are bi-annual events to maintain oral health. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend a dental visit for everyone at least once a year, but some people may need to go to the dentist more frequently.
Dentists do more than offer a polishing and pat on the back each visit. Brushing and flossing can remove a lot of bacterial film and plaque on teeth, but not all of it. Dental visits help remove it more thoroughly. Dental visits also give dentists a chance to spot signs of dental and oral health problems, offers Penn Dental Medicine. Dentists
oral health A CHILDHOOD DENTAL TIMELINE
look for sign’s indicative of oral cancer and other cancers. Dentists also offer guidance about generalized oral care. The importance of visiting the dentist cannot be overstated. And dental checkups are something that both children and adults should participate in regularly. Parents may wonder when they should begin to focus on oral hygiene for their children. This timeline can help guide the process.
Before teeth erupt
Children are not born with teeth, but keeping their mouths clean is still important. From birth to the arrival of
the first tooth, experts recommend gently wiping your baby’s gums, tongue and inner cheeks with a damp washcloth or gauze after feeding to remove bacteria and prevent plaque formation. This helps a baby grow accustomed to the sensation of oral care.
The first tooth arrives
The Better Health Channel says the first tooth usually appears around six months of age. When this occurs, you should brush the tooth with a soft children’s toothbrush and water twice a day. Speak with a pediatrician before using fluoride toothpaste at this time, as there are conflicting recommendations. As more teeth erupt, use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste and help toddlers and preschoolers learn to brush their own teeth.
The American Dental Association
says parents should supervise the brushing process until children are around age seven or eight, when they’ll have the dexterity and skill to handle the task alone.
Visiting the dentist
Stanford Children’s Health advises parents to bring their child to the dentist for a first dental visit by 12 months of age, or within six months of the first tooth erupting. During this visit, the dentist will advise about baby bottle tooth decay, infant feeding practices, teething, pacifier use, and finger-sucking habits. Children typically are advised to see a dentist every six months, just like adults.
It is essential that parents emphasize strong oral health care skills, so kids grow accustomed to visiting the dentist at an early age. This can set children up for a lifetime of oral health.

INOKI BATHHOUSE:
HOW CANADIAN FOUNDER, HELEN YIN, IS REINVENTING SELF-CARE
In the chaos of everyday life, it’s all too easy to forget a ritual as simple – yet transformative – as taking a bath.
But thanks to Helen Yin, a Canadian entrepreneur and wellness advocate, the humble bath has morphed into something extraordinary. Through her brand Inoki Bathhouse, she has turned selfsoaking into a global wellness movement rooted in heritage, ritual, and deep relaxation.
Yin is a Toronto-based entrepreneur and wellness advocate who founded Inoki Bathhouse to reimagine the simple act of bathing as a meaningful ritual for modern life. Drawing on childhood memories of visiting bathhouses in Asia – where families gathered to restore body and mind through healing teas, botanicals, and minerals – she set out to bring that sense of calm and connection into people’s homes.
Her journey into wellness entrepreneurship was also deeply personal. Inspired by watching loved ones sacrifice their wellbeing, and her own experiences with stress and wellness challenges, Yin became passionate about helping others slow down and prioritize self-care.
Inoki Bathhouse creates small-batch tea bath blends and ritual products designed to transform everyday bathrooms into restorative sanctuaries. The brand blends traditional bathing practices with modern mindfulness, using premium teas and plant ingredients to support relaxation, skin health, and emotional reset.
Before launching the company, Yin worked in consulting and innovation, bringing a strategic lens to building a purpose-driven brand. She has been
recognized within Canada’s startup community and has grown Inoki through a digital-first approach, including leveraging social platforms to build a loyal audience and scale the business.
At its core, Yin’s mission is simple yet powerful: to help people carve out moments of stillness in busy lives and reconnect with themselves through intentional rituals – turning the bathroom into a place of restoration, reflection, and everyday luxury.

SWEET SPRING CELEBRATIONS
WORDS BY ANDREW HIND
Nothing says spring in Ontario like the maple harvest. Like the melting of snow, the first crocuses poking their heads above ground, and the singing of early returning robins, it’s a sure sign that the seasons are changing.
“The harvesting of sap from sugar maple trees to produce delicious syrup is a spring tradition in Ontario,” says Tom Stehr, owner of Sugarbush Hill Maple Farm (sugarbushhill.com) in Muskoka. “In the springtime, when the nights are still cold, water is absorbed into the maple tree. During the day, warmer temperatures create pressure that pushes water down to the bottom of the tree, where we place the taps.”
Visit Sugarbush Farms on April 4-5 for their Maple Weekend – watch maple sap boil, visit a heritage sugar shack, trek through the sugarbush, and sample maple treats (tip: the maple ice cream is unforgettably good).
Of course, collecting maple sap for sugar was not the invention of European settlers. Woodland First Nations had been practising it for centuries before the first white man even appeared on the shores of the New World.
Experience the maple season through a First Nations lens at the Wye Marsh Sweetwater Festival (wyemarsh.com/sweetwater) held jointly at Wye Marsh and SainteMarie among the Hurons on March 28-29. Enjoy Indigenous storytelling, roast bannock on a stick, watch historical demonstrations, and learn how the Huron-Wendat traditionally welcomed spring.
Early European settlers learned from First Nations the value of tapping maple trees. Harvesting maple sap became an important yearly rite. Hundreds of producers continue
to embrace maple season today in Ontario. Maple syrup is produced commercially wherever maples are found, from the southern tip of the province to Thunder Bay in the northwest. With a production level of close to a million litres per year, Ontario is the second largest producer of maple syrup in the country next to Quebec. Maple is generally considered to be the first agricultural crop of the year.
‘Sugar bush season’ has been increasingly popular with the public. And why not? It’s a great way to shake off winter and embrace spring, to
get out into nature, and enjoy local, sustainable agriculture.
While a tour of a sugar bush may be a highlight, there are many more experiences to enjoy – maplethemed dining, soothing maple spa treatments, savouring maple themed beer, shopping in quaint shops for maple candles and other novelty items, and more. For all that and more, just point your car north.
Orillia and Lake Country Tourism host an annual Tap into Maple program (orillialakecountry.ca/tapintomaple), running March 6 to April 5 with twenty participating locations.
Muskoka has a similar tour, the Muskoka Maple Trail (discovermuskoka.ca/maple-inmuskoka), running March 8 to April 26. More than a dozen sugarbushes, restaurants, and shops participate.
The Muskoka Maple Trail culminates in the Muskoka Maple Festival in Huntsville on April 25, a street fest that includes child-friendly activities, log-carving demos, live entertainment, and lots and lots of maple goodies to feast on (muskokamaple.com).
