What’s On

Welcome

AUTUMN IN ECHUCA-MOAMA IS ALL ABOUT FAMILY-FRIENDLY FUN.

Wander through Horseshoe Lagoon to the Moama wharf and hop aboard the PS Melbourne for a one-hour sightseeing cruise, or a 90-minute BYO sunset cruise, both of which are free for children under 16 or a five-hour cruise to the Goulburn River junction, all with free all day parking.

Take the whole family to Wildergreen Moama and let the kids’ imaginations run wild in the Treehouse and The Playground, while you dine on wood-fired fare in Embr.

This year’s Rochester Sips and Sounds Festival is running alongside the Rochester Mural Festival and the Creative Seeds pop-up gallery. Watch artists paint street art in real time at the mural park or join a workshop at the courthouse.

Rochester’s main street will come alive on March 28 with live music, workshops, sip and shop, free children’s activities, market and more.

You will have the kids jumping to the left and stepping to the right, doing the time warp, as Echuca-Moama Theatre Company unleashes The Rocky Horror Show in May.

If you have a family that likes to run until they stop, enter the Backyard Ultra marathon and run the same 6.72 km course in an hour, every hour, with no end in sight.

For a more family-friendly run or walk, this year Echuca-Moama will host a Mother’s Day Classic to support people affected by breast cancer.

Echuca-Moama Model Aero Club will host two family fun events: the Fun Fly in March and a come-and-try day in April.

“Leave the kids at home” activities in autumn include overnight luxury cruising on the PS Australian Star or Fire and Rain the James Taylor songbook at the Echuca Paramount on March 28. There is so much fun to be had by the whole family this autumn in Echuca-Moama.

Experience Murray River heritage

A HISTORIC PADDLE STEAMER HAS RETURNED TO ITS HOME AFTER A 60-YEAR ABSENCE, OFFERING TOURISTS A CHANCE TO EXPERIENCE AUTHENTIC MURRAY RIVER HERITAGE.

The PS Melbourne made its milestone journey back from Mildura to Echuca-Moama in November 2025, marking a new chapter for the century-old vessel.

Now operated by a local family with deep ties to the river community, the PS Melbourne offers three distinct cruise experiences from Moama wharf.

The vessel offers a one-hour Murray River sightseeing cruise, where passengers can watch the engineer tend the wood-fired boiler and see the original twin-cylinder steam engine in action.

For a more extensive experience, the five-hour Murray-Goulburn Junction cruise departs Moama wharf at 10 am, travelling upstream to where the Murray and Goulburn Rivers meet.

The cruise includes a freshly prepared BBQ lunch served on board.

A 90-minute sunset cruise allows passengers to bring their own picnic, with drinks available on board.

All cruises feature live commentary from the captain or crew sharing stories of the Murray River and the vessel’s legacy.

Children 16 and under cruise free on the one-hour and sunset cruises, and all-day free parking is available.

The paddle steamer’s history dates back to 1912 when construction commenced at Koondrook.

Its hull was launched on July 17, 1913, with the trial run from Koondrook to Echuca completed the week before Christmas that same year.

The vessel began its first official day of service at the Moama slipway on January 1, 1914.

Originally commissioned as a public works vessel, the Melbourne was fitted with a powerful winch to remove snags and assist in building bridges, weirs and locks along the Murray.

Later sold to Evans Brothers in Echuca, it was used for picnics and excursions until 1942.

From 1948 to 1964, the boat was moored at Echuca, where ongoing preservation work ultimately saved the vessel.

In 1965, the PS Melbourne was purchased by Captain Alby Pointon and his wife Freda, who restored and reconfigured it as a passenger steamer.

It embarked on its first public cruise from Mildura Wharf on January 1, 1966 and continued operating daily until March 2020.

The vessel’s new owner, Echuca shipwright Adam Auditori, purchased the steamer in July 2024, and carried out extensive works to return it to full survey status.

Chrome bumper to bumper

THE RICH RIVER ROD AND CUSTOM CLUB WILL CELEBRATE ITS 36TH YEAR WHEN IT HOSTS THE 2026 RICH RIVER ROD RUN FROM FRIDAY, MARCH 13 TO SUNDAY, MARCH 15.

The event will be held at Jack Eddy Oval, Perricoota Rd in Moama, attracting entrants from across Australia.

