WHAT DO MOMS REALLY WANT?
Every year as Mother’s Day approaches, the same question comes up: What do moms really want?
Some might assume it’s something elaborate – a spa day, a fancy brunch, maybe a little bling-bling in the jewellery box. While those things are certainly lovely, most moms will tell you the real answer is much simpler… and often a little more chaotic.
Motherhood is filled with moments that are equal parts exhausting and hilarious. It’s the constant soundtrack of “Mom, where is my…?” followed by the mystery of whose water bottle is left on the table or the pile of shoes by the door that somehow belong to no one.
Then, there are the things kids say – those perfectly timed comments that are so honest and unintentionally funny you can’t help but laugh.
My oldest once confidently offered a piece of life advice: “It’s easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.” I’m still not sure whether to admire the boldness or question where exactly that wisdom came from.
Another time, I tried to share a thoughtful moment with my son, H. I started to say, “I had a dream…” only for him to quickly respond, “So did Martin Luther King Jr.” Needless to say, my story suddenly felt a lot less significant.
My daughter has her own practical approach to life. When I asked what I owed her after she ordered leggings
for both of us, she casually replied, “Nothing. I used your credit card.” Problem solved apparently.
There are also the memories from when they were little – the ones that stay with you forever. I still remember the funniest and most heartfelt letter my youngest wrote to Santa. He asked Santa if he really had magic, and if he did, could he please use it to make all his words ‘rite’.
Life also has a way of providing funny moments long after the kids grow up. At one point, my daughter-inlaw was trying to move her car a little further into the garage. The only problem was the car wasn’t moving. After watching her panic-stricken face thinking, “O-M-G, what’s wrong?!” for a moment (note: it was her new car), I casually walked over to the window and said, “You need to turn the car on.” We both had a hardy chuckle. A is a highly intelligent young woman – but clearly all of us can experience brain freeze without ever eating anything cold.
These are the moments I never want to forget, because when it comes down to it, what most moms really want isn’t perfection: it’s appreciation, the hugs, the laughter, memories, the little reminders that the everyday chaos is filled with love, the kind our precious grandson continues to deliver.

Having a baby is an exciting and highly anticipated time for most couples but it’s also a time of significant transition. Becoming a parent changes people. Summer camp is something akin to a rite of passage for millions of youngsters each year. Many adults look back fondly on their experiences at summer camp, often crediting such times as formative periods in their lives.
Summer camp benefits children in myriad ways. Recognition of the many advantages of attending summer camp can serve as a great reminder of just how fun it can be for children to spend their time away from school at a camp of their choosing.
Campers continue to socialize throughout summer Socializing isn’t just for the school year. While children in high school might be independent enough to come and go with their friends during summer break, kids who are still in elementary school or middle school might not be old enough to handle such freedom. That can make it hard to stay in touch with friends, which in turn can contribute to feelings of boredom and loneliness. Camp provides ample opportunities for young children to socialize during a time of year when they might not see their school friends as often as they’re used to.
Campers can expand their horizons
Though some summer camps are exclusive to residents of certain communities, many tend to feature children from numerous towns or municipalities. Such camps provide an opportunity for campers to expand their horizons by engaging with youngsters who come from different backgrounds. Indeed, the Graduate School of Education at Harvard University notes that summer camp may be the first time children spend substantial amounts of time with people whose backgrounds differ from their own.
Camp can get kids off their devices
Modern children are growing up in a digital world, and parents know how hard it can be to get kids to put down their devices and get outdoors. But the key to making that pivot could be access to outdoor play spaces. A 2025 study from researchers at the University of Michigan published in the journal Health and Place found that efforts to reduce kids’ screen time are more successful when children are given a chance to play outside. Many summer camps are structured around outdoor play, making them a potentially invaluable
ally as parents seek to help children cut back on the time they spend using their devices. Children who do not attend camp and live in households where both parents work or in single-parent households where Mom or Dad works may be forced to spend much of summer indoors, which could increase the frequency with which they turn to devices to occupy their time.
Camp adds structure to summer days
Once a school year ends, the structure a school day provides vanishes into thin air. Couple that with extracurricular activities that go on hiatus during summer vacation, and kids accustomed to structure are left with little to do and no need to schedule their time. That can add an aimlessness to summer days. Camp can provide the structure kids are accustomed to but still offer a break from responsibilities like homework or the commitments required of extracurricular activities.

