AI is making harder to spot 3 scams

Artificial intelligence (AI) is often talked about in terms of how it’s revolutionized different industries – that’s certainly true for fraud. Cybercriminals have enthusiastically adopted AI tools to enhance their attacks. Here are just some of the scams that the technology is empowering:

THE GRANDPARENT SCAM:

Now, with the help of AI tools, a fraudster with access to enough footage of someone via their social media can convincingly impersonate their voice on a call or even in video chat. A fraudster calls their target, often a senior, posing as yourself or one of their other grandchildren, pretending to be in trouble. They need money now and it needs to be kept secret.

IDENTITY THEFT:

With AI to do the heavy lifting for them, fraudsters can much more efficiently look through bulk data for enough information to select a target. One of their favourite tactics is claiming that there’s an issue with the person’s tax return – if they can get access to their tax forms, that gives them all the information they need to completely compromise

Cybercriminals have enthusiastically adopted AI tools to enhance their attacks.

that person’s identity. Never give out this information.

PHISHING:

This tactic has come a long way from emails from overseas princes filled with spelling mistakes. AI tools are making targeted attacks called “spear phishing” much easier. Fraudsters can include many more personal details to make their fake communications more convincing. For instance, they could even emulate the writing style of someone the target knows.

Keeping your identity and those you care about safe in a world of AI-powered fraud takes staying a step ahead of the scammers.

AI may be making fraud harder to spot, but by staying aware of its capabilities, keeping vigilant and staying protected, you can better avoid falling prey. ● – News Canada

Where to find your classic favourites this season

f you’ve been feeling nostalgic lately, you’re not alone. Canadians have a growing appetite for the familiar, whether as a pushback on modern stresses or simply a desire to rediscover what we appreciate.

If you’ve been thinking of rewatching that old favourite show, enjoying a now-classic movie you missed the first time around or sharing something nostalgic with someone who hasn’t experienced it yet, now may be the perfect time. Here are some places to look for those feel-good classics:

CHECK YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY

Most libraries have DVD or Blu-Ray copies of shows or movies available to borrow. It requires a little planning to make sure you can watch everything you want to before you have to return it, but can be a simple way to find an old favourite at no cost.

TAKE A TRIP TO THE THRIFT STORE

For the true nostalgia experience, consider looking for the classics at a thrift store near you. This can be especially rewarding if you specifically want to watch something on an older format, such as VHS. Some kinds of movies, like horror, really do feel different on the original

tape – the grain in the footage can help to conceal older practical effects or bring the most out of classic jump scares.

GET THE CLASSICS AT HOME

You don’t have to go anywhere to find the hits, if you don’t want to. Some streaming platforms, such as Pluto TV, have a variety of options for favourite movies and shows. It’s a no-cost option for finding classic feel-good flicks that bring the family together.

Revisiting – or discovering – great TV or movies is a wonderful feeling. It can bring us back to a time and place we miss, or carry some of the feeling from then into today. The good news is that there are more options available than ever before to experience that for yourself or share it with someone special.

How to safely exercise

hether you work outside or like being active outdoors, extreme heat can put you at risk for heat illnesses, which can lead to long-term health problems and even death. Taking simple precautions can help keep you safe while being physically active outdoors.

KNOW YOUR RISK

In hot weather, everyone has a higher risk of dehydration and heat illness. Heat illnesses include heat stroke, heat exhaustion, heat fainting, heat edema (swelling of hands, feet and ankles), heat rash and heat cramps (muscle cramps). They’re mainly caused by overexposure to extreme heat or overexertion for a person’s age and physical condition.

RECOGNIZE THE WARNING SIGNS

Watch for symptoms of heat illness, which include: dizziness or fainting, nausea or vomiting, headache, extreme thirst and unusually rapid breathing and heartbeat.

If you experience any of these symptoms during extreme heat, immediately move to a cool place and drink water.

Heat stroke is a medical emergency. If you’re caring for someone, such as a running partner, who has a high body

temperature and is either unconscious or confused, call 911 or your local emergency number immediately.

DRINK WATER BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER ACTIVITY

Thirst isn’t a good indicator of dehydration – by the time you feel thirsty, you’re already dehydrated.

• Drink plenty of water before, during and after being physically active.

• Wear loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing made of breathable fabric.

• Increase your comfort by splashing yourself with cold water.

PLAN AND ADJUST YOUR ACTIVITIES

If you can, reschedule strenuous outdoor activity to a cooler part of the day or another day. Move into the shade, drink water and remove gear such as a helmet or equipment to let your body cool off.

Remember: Try not to expect the usual performance from yourself during extreme heat.

summer exercise tips in the summer heat

HELP YOUR BODY RECOVER

After working or being active in extreme heat, allow your body to recover after heat exposure. Spend time in a cooler tree-shaded area or somewhere that’s air-conditioned, such as your home, a shopping mall, gro -

cery store, public building or public library. Whether you’re working or spending time outside, planning ahead and paying attention to how you feel can help keep you safe in extreme heat. You can learn more at canada.ca/heat. ●

Keeping it clean

MAKE A PLAN

School-Life balance may seem to be a mythical concept, but having a balanced daily routine is actually possible –and an important notion to embrace.

I know I don’t have a Saturday to spend hunched over the kitchen sink! Instead, I’ve embraced a few practical tricks that help me get my dishes done, my laundry washed and my workstation dusted without feeling like my weekend completely sucked.

Here are five tips to help you get a school-housecleaning balance:

THE RIGHT CLEANING SUPPLIES

The right products are simply the ones that work best for your life. I like a broom for keeping the kitchen floor clean on a daily basis and I’m much more likely to pull out a disinfecting wipe than a bottle of disinfecting spray to wipe down the counter. Discover what works for you.

CLEAN A LITTLE EVERY DAY

It might feel like you don’t have any time to clean, but the secret may be a five-to- 15-minute power clean every day. Focus on cleaning just one room or doing one cleaning task – either dusting or running the vacuum cleaner. Having less to clean on your mind will contribute to balance.

DON’T LET IT ACCUMULATE

By cleaning a little everyday, you’re not letting your weekend cleaning list accumulate. Why do three loads of laundry on the weekend? Instead, do one every morning. Come Saturday, there won’t be any left to do. The same goes for dirty dishes. Wash them or put them in the dishwasher right after each meal.

MULTI-TASK AWAY

You’re in the bathroom every morning anyway, so put your multi-tasking skills to good use and pass a sponge around the sink or wipe down the mirror. If you’re watching TV, pick up items that are lying around the living room during commercial breaks. Small steps can leave your home ‘clean enough’ in a jiffy.

CHOOSE YOUR BATTLES

Finally, living in a clean space is important and gives me peace of mind, but having the shiniest toilet bowl is far from the most important thing in my life. Choose your battles. A dirty sink can be cleaned tomorrow and a load of laundry can easily be hidden until the end of the day. A clean home doesn’t mean a perfect home. Do what you can and you’ll soon see a tidy school-life balance is possible. ●