Rich River Rod and Custom Club president Daniel Arnold said the event, held every two years in even years, maintained strict entry requirements.

“It is a chrome bumper event, so anything with a chrome bumper is welcome or older,” he said.

“Generally, it is vehicles that are pre-1978.”

The weekend kicks off on Friday at 5 pm with an entrants-only meet-and-greet barbecue featuring live music.

Saturday begins with an entrants’ breakfast before an observation run to Cohuna.

“We like to share around the run and travel to the four corners of our beautiful area,” Daniel said.

“We are hoping to get all the entrants to participate, group up and come along.”

Saturday afternoon offers free time to explore Echuca-Moama attractions, with entrants encouraged to cruise High St among eateries and hotels.

Sunday features the Chrome Bumper Family Show and Shine starting at 9 am, concluding at 3 pm.

“Sunday, we are going to have our family Show ‘n Shine at Jack Eddy oval,” Daniel said.

“Previously, we have had 300-plus chrome bumper entrants, but I reckon we might have a little bit more.”

The event includes loads of trade stands, live music from Scotty Baker and Rocker Cover Racing, camel and pony rides, face painting for children 12 and under, and hundreds of hot rods and custom cars.

Awards include a straight eight judged by club members, with presentations at 12.30 pm.

A new junior rod category welcomes participants under 25.

Embr chef fires up

BORN ON THE ISLAND OF SARDINIA, CHEF DANIEL GIRAU GREW UP IMMERSED IN THE RHYTHMS OF TRADITIONAL ITALIAN LIFE.

His grandparents’ farm was his first classroom cheese made by hand, salami hung to cure with patience, and food treated as both craft and ritual.

By the age of 10, when his family opened a restaurant in Rome, hospitality was already second nature.

He stretched dough, carried plates, and absorbed the hum of a kitchen alive with conversation, movement and joy.

Daniel’s career soon carried him across Europe.

From sunlit coastal bistros to mountain kitchens shaped by cold winters, he worked throughout France, Spain, the Netherlands, the UK, Germany, Belgium and Italy.

Along the way, he cooked in everything from relaxed neighbourhood trattorias to Michelin-starred dining rooms, learning how place, climate and culture shape food.

These experiences formed his signature style bold yet grounded, expressive yet respectful of tradition where coastal freshness meets rustic, alpine comfort.

Australia marked a new chapter.

Drawn to its energy and openness, Daniel immersed himself in modern Australian cuisine, working across both acclaimed restaurants and community-focused kitchens.

He cooked alongside chefs from around the world, expanding his palate and approach, while staying anchored in the fundamentals he learned early on.

A pivotal chapter followed in a commercial pasta factory, where Daniel experimented deeply with doughs, breads, focaccia and flour varieties.

This hands-on work sharpened his understanding of texture, fermentation, and fire, reinforcing his respect for simplicity done well knowledge that now underpins every dish he creates.

Now settled in Moama, Daniel found his place at Embr a space that felt immediately familiar.

Here, tradition is honoured but never static, served with warmth, generosity, and a playful modern edge.

For Daniel, Embr is the spirit of an Italian grandmother’s kitchen reimagined for today.

As the Maker of Flame, he brings his journey full circle.

Every blistered pizza, every hand-rolled pasta, and every slow-roasted cut carries the influence of Sardinian farms, Roman kitchens, European travels, and Australian creativity food that is comforting yet surprising, rustic yet refined.

“Fire,” Daniel said, “is the heartbeat of cooking it brings honesty, simplicity, and a little theatre to every dish.”

Bringing James Taylor’s songs to life

AWARD-WINNING PERFORMER DARREN COGGAN IS BRINGING THE TIMELESS SONGS OF JAMES TAYLOR TO LIFE IN HIS CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED SHOW FIRE AND RAIN THE JAMES TAYLOR SONGBOOK.

The heartfelt performance takes audiences on a musical journey through Taylor’s iconic catalogue, featuring classics like How Sweet It Is to Be Loved by You, Country Road, Carolina in My Mind, Sweet Baby James, You’ve Got a Friend and Fire and Rain.

Coggan, one of Australia’s most exciting and diverse artists, has carved an impressive career in the country music industry with a collection of Golden Guitars, Independent Country Music Awards and the coveted Toyota Star Maker under his belt.

