MOVERS

10

Achieve moving zen BY CHUCK RESNICK

Moving your worldly possessions involves a lot of organization, and if there’s one thing professional movers understand, it’s to expect the unexpected. In fact, that’s a major reason why many people choose to hand over the task of moving to companies that do this every day.

S

ome do-it-yourself moves go well; others end up unnecessarily stressful because those completing the work don’t anticipate potential glitches. Checklists are great, but every single move is different – and nothing beats experience for transferring household and other goods quickly, safely and efficiently. For example, if you move in the winter and it’s a snowy, slushy day, how do you protect the floors from water or salt damage at both ends? What about getting large items around hard-tomanoeuvre corners without marking walls? What if someone gets hurt? Do you know how to pack delicate items such as lampshades and glassware to eliminate shifting and potential breakage during a long haul? What if the truck breaks down or gets into an accident halfway to your new home? Professional movers have resources to draw upon to anticipate and/or handle any number of unexpected happenings. Training is a great preventative measure – when you shop for a mover, find out if and how the drivers and moving people are trained. Ask whether they have a “Plan B” in case of vehicle problems, and what you can do to be as prepared as possible when the packing/ moving begins.

As tempting as a D-I-Y move may be, think through the consequences. Are you prepared to deal with the possibility of friends or family members not showing up on moving day due to illness or hurt themselves trying to move heavy items? Do you have a backup plan for extra items in case you misjudge the size of moving vehicle you need? What about plants? Hazardous liquids? Items such as chain saws and lawnmowers with gas or grease on them? Large items like ladders? Of course, there are specialty items that require an unusual level of care – pianos, pool tables, grandfather clocks, artwork, antiques and the like. The money you think you’ll save by not hiring a professional mover may end up being spent on repairs if these large and valuable pieces are not handled correctly. Worse yet, irreplaceable items may be lost forever. And have you thought through unpacking at the other end? On your first night there, you will need bedding, toiletries, towels and some kitchen items. Do you have a plan that includes being able to find those things easily and quickly? All of these considerations and more are covered in the training that Two Men and A Truck franchisees take part in at what we call Stick Men

University in honour of the company logo. Among the many things they learn is how to maneuver, wrap, pack and load items from big-screen televisions to china cabinets filled with breakables. If you do decide to move yourself, on the Two Men and A Truck website, we provide moving tips, a moving checklist and even special things to consider for extremely large items. Give some thought to what might happen along the way and make contingency plans. And be realistic – hiring a professional mover can offer tremendous peace-of-mind and is money well spent. Visit twomen.ca to find a location near your rental home. ■

How renovating your home can

help you protect it T

he right home improvements can do more than refresh your space. They may protect your home from damage, support long-term resale value and even help lower your home insurance premium in some cases. “Home improvements often come with upfront costs, so it’s important for Canadians to understand the long-term value they can provide,” said Kristen Gill, a vice president at

4Rent.ca

September 11–October 9, 2026

TD Insurance. “One important factor some homeowners don’t consider is the impact on their insurance. Being more informed about your options can help you feel more financially resilient and ready to protect what matters most.”

Major renovations can impact your coverage

After any significant renovation or system replacement, it’s important to review your insurance policy.

Some factors that affect your premiums may be outside your control, such as location, nearby fire services or exposure to severe weather. But understanding them can help you make smarter decisions about your home’s maintenance, upgrades and coverage. Finishing a basement, replacing a roof, updating plumbing or adding new features can all affect replacement costs, risk exposure and the coverage that applies. Some provid-

15

ers, such as TD Insurance, make it easy to speak with licensed advisors. They can help you understand how renovations or system upgrades may affect your coverage and whether you have opportunities to save.

Some improvements can protect your home or lower your costs

Here are some areas to consider upgrading first for the most longterm benefit to your home:

• Prevent water damage. Water damage is one of the most common and costly types of home insurance claims in Canada, but practical upgrades can help reduce the risk. Water leak detection systems, automatic shut-off devices, backwater valves and sump pumps with backup power can all help identify or limit problems before they spread. • Build resilience into your home. Replacing an aging roof, upgrading exterior materials, improving drainage around the property and updating older plumbing, electrical or heating systems can help reduce the likelihood of damage from severe weather, fire or water-related issues. • Reduce your energy costs. Energy-efficient windows, properly installed insulation and solar panels

