TIPS TO REDUCE YOUR EXPENSES
Reducing spending is important for saving money and helping income go further. But it’s not always as simple as making coffee at home instead of going to a coffee shop or using public transit to go to work instead of paying for parking.
Here are some tools for reducing expenses you may not know you had:
LOOK FOR WAYS TO LOWER YOUR BANK ACCOUNT FEES
You can take advantage of electronic alerts to avoid overdraft charges. Your bank must send you electronic alerts when the balance of your chequing or savings account falls below $100, or an amount you’ve set.
As of December 1, 2025, all Canadians can benefit from modernized no cost and low-cost accounts costing no more than $4 per month with certain federally regulated banks. Certain groups even qualify for no-cost accounts, including youth, newcomers and seniors receiving the Guaranteed Income Supplement. Cutting bank fees each month can make
a difference in the long run and help you save on things that matter to you.
USE A BUDGET MANAGEMENT TOOL
Creating a budget can help you keep track and manage spending. Before you set to work on a budget, you should figure out what your needs and wants are – they aren’t the same for everyone. Once that’s done, you’re ready to start your budget.
To create a good budget, you need an effective tool that’s easy to use, such as the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC)’s online budget planner. It includes tips, advice and alerts to help you improve your financial situation.
If your actual spending changes with time, readjust your numbers to make sure you are staying within your budget.

A coffee-lover’s guide to brewing the perfect cup klatch
by MARLENE EISNER
If you’re like me – and 80 percent of Canadians – a freshly brewed cup of hot coffee is the best, and only way to start the day. Most of the time, that first cup is enjoyed in the kitchen, but it could also be savoured on the terrace, the deck or an urban balcony. Regardless, if it’s not one to-go, it’s being prepared in the kitchen.
Recently, I spoke with Lavazza Canada’s Marina Carestia to find out some of the most favourable – and least favourable – methods to brew a perfect coffee. She also shared her expertise on coffee and food pairings that you can enjoy on your own or share with family and friends.
Best method to brew coffee to enjoy its full abundance and flavour
Marina Carestia: While it might surprise some, I wouldn’t immediately suggest espresso – though I do love it! I’d actually recommend the AeroPress, a wonderful way to brew using a small amount of pressure, while still creating a very simple and approachable cup. The result isn’t as light-bodied as you might get with a Chemex, which tends to have a tea-like texture, and it’s not as viscous or intense as espresso either. It’s almost like a beautiful in-between: Smooth, balanced and full of flavour. I think it’s the perfect texture and brew method to really experience a coffee’s full depth, no matter the blend.
Least favourable method to brew coffee that may compromise its flavour
Marina Carestia: This is a tricky one – there’s no single “wrong” way to brew coffee. Every method has its place, depending on the roast, blend and even cultural context. That said, I’d suggest being careful with an ibrik (used to make Turkish-style coffee). While it’s a delicious and time-honoured method enjoyed around the world, it isn’t the most compatible with every coffee blend.
For example, blends with a high percentage of robusta, naturally more bitter than arabica, may become overextracted in an ibrik, especially at higher temperatures. The result can lean overly intense or harsh. So, it’s more about matching the method with the right coffee than dismissing any one technique entirely.
Top tips for preparing and brewing the best tasting cup of coffee, regardless of the method
Espressoyourself
SET UP YOUR OWN PERSONAL KITCHEN COFFEE CORNER
Marina Carestia: Pay attention to coffee-to-water ratios. For espresso, start with a 1:2 ratio – for example, 15gms of ground coffee in, 30gms of liquid espresso out. For drip coffee, a 1:16 ratio works well. These ratios really help you bring out the best in your brew.
Keep your equipment clean. This makes a huge difference in your final cup. Know how often your machine or brewer should be cleaned and use the right cleaning products. Proper maintenance leads to consistency and a cleaner-tasting cup.
Match the coffee blend to the brew method. A 100 percent arabica blend with a light roast is amazing in a drip coffee for those fruity and floral notes. For espresso, you might want something roasted slightly darker to bring out that rich intensity you’d expect in a morning cappuccino. Be mindful of how the roast and the origin interact with different brew methods.
Coffee and food pairings for everyday enjoyment and entertaining
Marina Carestia: This is one of my favourite topics. Coffee pairing is such an exciting and creative space! Here are a few go-to combinations that can elevate a daily coffee break or impress guests:
Fruit-forward pairings: Cherry, raspberry or blueberry tarts pair beautifully with light, fruity coffees. Lemon-based desserts, like a lemon tart, can also bring out surprising brightness in the cup.
Nutty and chocolatey notes: Pistachio desserts, chocolate caprese cake, or a walnut sponge are fantastic with blends that offer nutty undertones.
Floral and herbal pairings: Lavender and honey work especially well with more delicate brews. I’ve also been experimenting with yuzu and coffee – an exciting and zesty combo!