His touring productions celebrating the songbooks of Glen Campbell, John Denver, James Taylor and Cat Stevens have inspired audiences globally, including sell-out seasons at the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall and Liverpool Philharmonic.

“The artists that I love, James Taylor, Cat Stevens, John Denver, Glen Campbell, they are artists whose work I feel that I can do justice to and replicate authentically,” Coggan said.

“With James Taylor, I hope that I can deliver the same sense of joy and yearning that he had andthat the audiences emerge from the theatre feeling as uplifted and inspired by the songs as I do.”

Coggan has been immersed in Taylor’s music since childhood rating You Can Close Your Eyes, the B-side of Taylor’s You’ve Got A Friend single, as his favourite song of all time.

“I have been a fan of James Taylor for as long as I can remember,” he said.

“I find great refuge in his albums and Taylor’s baritone is so comforting, familiar, warm and friendly, but it is so much more than the voice.

“He is a superb storyteller whose songs are enduringly relevant and take you on a journey, in a very personal way.”

To hear more about Coggan’s love for James Taylor’s music, you can listen to The RIV … Talks podcast at riverineherald.com.au/podcasts Fire and Rain The James Taylor Songbook will be performed at Echuca Paramount Theatre on Saturday, March 28 at 7.30 pm.

The line-up includes headliner Casey Barnes with Beccy Cole, Amber Lawrence, Andrew Swift, Hayley Jensen, Tori Darke and Gareth Leach & the Narrative of Hope.

Singer-songwriter Gareth Leach, who grew up in Echuca, expressed his excitement about returning home.

Gareth thinks all the musicians on the billing at the Echuca Country Music Festival are all great people.

“We love hanging out with Andrew Swift; he has been a mate of ours all the way through the

journey, and we always like playing with Swifty,” he said.

“Then hanging out with Casey Barnes is always a lot of fun.

“He is a great dude, has got a lot of energy and it is really contagious backstage.”

Gareth praised the festival’s community atmosphere.

Collections and keepers captured

COLLECTIONS AND THEIR KEEPERS, A PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION PROMOTING THE RIVER COUNTRY HERITAGE TRAIL, LAUNCHED ON DECEMBER 3, 2025.

The project was developed over several years in collaboration between Murray River Council’s museum adviser and four local heritage groups, extending across Moama, Barham and Moulamein.

“The trail celebrates four local museums, their collections and the people who preserve the regions’ heritage,” Murray River Council tourism marketing and events officer Kristy Hayes said.

The museum trail includes Border Flywheelers Museum, Moulamein Courthouse, Moulamein Heritage Village and Old Moama Precinct.

“These groups represent a diverse cross-section of river country heritage, including river trade, agriculture, domestic life, civic history and early industry,” Kristy said.

Photographic artist Nina O’Brien captured the exhibition, which features pictures of the objects and their keepers, accompanied by a brief story about their historical significance.

The trail features 13 objects across the four museums to make up the journey through history.

At the Border Flywheelers Museum, visitors can discover the machines that powered rural life including the Big Fowler Steam Engine, Audiffren Refrigeration Plant and other domestic collections.

Step inside the remarkable landmark brimming with captivating local stories at Moulamein Courthouse, where you will discover the Moulamein Wongi and explore Bill Stanley’s meticulously kept shearing tally books.

Wander through buildings from the pioneering days at Moulamein Heritage Village to discover the

Treasured objects at the Old Moama Precinct along the trail include fascinating river trade artefacts, featuring items from the historic Telegraph Station and the Captain’s Cottage.

The keepers are local volunteers, caretakers and storytellers.

“Their significance lies not only in preserving physical objects, but in passing on knowledge, memories and local identity to future generations,” Kristy said.

“They are also active, volunteer-led museums that form the backbone of the River Country Museum Trail, making them ideal partners for a project focused on collections, storytelling and community connection.

“It reinforces that heritage is not just about objects, but about people and place.”

Visitors eager to embark on this heritage adventure can access an image of the trail map, locations and directions to each museum on the River Country website.

Ready, set, marathon

WOODY’S MURRAY TO MOYNE ANNUAL CYCLE RELAY IS SET TO RAISE A SUBSTANTIAL AMOUNT OF FUNDS FOR HEALTH CHARITIES AND ORGANISATIONS ON SATURDAY, MARCH 28 AND SUNDAY, MARCH 29.

