Keep your family safe:

Ontario recommends more CO detectors

During the cold winter season, many people are proactively looking for ways to reduce energy consumption and lower costs. It’s important to remember that some energy-reducing methods can also affect indoor air quality and safety, including the risk of carbon monoxide (CO) exposure.

More than 65 per cent of COrelated deaths in Ontario happen at home, according to the Government of Ontario. With recent updates to the Fire Code now in effect, homeowners and renters may want to understand how these changes affect everyday safety. Ryan Reid, operations manager with Enbridge Gas, shares what to know about the update and how it will help keep you and your family safe:

What’s changing?

To keep your family safe, ensure you have a working detector on every level of your home. This year,

under the updated code, carbon monoxide alarms will now be required on every level of your home, including those without bedrooms, and next to all sleeping areas. Alarms are mandatory if the home has a fuel-burning appliance, fireplace, attached garage or is heated by air from a fuel-burning appliance outside the residence.

Who do these changes affect?

Every household in Ontario will need to comply with the new rules without exception. Following these rules will help keep your family safe from potential exposure.

Why is this important?

Carbon monoxide is often called the “silent killer” because it’s invisible, odourless and dangerous. The unfortunate reality is that most CO deaths and injuries are preventable. These updated regulations are designed to save lives by ensuring

alarms are installed where they’re needed most.

When does this take effect?

The new requirements take effect on January 1, 2026. Homes that aren’t yet compliant will need to make updates to meet the new standards.

How can homeowners prepare?

Homeowners can take a few simple steps to meet the updated requirements, including installing carbon monoxide alarms on every level of the home and testing alarms regularly. Batteries should also be replaced as needed to ensure alarms are working properly.

You can find more information on carbon monoxide safety and tips to protect your home at enbridgegas.com/Ontario. ■

Wtax filing this year

ith tax time fast approaching, Canadians are getting organized and ready to file. But before you open your tax software, here are some changes you should know about for this year:

Tax filing is becoming more digital

Starting this year, the usual paper income tax package won’t be sent proactively by mail for those who choose to file on paper. Over 93 per cent of Canadians already file

their taxes online, and their tax returns are generally processed much quicker than paper ones. If you still choose to file by paper, you can get the tax package and schedules by ordering online or over the phone, or by downloading and printing it on your own.

Online tax tools and portals are getting easier to use

There are a few improvements to the Canada Revenue Agency’s (CRA) digital services this year, including:

• A new way for users who’ve forgotten their sign-in information or lost access to their account to get back in without having to call.

• The addition of a mandatory backup multi-factor authentication (MFA) option on file to prevent potential lockouts during the MFA process.

• Optimized web pages in key areas, including clear answers about Tax-Free Savings Accounts, the Canada child benefit, registering a business and registering for an account.

By keeping on top of tax changes and available digital services, Canadians can have an easier time filing and getting the information they need.

Grant representatives permission to access your account

Someone using EFile to file your taxes on your behalf now must request access to your account through the represent a client online portal. This lets you decide and control who has access to your tax information. If you have a representative doing your tax filing, you can authorize them instantly through your online account portal once they submit a request.

By keeping on top of tax changes and available digital services, Canadians can have an easier time filing and getting the information they need. You can find a full list of the changes at canada.ca/taxes-whats-new. ■ – News Canada

This cold and flu season, focus on self-care

It’s the same story every year. It’s cold, the days are short and it feels like everyone around you is coughing or sneezing. Seasonal illnesses like colds and the flu hit their peak when people’s immune systems might be weaker, coupled with higher indoor crowding and increased viral activity in a colder climate. But you don’t have to wait for an inevitable sickness –you can take steps to protect yourself and your loved ones more easily than you might think.

Self-care is health care

Whether it’s making healthy choices, taking a daily multivitamin or keeping essential over-the-counter medicines like cough and cold

remedies stocked, self-care is an opportunity to proactively manage your health. When you take steps that help you get sick less often –and recover faster when you do – you’re not just helping yourself. In fact, research cited in a report from Food, Health and Consumer Products of Canada suggests that 500,000 more Canadians could have access to a family doctor if just two per cent of patients who describe their cold symptoms as mild or minor implemented self-care.

Some key self-care practices

Here are some suggestions from the self-care experts at consumer health company Haleon:

Reducing stress and making time to rest and do things that bring you joy can make a real difference to your hormone levels, which impacts your immune system.

• Wash hands often with soap and water or use alcohol-based sanitizer when soap is not available.

• Staying hydrated helps your overall health by preventing dehydration. Getting good-quality sleep is essential for overall health and well-being.

• For minor coughs, sore throats or congestion, having over-thecounter medicines on hand can help you feel better by managing your symptoms.

• Taking vitamin supplements in addition to a balanced diet can help support and maintain your immunity. Consider using a multivitamin to help you meet your nutritional requirements. Reducing stress and making time to rest and do things that bring you joy can make a real difference to your hormone levels, which impacts your immune system. Getting well and staying well during cold and flu season doesn’t have to be a challenge. By making sure you have the supplements and medicines you need and following simple self-care habits, you can take greater charge of your own health.
