THE IMPORTANCE OF SELF-CARE
When hearing the words “selfcare,” some people may think it means indulging yourself, such as getting a massage or buying yourself a treat. In some ways it can include these types of things, but it is also much more. Whatever your form of self-care, there is real value in taking care of yourself in simple, regular ways. For you, it might be your daily walk through the neighbourhood, a good chat with a friend or a session with a therapist.
Taking care of your physical and mental health can help you handle difficult experiences, help you feel
more confident in yourself and your abilities and improve your ability to regain some control after you’ve been through a tough time.
Of course, many things can affect mental well-being, and they aren’t all within our control. But, having things to look forward to and putting aside time to prioritize yourself are important parts of everyone’s well-being. As many of us learn the hard way, you can’t do your best for anyone else if you’re not showing up for yourself.
If even the small things seem challenging or you’re finding that emotions like sadness, worry,
loneliness or anger are longlasting or interfering with your daily routines, it may be time to reach out for help. This is another important act of self-care itself. There are many free and credible mental health resources available online, including selfguided therapy, one-on-one counselling with qualified health professionals and moderated peer-to-peer support. You can find more information about these resources at canada.ca/mental-health.

Supporting our local arts community
desıgnINTO INTEGRATING art
by SAMANTHA SANNELLA
Canada’s diverse artistic landscape offers a rich tapestry of creativity, history and cultural expression that can beautifully elevate interior spaces. From the striking landscapes inspired by the Group of Seven to contemporary Indigenous art and innovative modern installations, Canadian art offers endless possibilities to make your home truly unique.
One of the most impactful ways to integrate Canadian art into interior design is by celebrating local talent. Commissioning a piece from a local artist not only supports the arts community, but it also allows for a personal connection to the artwork. Whether it’s a bold painting, a sculpture or textile art, these pieces can serve as a focal point in a room, setting the tone for the entire space.
Incorporating Indigenous art is another powerful approach. Indigenous artists across Canada create works that tell stories of heritage, connection to the land and cultural identity. Pieces such as handwoven baskets, traditional carvings or contemporary Indigenous paintings, add layers of meaning and authenticity to a design.
Beyond standalone artworks, consider integrating art-inspired design elements. Wallpaper, fabric or ceramics featuring patterns derived from iconic Canadian art styles can infuse subtle artistic flair into everyday spaces.
When curating art for interiors, it’s essential to ensure harmony between the artwork and the overall design aesthetic. Neutral spaces often benefit from bold, colourful art, while richly decorated rooms may call for more understated pieces.
Ultimately, integrating Canadian art into interior design
isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about telling stories, fostering connections and celebrating cultural heritage. Thoughtfully chosen pieces can transform any space into a gallery of meaning and beauty, making every corner a conversation starter and every room a reflection of Canada’s artistic soul.

RENTING VERSUS OWNING
FIVE REASONS RENTING IS BETTER
ANNE MARSHALL
Here are five good reasons why renting is preferable to owning.
1. PROPERTY MAINTENANCE.
Shovelling snow, raking autumn leaves, mowing the lawn –outdoor tasks are your landlord, superintendent or management company’s responsibility, unless your lease dictates otherwise.
2. FIXTURE REPAIR. If your shower stops running properly, it’s your landlord’s responsibility to call and pay for a plumber.
3. ACCESS TO AMENITIES.
Pools, gyms, party rooms and libraries are all fairly common features of upscale modern apartment buildings. In addition, high-density housing is often situated in the heart of the city, close to entertainment and shopping.
4. CHEAPER INSURANCE.
Unlike homeowners, renters do not have to insure the property – only the contents. When you get your renters’ insurance, expect to be paying approximately half of what you would if you owned your home.
QUALITY
5. LOWER UTILITY COSTS. Heating (or cooling) a larger space than that which you actually occupy is one of the downsides of home ownership. Rental units have more compact floorplans, and in the winter you may even benefit from ambient heat from the apartments around you.
Anne Marshall has lived in New York City, Glasgow (Scotland), Greensboro (NC), Toronto, and somehow ended up back in the fabulous small city of Guelph, where she grew up.
