Celebrating the history of Catholic education

This year we celebrate the 200 year anniversary of Catholic Education in Australia, marking the bicentenary of the first ‘official’ Catholic school opening in Parramatta, NSW in October 1820. On Monday 24 May, a National Mass was celebrated simultaneously across Australia on the Feast of Our Lady Help of Christians to mark the occasion. Bishop Tim Harris led the special Mass in Townsville at the Sacred Heart Cathedral. The anniversary of Catholic education in Australia brought our school communities and families together with joyous liturgical celebrations in our Townsville community, as well as in our southern and western school communities. Join us for a trip down memory lane and explore the history of the Townsville diocese.