The event, which began in 1987, honours the late Graham Woodrup, a competitive cyclist from Port Fairy who set numerous long-distance records. Woodrup established the Murray to Moyne five years before he died. It now raises about $350,000 a year for health services across Victoria.

There are three types of relay rides that teams of participants can undertake.

The longest and most popular is the ‘Night Riders’, a 520 km journey from either Mildura or Echuca into Hamilton to stay on Saturday night, and continuing on to Port Fairy on Sunday.

Riders departing from Echuca will leave from the Port Discovery Centre, encountering a compulsory rest point at Stawell, before pushing on to the Hamilton Lions Club.

Those leaving from Mildura must rest in Warracknabeal, before continuing on to Hamilton.

The marathon Saturday will take teams from an early morning start into a night-time finish, but those looking to avoid the night-time portion have alternate entry options.

Day Timers’ teams exclude the ride into Hamilton, journeying the route until dusk on Saturday before joining the Night Riders for the 90 km from Hamilton to Port Fairy on Sunday.

Teams looking for an easier ride can do the Sunday Striders, which only includes the Sunday section.

The entry fee for the Night Riders and Day Timers are both $120 per person, while the Sunday Striders is $60, with registrations now open.

Doing the time warp

ECHUCA-MOAMA THEATRE COMPANY WILL DO THE TIME WARP WHEN IT UNLEASHES THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW IN MAY.

The cult musical will be directed by Tricia Deakin, with Chris McDonald as musical director leading the on-stage band, and Lisa Styles as choreographer and promises a bold, highenergy celebration of identity, transformation and unapologetic self-expression.

“This show has endured because it’s brave, it’s bold and it gives people permission to be unapologetically themselves,” Tricia said.

“That spirit is at the heart of what we’re creating.”

Part sci-fi, part horror spoof and part glam rock concert, Rocky Horror remains as daring and deliciously defiant today as it was half a century ago.

Commanding the stage as the iconic Dr Frank-N-Furter is Dennis Carter, supported by Zay Ryan as his muscle-bound “perfect specimen of a man” Rocky.

Darcy Elliott takes on sinister underling Riff Raff, while Tamara Cadd stars as his devilish sister Magenta/Trixie.

Dillon Shelley stars as the sweetly awkward Brad and Indra Hubble as his wide-eyed fiancée Janet, while Juliana De Quilettes taps her way onto the stage as Columbia, and Gerry Oman takes on the dual role of Eddie and Dr Scott.

Completing the cast are the show’s six Phantoms Hayley Franklin, Ivy Jensen, Molli Johns, Bec Kellett, Taylah Logie, Sarah Mott, Darcy McLindon and Sue Windsor who help drive the story’s electrifying energy from start to finish.

One of the most exciting creative elements of EMTC’s production is the decision to feature a live band on stage, fully immersed in the action.

“We’re bringing the musicians into the heart of the show to amplify the gritty rock energy that makes Rocky Horror so iconic,” Tricia said.

“The result will be a thrilling fusion of vintage horror, glam rock and punk-inspired design.”

Audiences can expect a confident ensemble ready to lean into the show’s cheeky humour, theatrical excess and rebellious heart.

The Rocky Horror Show will take to the stage at the Paramount Theatre from May 28 to 31, promising six performances filled with nostalgia, attitude and electric live performance. Tickets will be on sale in March through the Paramount. For more information and updates, follow EMTC on Facebook and Instagram.

Backyard ultra tests runners

ANY RUNNER WORTH THEIR SALT WILL TELL YOU THAT COMPLETING 6.72 KM IN AN HOUR SHOULDN’T PROVE CHALLENGING FOR EVEN AN INTERMEDIATE ATHLETE.

However, what if you had to repeat the feat every hour, on the hour, with no end in sight?

That is the challenge that can be taken on in Echuca at the 2 Rivers Backyard Ultra, set to begin at noon on Saturday, April 11.

The unique running event sees its brave competitors take on a 6.72 km course around Scenic Dve in Echuca, the Murray River a near constant companion at competitors’ sides.

Once they return to the start/finish line, runners get what rest they can, because at the top of the hour it all begins again.

