trust in local: ways to buy Canadian

Patriotic pride is riding high with the surge of the “buy Canadian” movement. It’s a timely feeling, but not a new one: for generations, Canadian farmers, producers, manufacturers and retailers have supported their communities with unique, high-quality goods.

Whether you’ve been a die-hard buy Canadian shopper for years, or

you’re looking to get started, here are some tips:

visit the farmer’s

market

It’s a proud Canadian tradition, and there’s no shopping experience quite like it. You can get fresh, high-quality produce, fresh bread and baked goods straight from the farmers and producers them-

selves. Look for home items like beeswax candles and handmade soaps or lotions. Most markets also offer food and refreshment, as well as local craft goods and thrift finds.

look for uniquely Canadian options

Some things are just too Canadian to get from anywhere else:

think maple syrup, wild blueberries or canola. In fact, canola, short for “Canada” and “oil, low acid,” is a Canadian invention dating to the early 1970s, coming from farmers and scientists working together.

It’s a heart-healthy cooking oil that’s trans-fat free, low in saturated fats, with plenty of omega-3 and “good cholesterol” monounsatu-

rated fats. Canola grows right here, with 70 per cent coming from Western Canada. It’s also in more things than you’d expect, from cosmetics to pet foods to sustainable biofuels and environmentally friendly bags and fabrics.

you can buy Canadian online, too

Every community has hidden gems, and you don’t have to live next door to support them. Even small stores usually have online ordering, which lets you access their

unique offerings, no matter the distance. If there’s a particular item you want, try adding “Canada” to the end of your online search, or switching the search to the maps tab to see which Canadian vendors can send it to you.

Buying Canadian isn’t just a slogan. It’s a way to connect with your community, and communities across the country, and to sample the best of what Canada has to offer. what counts as tips to reduce electronic distractions distracted driving?

Picture this: you’re on the road with your seatbelt buckled and phone out of sight because you’re a responsible driver. You’ve safely stopped at a red light when you hear a text message ding on your phone. You check the message and punch out a quick one-word reply. No harm done. Light turns green and off you go.

But did you know that by writing out that one word, you may be breaking the law?

All provinces and territories in Canada have bans on using cellphones or hand-held electronic devices while driving. Penalties can include fines and demerit points.

What can you do legally while driving?

• View the display screens of GPS units

• Use a hands-free wireless communication device if you absolutely have to take a call

Even with these exceptions, it’s wise to reduce distractions from your phone or other devices as much as possible. According to CAA, you’re 23 times more likely to be involved in a collision if you text while driving and four times more likely if you talk on a phone.

Focused driving helps save lives and maintains your good driving record, but it can also help save you money. For instance, safe, non-distracted driving could lead to insurance savings from providers like TD

Insurance. For their customers who haven’t been in an at-fault or partially at-fault accident for at least six years and have accident forgiveness in their policy, they could be “forgiven” for the first at-fault or partially at-fault accident. This means their premiums won’t increase at renewal as a result of the accident.

“Canadians work hard, and we want to help them secure the best protection while keeping money in their pockets by making them aware of how they can save on their insurance,” said Bruno Jauernig, vice president, TD Insurance.

“From claims-free rewards for safe drivers, to preferred rates for alumni and professionals, policy discounts and savings start to really

add up, which could make a huge difference for Canadians, especially in today’s economy.”

Here are some ways you can reduce electronic distractions:

• Know your route: Map out a route before driving, or use the voice navigation feature on your GPS or map app.

• Set a playlist: Decide before you drive what music to listen to. If you are travelling with others, designate a DJ in charge of setting the vibe.

• Turn off notifications: Put your phone on vibrate to limit incoming distractions. Remember, there’s nothing so important it can’t wait until after the car ride is over. ■

flavourful chicken with a Mediterranean twist

Leave an impression at dinnertime with a fresh take on a classic chicken roulade. This recipe comes together in about an hour, and features flavourful seared chicken breasts, a simple sauce and a sweet-and-savoury filling – with a secret ingredient: your secret ingredient: prunes

The inclusion of prunes elevates the stuffing with a sweetness from their natural sugars. Prunes also contain a number of important nutrients: antioxidants, Vitamin K, potassium and fibre, just to name a few. Research suggests that including prunes in your diet can help support your bone density and gut health. You can find more recipes at californiaprunes.ca.

Mediterranean Chicken Roulades with Prune Stuffing

Prep time: 40 mins Cook time: 20 min Serves: 4

Ingredients:

Filling:

• 1 cup (250 ml) California Prunes, chopped

• 1/2 cup (125 g) brick-style cream cheese, softened

• 1/3 cup (75 ml) squeeze-dried thawed, frozen chopped spinach

• 1/3 cup (75 ml) diced roasted red pepper

• 2 tbsp (30 ml) each chopped sliced Kalamata olives and pickled hot pepper mix

Directions:

Prep:

Chicken:

• 4 medium-sized boneless skinless chicken breasts

• 2 tsp (10 ml) Cajun spice or seasoning salt

• 1 tbsp (15 ml) olive oil

• 1 cup (250 ml) white wine

• 2 tbsp (30 ml) butter

• 1 tbsp (15 ml) fresh sage leaves, chopped

• Sage leaves to garnish

1. First, make the filling: in a medium bowl, add prunes, cream cheese, spinach, red pepper, olives and roasted pepper mix. Stir until well combined and set aside.

2. Butterfly chicken breasts and pound with a mallet to create an even thickness.

3. Divide filling among breasts. Create a log of filling along the centre of each breast and roll one side of the breast upward to wrap around filling. Secure the roll by tying it with kitchen twine or sticking a skewer through. Repeat with remaining breasts.

4. Season each roll with Cajun spice. For reduced spice, use seasoning salt instead.

Cooking – chicken and sauce:

1. Heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add each chicken roll seam-side-down and cook with a lid on, turning periodically for 15 to 17 minutes, until golden-brown all over. Reduce heat to medium-low if chicken darkens too quickly.

2. Remove chicken to a cutting board.

3. In the same pan, raise heat to high and deglaze with white wine.

4. Reduce liquid by half. Stir in butter and remove from heat.

Serving:

1. Remove twine or skewers from the chicken and slice into 3/4-inch rounds. Plate with a side of mashed potatoes and green beans. Drizzle the sauce on everything, garnish with sage leaves and serve.
