200 Years celebrations + Encounter Recap

Celebrating

the history of Catholic education

This year we celebrate the 200 year anniversary of Catholic Education in Australia, marking the bicentenary of the first ‘official’ Catholic school opening in Parramatta, NSW in October 1820.

On Monday 24 May, a National Mass was celebrated simultaneously across Australia on the Feast of Our Lady Help of Christians to mark the occasion. Bishop Tim Harris led the special Mass in Townsville at the Sacred Heart Cathedral.

The anniversary of Catholic education in Australia brought our school communities and families together with joyous liturgical celebrations in our Townsville community, as well as in our southern and western school communities.

Join us for a trip down memory lane and explore the history of the Townsville diocese.

Encounter

Just before the commencement of Term 2, Townsville Catholic Education hosted the Gathering 2021: Encounter, which was a 2 day professional development opportunity for teaching and corporate staff. This event gave us the opportunity to come together to connect and celebrate our Catholic identity and the Mission of the Church. It gave teachers, staff and priests a chance to connect, listen, learn, grow and renew, all of which form part of important professional learning experiences.

The program was filled with notable keynote speakers and workshop presenters and the Encounter enhanced our teachers’ vocation as professionals within the Catholic Education system.
