STAYING ORGANIZED 5 TIPS FOR

Being an organized person is a never-ending task –whether it’s staying on top of work or handling multiple responsibilities at home. Life can be hectic, so here are a few tricks to keep you calm during the storm.

1. Keep a journal with you to jot down a to-do list or anything you might need to look back on. You can try using note-taking apps on your phone if you don’t like the hassle of bringing a journal everywhere.

2. Colour code your to-do list, calendar and email based on priority or topic. That way, you’ll keep track of deadlines and tasks in an organized and visually appealing way. The colours might even brighten up your day.

3. Plan your meals ahead of time. No matter how busy you get, this is still essential. Plan and make your meals ahead of time so you won’t have to worry about throwing something unhealthy together at the last minute.

4. Take time for yourself. When life gets busy sometimes you just need to take a step back and breathe. Go for a walk and take in the crisp air. Don’t forget to put on something comfortable.

5. Find a space in your house or office to gather all the items you don’t have time to put away. That way once you’re ready to get organized during a decluttering session, you won’t have to clean all areas, but rather just that limited section.

ST. VITAL

BETWEEN TWO RIVERS

St. Vital is a sprawling suburban area in Winnipeg wading far and wide between two rivers. The Red River marks the west boundary and the Seine River marks the east. Carriere Avenue is the northern boundary and the rural municipality of Ritchot is the southern boundary.

Newer, amenity-oriented neighbourhoods dominate the landscape in clusters in smiling St. Vital. The suburban style of family living close to the country gets richer in the south, but all homes and residents seem fairly prosperous and settled. Old St. Vital has some francophone history, yet it’s largely overshadowed by modern cosmopolitan consumers who want to shop and live in luxury by the river.

As the middle child in a French family of three sisters, St. Vital starts out as gregariously urban with long rows of strip malls braided alongside a huge shopping mall and cosy middle-class lots near the river. Furthest south, the landscape suddenly becomes rural, running past shops into pastures of prairie grass and corn mazes. Professional residents know how to maneouvre around roadblocks from busy Bishop Grandin Boulevard to the farmers’ markets. Starting out traditionally Francophone, St. Vital has grown and significantly changed over the years. Decades ago, she became

overwhelmingly Anglophone, but now there is a lot of variation between neighbourhoods and more ethnic diversity among new residents. More seniors typically reside along the northwest and residents with higher incomes and education are located further south.

St. Vital offers a lot for middleincome families. A smaller budget might find North St. Vital more central and affordable. Big budgets build in the south.

The growing trend toward diversity and demand for new housing has made St. Vital homeownership-competitive. With Baby Boomers retiring, there is also a growing need for multi-family homes and services. Apartments, condos and townhouses situated close to the malls and main bus

routes have much to offer with balconies, granite counters, large suites with lofts and some with a highrise view.

Traffic is constant east to west and on main cross streets, covering large expanses of land by high-speed roads. Buses are frequent, especially at the northern intersections. Pedestrians and cyclists congregate closer to the south by the mall or on residential streets. A trip to the airport could be half an hour.

Major parks and centres include St. Vital Park near the Red River, Maple Grove at the southern tip, plus Jonathan Toews Community Centre and St. Vital Centennial Arena.

St. Vital is loved by residents and visitors. The shopping is stupendous, but a car is a must.

How is your

elevator Etiqu EttE?

You need to take the elevator in your apartment building every day, and there are some huge pet peeves that come along for the ride. Here’s an elevator etiquette refresher.

1. Exit thEn EntEr. Let passengers off before boarding the elevator.

2. whEn to takE thE stairs. One flight up or two flights down – use the stairs when

able. This isn’t a hard and fast rule, but it helps keep the flow on a busy elevator.

3. hold thE door! Your neighbours will remember you watching the doors close on them – and not in a good way. Hold the door for others who are running to catch the elevator.

4. kids. If they’re old enough, let them push the button, but don’t let your children play with the panel or light up all the floors like a Christmas tree. That’s no way to impress the neighbours or make friends.

5. BE nEighBourly. Generally, the people on the elevator are your neighbours. There’s no need for awkward silence – but there’s also no need for awkward questions. Don’t confuse friendliness with nosiness.

Now, enjoy the ride!

THE kitchen

Forget the local Happy Hour – informally fabulous kitchen gatherings are here to elevate a weeknight or add a twist to your weekend itinerary. The kitchen is no stranger to impromptu gatherings. It’s a space where the senses are ignited with flavours and scents that activate memories and inspire adventures. Not to be confused with the formal dining area, the kitchen is where things get real, where people are comfortable, and often where the best conversations happen. Play off the energy of this effortless social space by bringing in pieces that encourage lingering within the kitchen. Comfortable kitchen island seating or a bistro style table can make your kitchen space the “it” destination of the home. Don’t have the space for seating? Bring the kitchen experience to another level by using a stylish bar cart filled with the small bites and sips that pair perfectly with friends and catch-ups.