Graduation parties begin to dot social schedules in early May and continue to do so throughout June and even into July. Graduation season is a fun time of year for students and their families as well as a lucrative period for the many different retailers who offer goods and services that make parties more fun and memorable. Though graduation season typically highlights the dedication of students completing high school and college, students just starting out also deserve a little extra attention during this time of year. Kindergarten marks most students’ initial foray into formal schooling. Come the end of kindergarten, it’s not uncommon for families to commemorate the milestone with a celebration. As graduation season draws closer and party planning hits full swing, parents of kindergartners can keep these tips in mind.
Arrange for entertainment
Each child is unique, but certain things seem to appeal to all children. For example, many kids find bouncy houses irresistible, so parents can rent a bouncy house or two for the party and then watch as youngsters and their friends spend hours bouncing around inside. Additional entertainment options include a pool party (just be sure to provide ample safe swimming accessories like floatation devices and encourage parents to bring their own), an appearance by a favourite movie or television character, and a photo booth where kids can goof off and take funny pictures with their fellow grads.
Identify a theme
Themes are often associated with children’s birthday parties, but graduation celebrations present
another opportunity to embrace a fun theme. Since it’s a graduation party, a theme that emphasizes graduation can be fun. Encourage guests to arrive at the party wearing their graduation caps and then give each a “diploma” good for a special treat as they arrive at the party.
Plan to invite the class
To avoid offending anyone or making some children feel left out, it’s best that parents of children of kindergarten age invite the whole class to the party. Hosting the party at home can help reduce the cost, but many children’s party venues can accommodate a classroom’s worth of children at reasonable per person charges as well. And though it can seem daunting to invite the entire class, it’s unlikely everyone will be able to attend, as graduation ceremonies often give way to family vacations.
Party favours
It’s common to send children’s party guests home with party favours, and this tradition can be tweaked to celebrate the significance of graduating kindergarten. Give each graduation party guest an assortment of school-themed party favours housed within miniature backpacks. Include pencils, some crayons and even a small book tailored to first grader readers. Of course, a few treats to help get through long summer days are worthy of inclusion as well.
Kindergarten graduations may not garner the same level of attention as high school and college commencement ceremonies. However, young children’s initial experience with graduation season merits a celebration focused on fun with friends.

The pioneer spirit is quite literally at home on James Bartleman Island Park in Port Carling.
Since 1967, Muskoka Lakes Museum has exhibited and interpreted the area’s rich history. Brilliantly curated galleries full of diverse artifacts bring alive many facets of the past. The museum is large enough to be immersive, but small enough to hold a child’s attention and tire little legs.
Before Muskoka was cottage country, it was resort country, with more than one hundred of various sizes dotting the lakes. The Resort Room is designed to convey the feeling of stepping into the lobby of a typical Muskoka hotel in the early 20th century. There’s an interactive switchboard telephone, and the walls are lined with reprints of old postcards from the region’s many summer hotels, most of them long-gone.
The Indigenous Gallery is dedicated to the region’s first inhabitants, the Anishinaabeg, and the Wahta Mohawk people. A replica wigwam, two authentic birch-bark canoes and a range of artifacts (some dating to 6000 B.C.E) demonstrate the traditional way of life. The gallery
is particularly appropriate because traditional campgrounds were located just across the river. With the influx of tourists, Indigenous women found a steady market for their beautifully handcrafted baskets and moccasins.
The Marine Room honours Port Carling’s boat building heritage with a range of outboard motors, dating to as early as 1916, and several impressive wooden boats that were built for cottagers and resort guests. The most prominent artifact is a “Dippy,” a rare example of a Disappearing Propeller Boat built by W.J. Johnston, whose hallmark was a propeller shaft
that folded into its cast-iron housing should it hit a shoal or log. Today, Dippies are among the most prized possessions in Muskoka.
Other exhibits include old logging tools such as a 1930s chainsaw and a portable blacksmith’s forge that shod horses at winter lumber camps in the winter, implements used in harvesting ice from the lakes, and items used by cottagers in past eras, most of whom were wealthy and demanded the comforts of home even in the wilderness.
The museum’s largest artifact is the pioneer Hall House, where we learn
about the way of life of the region’s settlers. An authentic 1870s log cabin, it was moved from its original site and reassembled in 1982. Note the massive size of the logs.
While exploring the museum, children can attempt a Fur Trade scavenger hunt.
Summer weekends come alive at the museum, with families playing classic cottage games like bocce ball and croquet, and kids trying crafts and hand-on activities.
The Muskoka Lakes Museum kicks off the 2026 season with its annual May Open House on Saturday, May 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with spring-themed crafts, all-ages activities, and a preview of this year’s new temporary exhibit.
