A THANKSGIVING TO REMEMBER There is something especially meaningful about Thanksgiving. It gives us a chance to slow down; gather with the people we love and take a moment to appreciate all that life has given us. This Thanksgiving is particularly special for me. We have a wedding to look forward to – my son will be marrying a wonderful woman who has been part of our lives practically from the very beginning. She may officially become my daughter-in-law, but in my heart, she has felt like part of the family for a very long time. As I think about their upcoming wedding, I find myself looking forward not only to seeing the two of them celebrate their love, but also to seeing so many people we care about in one place. Family and friends will be travelling to be there, some from quite a distance, simply because they want to share this special moment with them. I can already picture the room – people hugging, laughing, catching up, sharing stories and probably shedding a few happy tears along the way. It will be one of those moments when you look around and realize just how fortunate you are. A room filled with people who
have been part of our lives in so many ways, all there to celebrate two people we love. And isn’t that what Thanksgiving is really about? It’s not just the turkey, the stuffing or the pumpkin pie, although I certainly won’t complain about any of those! It’s about sitting around the table with the people who matter, sharing stories, enjoying a few laughs and being grateful for the moments we sometimes get too busy to notice. Life moves quickly. Children grow up, relationships change and new chapters begin. Sometimes we need occasions like Thanksgiving – and weddings – to remind us to stop for a moment and take it all in. This year, I am thankful for the people who have stood beside us, for the friendships that have lasted through the years, for the love that continues to grow and for the exciting moments still ahead. There is so much to look forward to, and I can’t think of a better reason to be grateful. From my family to yours, I hope your Thanksgiving is filled with good food, lots of laughter, warm hugs and the people who make your life a little brighter. Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving treat
PUMPKIN PIE IS THE CLASSIC HOLIDAY DESSERT Turkey might garner the bulk of the Thanksgiving feast fanfare, but a notable and wildly popular dessert also provides something to look forward to during a holiday when food is a focal point. After a couple of helpings of turkey and various side dishes, Thanksgiving celebrants know it’s time for pumpkin pie. It’s a testament to the flavour and popularity of pumpkin pie that overstuffed Thanksgiving celebrants still find a way to squeeze in this beloved dessert. Hosts who want to truly impress can prepare a homemade pie that’s sure to please loved ones. This recipe for “Pumpkin Pie” from Lines+Angles, can be just what guests are looking for as they seek to tie a bow on their Thanksgiving feast. Pumpkin Pie Serves 8 for one 9-inch pie For the crust: • 1 cup butter, cold and cubed • 21/4 cups all-purpose flour, plus extra as needed • 11/2 tablespoons maple sugar • 1 pinch salt • 1 medium egg, lightly beaten • 2 teaspoons white vinegar • 2 to 3 tablespoons iced water For the filling: • 1 small pumpkin, halved, seeded and cored • 2 large eggs • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour • 1/3 cup maple sugar • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger • 1 pinch ground nutmeg • 1 pinch ground cloves • 1/4 cup maple syrup • 1 cup heavy cream 6

1. For the crust: Combine the butter, flour, maple sugar, and salt in a food processor. Pulse until the mixture resembles rough breadcrumbs. 2. Add the egg, vinegar and 1 tablespoon iced water. Pulse until the dough starts to form around the blades; add more water as needed if too dry, or a little more flour if too wet. 3. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface and shape into a disc. Wrap in parchment paper and chill for at least 1 hour. 4. For the filling: Preheat the oven to 400 F. Place the pumpkin halves flesh-side down on a large baking sheet. 5. Roast for 30 to 40 minutes until the flesh is tender to the tip of a knife. Remove from the oven and let cool to one side. 6. Once the pumpkin is cool enough to handle, scoop out the flesh into a bowl and mash well until smooth. 7. Beat the eggs with the flour, maple sugar and ground spices in a large mixing bowl until pale and thick, about 3 minutes. 8. Gradually beat in 11/2 cups of the pumpkin mash followed by the maple syrup and cream until fully incorporated. 9. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface into a large round approximately 1/3-inch thick. 10. Drape into a 9-inch pie dish, pressing well into the base and sides. Cut away any excess pastry before crimping the edges with your fingers.
11. Gently prick the base all over with a fork before slowly pouring the filling into the lined pastry. 12. Bake for 20 minutes before reducing the oven to 350 F. Bake for a further 40 to 50 minutes until the filling is set and starting to come away from the edges of the
pastry; a knife should come out clean from the center. 13. When ready, remove from the oven to a cooling rack. Let cool completely before serving. Tip: If preparing in advance before serving, let the pie cool completely before wrapping in plastic wrap and chilling. – Metro Creative cityparent.com