ROOMMATE LIVING
HOW TO DEAL WITH REPLENISHABLES
JACKIE MARCHILDON
Living with roommates has many benefits but it can get a little tricky if you don’t decide how to deal with the usual living costs that go along with rent. I’m talking about replenishables such as toilet paper, food, dish soap, light bulbs, paper towels, etc. The sooner you choose the best way for you and your roomies to buy this stuff, the better. It will help you avoid fighting over who uses the most toilet paper.
TAKE TURNS BUYING: This works if – and only if – everyone agrees to it. If not, it’s chaos. You probably don’t want to buy toilet paper and just assume your roommate will grab it next time, because that roommate might never buy any. Be clear – I’ll buy this pack; you buy the next.
Decide who buys what and for where if you’re going to take turns. Same goes for groceries, cleaning supplies and anything else you might share.
THE SLUSH FUND: If you think it’s necessary, create a fund that you all contribute to that will be there when you need essentials. Placing a jar in the kitchen works as long as everyone agrees not to use the funds for take-out (it can be tempting when you get low on groceries). Decide on an amount that everyone will contribute on a weekly or monthly basis, and confirm what the funds will be
used for to buy. Will they strictly be used for household supplies or will they pay for groceries, too?
KEEP THINGS SEPARATE: If you can’t all agree on the best way to deal with replenishables, it’s best to keep it all separate. If you’re living with someone you strictly consider a roommate, and not necessarily a friend, this is often the best bet. It can get tiresome to split up toilet paper but it can also avoid awkward scenarios and fights about money. There’s nothing wrong with keeping things to yourself, plus it can make your monthly budgeting a lot easier.
EMBRACE
FAMILY LIVING: If you’re close with your roommates, you might not need an actual system. For some roommates, especially those who have lived together for a long time, these things just work themselves out. You’ll grab toilet paper when it’s on sale, and so
will your roommate. You’ll make dinner, they’ll do the dishes, and vice versa. If you like to bake, and your roommates like to eat your baking, they’ll make sure the house is always stocked with flour.
When you live like this, you have more of a family dynamic than a roommate agreement. It can be wonderful to have a relationship like this, but it’s not for everyone. Make sure you’re all on board before you start using your roomies’ shampoo or eating their cereal!

Did you know June through August is the most popular time to move? If you’re planning a house move soon, take note of these top tips from Aaron Parker of Parker’s Moving.
TIP 1: PLAN EARLY
It’s essential to begin planning your move as soon as possible, especially if you have a lot of stuff to move or are relocating long-distance. Take some time to prepare a list of all the things that need to be done before your moving day, and make sure you stick to a schedule. This will help prevent last-minute stress and ensure everything is done on time.
TIP 2: DECLUTTER BEFORE PACKING
Before packing, declutter your home and get rid of anything you no longer need or use. Not only will this make packing and unpacking easier, but it will also save you time and money when it comes to moving. Sell or donate items you no longer need or dispose of them if necessary.
TIP 3: LABEL BOXES AND KEEP AN INVENTORY
To make the process as organized as possible, label all your boxes clearly and create an inventory list. This way, you can quickly locate specific items when unpacking, and you’ll have a clear idea of what has already been packed. Keep this list with you and check off items as they are loaded onto the truck and also when everything is unloaded, to ensure nothing gets left behind.
TIP 4: HIRE PROFESSIONAL MOVERS
It’s okay to save money packing and moving your items yourself, but hiring professional movers can be more efficient and less stressful, especially if you have a lot of heavy furniture. Not only do professional movers have the necessary experience and equipment, but they also offer additional services such as insurance, packing, unpacking and storage.
TIP 5: STAY ORGANIZED AND KEEP CALM
Moving can be a busy and chaotic experience, but remaining organized and calm can make all the difference. Try to stay on top of your schedule and tasks, delegate responsibilities to family members or friends if necessary, and take breaks when needed. Remember, a successful move is all about careful planning and proper execution.

A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE, WORK AND PLAY FORT GARRY
Fort Garry is a large area bordered by Waverly Street to the west, Jubilee Avenue to the north, Red River to the east and Dalhousie Drive to the south. Home to the University of Manitoba, Investors Group Field, and an eclectic mix of shops and restaurants, Fort Garry offers a combination of residential and commercial opportunities in Winnipeg.
Fort Garry is a large and continuously growing area of Winnipeg with a mix of residential and commercial spaces, athletic activities, and entertainment options. One of the city’s oldest communities, Fort Garry is named for the historical fortification of Upper Fort Garry in downtown Winnipeg, but these days, you’re more likely to run into a university student or football fan than a fur trader.
Residential streets, popular shops, and an expansive university campus make Fort Garry as diverse as its residents. Incorporated as the Rural Municipality of Fort Garry in 1912 and amalgamated into the City of Winnipeg in 1972, it has long been a thriving community with plenty to offer. Crescent Drive Golf Course and Winnipeg Soccer Complex appeal to active residents, while friendly pubs provide opportunities to relax and socialize.
The large, ethnically diverse area of Fort Garry is home to people of all ages and backgrounds. With major draws like the University of Manitoba
and Investors Group Field in the neighbourhood, it’s no surprising that this community continues to attract newcomers. According to Statistics Canada’s recent census, Fort Garry is the fastest-growing Winnipeg area.
Shoppers have plenty of options along Pembina Highway, south Winnipeg’s main shopping district. Sports fans can catch a Winnipeg Blue Bombers or University of Manitoba Bisons football game at Investors Group Field or check out the Fort Garry/Fort Rouge Twins on the ice at the Sam Southern Arena. The University of Manitoba is a major presence here, with many students, staff, and faculty members calling the neighbourhood home.
Conveniently situated in the southwestern part of Winnipeg between the University of Manitoba and downtown, Fort Garry is just
10.2 kilometres from the Winnipeg International Airport. A large number of Winnipeg Transit routes service this area, providing convenient access for commuters. Pembina Highway is a major arterial road that connects Fort Garry to the neighbourhoods of North Kildonan, East Kildonan, Fort Rouge, St. Norbert, and downtown Winnipeg. This mostly middle-class residential area offers a range of shops and services for all budgets, from locally-owned boutiques to popular big-box stores. Students living on or near the university campus can enjoy economical dining options at Best Pizza Donair while couples can savour mussels and gourmet pizza at Nicolino’s Restaurant on their next date night