Unlike most running events, there is no set endpoint, with competitors running the circuit hour after hour until they can go no further.

The last athlete standing must complete one final lap before being declared the Backyard Ultra champion.

Last year’s event saw the winner complete 36 laps, finishing at midnight on Monday morning.

There is some respite at the start/finish area, with everything from professional athlete nutrition to lollies, coffee and hot food on site to give athletes a boost before setting out again.

Sixty athletes took on the challenge last year, including 20 from the Echuca Moama Run Club, with organisers hoping to continue to grow the event in its third running this year.

Bikers blessed

THIS APRIL, AROUND 100 MOTORCYCLISTS WILL ROLL INTO ECHUCA TO BE BLESSED AT CHRIST CHURCH ANGLICAN, SHOWING THE EVENT’S GROWING POPULARITY.

The annual Anointing of the Boneshakers event brings together motorcycle, tricycle and Can-Am Spyder enthusiasts to honour their fallen friends and receive God’s blessing.

Now in its third year at Echuca, the event welcomes northern Victoria’s entire motorcycle community to come together, including family members and supporters who don’t ride.

The free event will be held at Christ Church Anglican at 500 High St, Echuca on Sunday, April 12.

Rev’d Phil will lead the service alongside a church clergy member.

From 10am, attendees can socialise, admire the bikes, and enjoy morning tea together, with a coffee van providing refreshments for purchase.

The ceremony will begin at 11.15am with a talk by Rev’d Phil, followed by a parade of bikers rolling through the church grounds to receive their blessing.

“A few years back, local clubs approached the Minister to Tatura, keen to establish something closer to home,” Rev’d Phil said.

“They wanted to honour their fallen mates and keep it focused.”

The event originally started in Tatura and was established by the Northern Victoria Spider riders.

“They coined the term ‘anointing’, so ‘Anointing of the Boneshakers’ became our thing,” Rev’d Phil said.

“We shifted gears to Echuca in 2024.

“It’s vital for the riding community to come together and honour those they’ve lost.

“Sadly, they do lose people in their circle. These are their riding mates, and everyone’s aware of life’s fragility.”

The event will conclude with lunch at a local pub. The free event will be held at Christ Church Anglican at 500 High St, Echuca on Sunday, April 12.

Wind beneath model aircraft wings

THE SKIES ABOVE ECHUCA-MOAMA ARE CLEAR FOR YOU TO FLY A MODEL AIRCRAFT.

Echuca-Moama Model Aero Club is preparing for its thrilling annual festival of flight weekend, Fun Fly on Saturday, March 14 and Sunday, March 15.

A major highlight of the Fun Fly, sponsored by Dessert Aircraft Australia, will be a talented group of professional model aero pilots joining the club from Taiwan on Saturday.

Fun Fly will be followed closely by the comeand-try day on Saturday, April 18, offering a unique opportunity to experience the thrill of model aviation.

The VMAA Flying Field on Watson Rd, Kanyapella, a secure and family-friendly venue with easy access, will once again provide the perfect runway for the model planes.

Echuca-Moama Model Aero Club secretary and treasurer Fred West said pilots from across Victoria could look forward to jam-packed days of aircraft, camping and community.

“Pilots and spectators can see us fly many different types of model aeroplanes aerobatic, jets and helicopters,” Fred said.

“All kinds of model aircraft are welcome.”

Fred said the event welcomed everyone, not just aircraft owners, making it a wonderful experience for pilots’ families and all spectators.

“It’s good to see people like me enjoy the sport and the camaraderie,” he said.

A fantastic range of delicious refreshments will be available at both events, with a well-stocked canteen offering hearty hot meals, tasty snacks, and freshly made barista coffee and tea on-site.

The come-and-try day welcomes anyone curious about model aircraft, featuring experienced instructors, beginner-friendly training aircraft and exciting demonstration flights to enjoy.

“This day is aimed at attracting new people that might be interested in model aviation to come and try with the aim of them becoming involved in our terrific sport,” Fred said.

The come-and-try day entry is free and includes a barbecue lunch.

For the annual festival of flight weekend, there is an entry fee for pilots while spectators enjoy free admission.

Pilots are encouraged to take advantage of the convenient on-site camping facilities for the fun fly weekend, ensuring they can fully immerse themselves in every moment of the action.