THE VIEW

may help reduce energy use and improve the overall condition of the home. You can consider switching from oil heating to electric to take full advantage of your home’s increased efficiency. Replacing older hot water tanks or fuel tanks before they become a problem can also help avoid costly leaks and support your continued insurance coverage. By focusing your early improvement efforts on elements that can lower your costs and reduce your risk, you can better protect your home. The last piece of the puzzle is making sure you know how those improvements affect your home’s insurance protection. That can help you enjoy true peace of mind. ■ — News Canada September 11–October 9, 2026

sustainable Canadian materials for your next home project

M

any of us are becoming more conscious of our choices’ environmental impact. One place you can seek out sustainable options is at home – even when you’re making changes to it.

Buy Canadian

Canada’s forest products are produced sustainably, with scientific research driving harvesting and forest regeneration. They aren’t just in demand here. Sustainably harvested lumber and mass timber – made of smaller wood pieces glued and pressed together for strength – are finding new markets in Europe and Asia. They’re providing low-carbon, high-durability material for projects there, with the demand for highergrade lumber continuing to rise. Materials produced here also don’t have to travel as far or use as much fuel to reach you. Here are some sustainable materials

4Rent.ca

September 11–October 9, 2026

from Canadian forest products you can consider for your next home project: • Lumber. Canada has a number of different tree species that provide high-quality lumber. Softwood, like pine and cedar, works well for projects like drywalling or framing. Hardwood, like oak and maple, is well-suited for elements that will get a lot of wear, such as flooring or cabinets. • Wood fibre insulation. Made from steam-treated woodchips, wood fibre insulation is sustainable, efficient and, thanks to borate treatment, fire-resistant. Any water that gets into the insulation naturally spreads out to dry evenly, making it a good choice for moisture control. • Builder’s paper. When you’re doing any home project, it’s important to think about how you’re going to protect your existing elements. Builder’s paper, made from recy-

cled material, can be a cost-effective and eco-friendly way to protect floors and walls from dust, paint and scratches. Forest sustainability is making a world of difference. A more diverse group of trade partners means more customers for Canadian forest products. That helps support the industry and communities across the country with good jobs. The revenue from international trade also helps fund essential services and programs, including pensions, schools, roads and healthcare. Whether it’s in a highrise across the world or the deck in your backyard, wood from Canada’s forests is a sustainable choice that helps support projects, workers and communities. You can learn more about this country’s forest products and how market diversification is bringing them to the world at canada.ca/whattheworldwants. ■ — News Canada

barbecue tips every home griller should know

September 11–October 9, 2026

B

arbecue season is one of Canadians’ favourite ways to gather throughout the summer and into the fall. Whether it’s a weeknight dinner on the deck, a cottage cookout or a backyard gathering with friends, a sizzling grill brings people together. Here are a few simple grilling techniques from the experts at Schneiders that can help elevate your meals and make entertaining easier all season long.

Don’t forget to preheat

One of the most common mistakes is starting too soon. Before you kick off, let your grill fully preheat to make sure the temperature stays consistent. This can help you get a better sear and cook your food more evenly.

Use two heat zones

You can do two kinds of cooking at once by splitting up your grill space: Direct heat zones right above the flame for searing, and indirect heat zones up away from the flame for slower cooking. This gives you more control and can help prevent flareups, especially when cooking different meats at once.

Resist the urge to constantly flip

Repeatedly moving food on the grill can interfere with the browning process. Let meat cook undisturbed, allowing the grill to work its magic and create a delicious sear. You can

check the bottom of the meat to make sure it’s not burning, but try to only flip once.

Trust a meat thermometer

Guesswork can lead to over- or undercooked food. Using a digital thermometer is one of the easiest ways to ensure food comes off the grill safe and tasty. For safe grilling, cook poultry to 74 C (165 F), ground meats such as burgers to 71 C (160 F) and whole cuts of pork, ham and beef to at least 63 C (145 F). Avoid relying on colour alone to determine doneness.

Let meat rest before serving it

After grilling, let the meat rest for a few minutes before serving. This gives the heat and liquid inside the meat time to evenly distribute, which can help improve the flavour and texture. Avoid covering the meat while it’s resting – you don’t want to accidentally steam it. Important food safety tip: always keep raw and cooked foods separate and use clean utensils and plates when serving. From hot dogs and sausages to chicken and burgers, these techniques can help you get the most out of your favourite barbecue staples.