BOO-TIFUL HALLOWEEN CRAFT IDEAS Halloween is a highlight of fall, as children and even adults anxiously await October 31. Like the holiday season, people often decorate their homes for Halloween and even do so well in advance of late October to maximize the amount of time they get to enjoy the trinkets and other items. Many people enjoy getting handson for Halloween. It’s possible to craft decorations, personalized treats and festive costumes. Consider these ideas for Halloween craft projects. 3D Pumpkins Carving pumpkins is a popular Halloween tradition. But there are many people who feel the job is too messy. Instead, a fun way to add personality to pumpkins comes by way of some hot glue and paint. Use a hot glue gun to create a pattern on
paint with black chalkboard paint. Add your own message with chalk or chalk paint. “Keep Away” or “Enter at Your Own Risk” are great Halloween phrases to consider. Attach the sign in the middle of the wreath. You also can add some embellishments to the wreath, including black moss and floral stems and leaves. A glittery black and green ribbon or bow is the finishing touch before hanging.

Fill the box with treats or small toys. Kids can have fun picking out their treasures. Halloween Gnomes Gnomes have been popular for years, and they keep turning up in different iterations. You can craft your own gnomes for Halloween with a few supplies. Start with a 9-inch-tall foam cone. Cut the bottom off the toe part of a solid-coloured ankle sock just past the heel and pull it up so it covers the lower few inches of the cone. Add some hot glue to secure, draw a beard shape on the back of the faux fur and cut it out. Attach the beard to the lower part of the cone over the sock. Use a crew length patterned sock to create a hat for the gnome and glue to the top part of the cone. Glue on a large wood bead for the nose. Decorate the gnome any way you’d like, such as adding felt patches to the sock hat. Halloween can be even more fun with some creative crafts the entire family can enjoy. – Metro Creative

family fun BOOSEUMS WORDS BY ANDREW HIND Many museums take on an eerie ambience in October as they indulge in the spirit of Halloween. Here are three ‘Booseum’ experiences you shouldn’t miss. Halloween Fest at Pickering Museum Village Pickering Museum Village consists of nineteen heritage buildings, including a general store, blacksmith shop, schoolhouse, and several homes. On Oct. 24 and 25, hordes of little ghouls and goblins will race from building to building, smiles spread wide on painted faces, as they eagerly participate in the fun of Halloween Fest. Kids will enjoy all manner of Halloween-themed games, activities, crafts and treats. As you explore the museum grounds, costumed staff reveal the fascinating history of our cherished Halloween traditions. Admission is $6.18 for children, $7.21 for seniors, and $10.30 for adults. 24 CITY PARENT | October 2026
Paranormal Parents Get a chill on by returning for Beyond the Veil: Spirit Seeking (Oct. 9, 16, 23, 30), where psychic mediums lead participants to supernatural hotspots and tell the stories of those who lived within and haunt the village’s varied buildings. Web: pickeringmuseumvillage.ca Pumpkininferno Discovery Harbour in Penetanguishene embraces the season as tightly as a child holding a trick-or-treat bag. In October, the recreated 19th century military establishment is given over to Pumpkininferno, where more than 5,000 artificial pumpkins and dazzling lights transform the grounds into a glowing autumn wonderland. While exploring the festive grounds, take photos at themed backdrops, visit the artisanal vendors at The Night Market, and enjoy the spectacle of roving buskers putting on shows of fire and magic.
For a slightly spookier Halloween experience, venture into Macabre Manor or the woodland Spooky Path. The event runs Thursdays Sundays, Oct. 1-31, from 6 p.m to 10 p.m. ($15 per person). On Wednesday nights, Pumpkininferno transforms into a drive-thru event ($13 per person). Paranormal Parents: Fearless parents may want to challenge the Escape Room ($24), brave the claustrophobic Coffin Ride ($5), or learn the tricks of 19th century mediums with Secrets of Séance ($24). The Village at Black Creek in Toronto rolls out three days of tricks and treats sure to delight families.
To set the mood, the recreated pioneer village is decked out in seasonal fashion. With the mood set, trick-or-treat at five historic buildings, listen to spine-tingling tales at the Enchanted Library, and learn about witchcraft and sorcery at the Witches’ Lair. Enrol in the School of Monsters to learn about mythical creatures from across the globe and participate in the Slimy Science Show. Children can test their skill at creepy carnival games and create crafts to take home. Halloween at the Village runs Oct. 24, 25, and 31 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. $22.50 for kids, $24.95 seniors, $27.45 adults.