A social kitchen is a space where hors d’oeuvres are the main event – and they’re celebrated with interesting small plates with dedicated utensils. It’s where eye-catching glassware and unique coasters make a simple beverage feel curated, and little details like playful cocktail napkins or adorned appetizer picks turn a night-in to an intentional experience. The kitchen is where life lives in the home, so give it the details and accessories that make its energy thrive.

SOFA buying tips

The right sofa is more than just a seat – it’s a statement. Here’s how to find the perfect one with tips from Lacey Russell, brand ambassador from Silk & Snow.

MEASURE WITH INTENTION

Before you fall in love with a sofa, know what your space can handle. “Take exact measurements of your living room, then map it out with painter’s tape on the floor,” says Russell. This helps you visualize size, flow and whether extras such as an ottoman or sectional will fit nicely with a rug or coffee table.

BALANCE FUNCTION AND LIFESTYLE

How you’ll use the sofa should guide your choice. “Ask yourself: Is this for lounging, hosting or more formal seating?” suggests Russell. A deep sectional

encourages cosy movie nights, while a structured three-seater works best for conversationfocused layouts. Modular sofas are a great option, as you’re easily able to add to the seating or change the orientation, adapting to your needs.

PRIORITIZE COMFORT AND QUALITY

A sofa is a long-term investment, so durability matters. Look for kiln-dried hardwood frames that resist warping and thick cushions that keep their shape. “Highdensity foam provides structure, while a down blend offers plush comfort,” Russell explains. Many Canadian retailers even let you customize the fill.

CHOOSE FABRICS THAT WORK HARD

From stain-resistant performance fabrics to luxe bouclé or linen, the right upholstery makes all the difference. “If you have kids, pets or clumsy friends, performance fabrics are a must,” she says. Leather is long-lasting but can scratch; softer textiles feel elevated but may need more care.

THINK LOCAL, PLAN AHEAD

Supporting Canadian-made sofas not only backs local craftsmanship, but also avoids costly tariffs and long shipping times.

THE AIRE MODULAR SOFA is designed to adapt. Upholstered in durable, stain-resistant fabric, you can easily move from a relaxing morning to an evening with friends. Its modular form makes it as comfortable in a compact apartment as it is in an open-plan space. silkandsnow.com

PACKING MISTAKES AVOID COMMON

Here are a few tips to help you avoid finding damaged items at your destination:

1. CONSIDER PURCHASING BOXES FROM YOUR MOVER. The most common packing mistake people make is getting free boxes at the grocery or liquor store and then putting too many things in them. Using a large box to pack books and magazines may make it too heavy and the box might break during the move.

Use this rule of thumb: The heavier the item, the smaller the box. Be choosy about your boxes; free boxes from a grocery store used to ship produce could contain insect larvae that may transfer to your belongings.

2. BE REALISTIC ABOUT THE NUMBER OF BOXES YOU NEED. You will most likely underestimate your box requirement. Often, people think 50 or 60 boxes will be enough, and then two days before moving day, they realize they need 250.

3. START PACKING EARLY AND BE COMPLETELY PACKED WHEN THE MOVERS ARRIVE. There’s nothing more frustrating than trying to move a customer’s belongings while they are attempting to shove items into boxes.

This also interferes with the optimal loading of the moving truck. There is a loading system where the first things placed in the truck are light items such as chairs, lampshades, cushions, etc; these items are placed in the ‘attic’ (the area over the cab) of the truck. Next, a ‘box wall’ is stacked to the ceiling to hold the items in the attic in place. Plastic wrapped mattresses are then put against the box wall and everything is secured with tie-off straps to keep belongings from getting jostled during the move. If you’re not completely packed and ready on moving day, movers can’t create that box wall early on. This decreases the capacity of the items that can be moved at one time. It also eats up precious time, and therefore, money!

4. THINK AHEAD. Begin packing items you don’t use daily. As you pack your boxes, move them to the front of your apartment and

stack them along a wall near the front door. Say it takes 2.5 minutes, on average, to move a box from an upper bedroom to the truck. Having it on the main floor can shave 45 seconds off the time for each box. Saving 45 seconds multiplied by 200 boxes can save lots of time and money.

5. HAVE YOUR MOVING COMPANY PACK FOR YOU. Moving companies are skilled, have more experience packing and have the correct sized boxes. So, when it comes to moving, forethought goes a long way.
