SHIFT CHANGE

DARRELL NESBITT/MINNEDOSA TRIBUNE

Slowly and cautiously creeping down the hillside track on the west side of the community, this Canadian Pacific Railway engine came to a complete stop in Minnedosa to make a personnel switch. One of the two crew members stepping off the train, seen standing on the left, bid farewell to the early morning departure as it headed off to the east.

Minnedosa’s Heritage Village came alive on Sept. 30 as drummers, dancers, and community families gathered for the second annual Honouring the Truth: Minnedosa Reconciliation Event. The day’s theme –unity through shared experience –was felt in every beat of the drum and every hand joined in the final circle dance.

“This year’s circle dance was incredibly moving,” said Sabine Chorley, Executive Director of Minnedosa CDC/Tourism and a lead organizer. “It embodies unity,

healing, and community connection. In the circle, no one stands above or below another; everyone is equal. It was enjoyed by everyone.”

Attendance was up sharply from last year, with locals praising the drumming, dancing, and open conversations at the makers’ tables.

“Many told us it was their first time experiencing a powwow or hearing the drums,” Chorley said.

“People were learning not just by watching, but by talking with artisans and hearing the stories behind their work.”

The event, co-organized by the Town of Minnedosa, CDC/Tourism,

Heritage Village, Valley Life Recreation, and Giiwe Canada, was made possible through a partnership with Cenovus Energy, whose support allowed the community to build on last year’s success at Squirrel Hills.