Shiny Cadillacs showcased

THE CADILLAC LASALLE CLUB OF AUSTRALIA WILL SHOWCASE WHAT ORGANISERS CLAIM WILL BE THE BIGGEST DISPLAY OF CADILLACS EVER SEEN IN AUSTRALIA WHEN THEY BRING 82 VEHICLES TO ECHUCA IN APRIL.

The Cadillac LaSalle Club of Australia Victorian president Steve Ashman said the display would span more than a century of automotive history.

“We will have cars from 1912 all the way through to 2026, about 82 cars on display,” he said.

“Cadillacs are an American car that has been around since the early 1900s, around 1908, right through to the current day, still manufacturing now as 2027 electric vehicles.”

The event will attract enthusiasts from across the globe, with 195 registered attendees travelling from every Australian state, New Zealand, Germany, United States and the Netherlands from April 13 to 19.

“We have been sponsored by General Motors in Australia, which is General Motors United States and they are bringing three brand new, current model vehicles to the show on the Saturday,” Steve said.

The display highlights dramatic technological evolution in the automotive industry.

“One car is a veterans motor vehicle, with wooden wheels from 1912, all the way through to now in 2026, they are full electric vehicles with many modern improvements,” he said.

His personal 1954 Fleetwood Special demonstrates this advancement, featuring electric seats and windows that were revolutionary for the era.

Cars will be displayed at the MOVE museum in Shepparton from 10 am to 3 pm on April 14, followed by stops in Rochester, Colbinabbin Hotel and Tongala Vietnam memorial on Friday, April 17.

The main show and shine event runs from 9 am to 3 pm on Saturday, April 18 at the Port of Echuca.

Step into creative studio trail

THE CAMPASPE ARTISTS STUDIO TRAIL IS SET TO RETURN FOR ITS SECOND YEAR, WITH OPENING NIGHT ON FRIDAY, MAY 1, FOLLOWED BY THE STUDIO TRAIL RUNNING ON SATURDAY, MAY 2, AND SUNDAY, MAY 3.

The event offers art lovers the opportunity to step inside the creative spaces of local artists throughout the Campaspe Shire.

The trail offers a distinctive experience, allowing visitors to interact directly with artists, watch them at work, and learn about their creative methods. Art enthusiasts can purchase works directly from the artists’ studios at prices below standard gallery rates.

The success of the inaugural event in 2025 drew visitors from 97 different postcodes.

More than 25 artists are expected to open studios in every part of Campaspe Shire in 2026.

Three community art spaces may open as part of the Campaspe Artists Studio Trail for artists who practise their art at home and don’t have a publicly accessible studio.

The Kyabram Town Hall Gallery, the Rushworth Art Depot and the Foundry Arts Space in Echuca were all part of the trail in 2025, and are hoping to return in 2026.

Trail maps and detailed artist information will be accessible through the event website, visitor information centres and shire libraries.

Mother’s Day Classic date set

THE ECHUCA MOTHER’S DAY CLASSIC WILL TAKE PLACE ON SUNDAY, MAY 10, OFFERING PARTICIPANTS THE CHOICE OF A 5KM OR 7KM WALK OR RUN STARTING FROM LIONS PARK.

Echuca Mother’s Day Classic host Emma Godden said participants could choose between the two distance options.

“Come join the fun day with all of us and enjoy.” she said.

The event hub will be based at Hopwood Gardens in Echuca, featuring market stalls, food and music.

Emma said it was important to hold the event locally.

“It is to help women with breast cancer and ovarian cancer,” she said.

She emphasised why events like this matter.

“It shows mothers, women and women figures are strong,” she said.

“It shows people, who have cancer, that they are not alone in this, and it is fun for everyone to get together for Mother’s Day and help this amazing cause.”

The Mother’s Day Classic raises funds for breast cancer and ovarian cancer research through community fundraising, online donations, merchandise sales and registration fees.

Over 28 years, the Mother’s Day Classic community has donated $50.8 million to fund lifesaving research.

Thanks to this research, the five-year survival rate for breast cancer has increased from 84 per cent to 92 per cent since 1998.

However, ovarian cancer presents greater challenges, with treatment options showing only marginal improvement over 30 years and no, readily available early detection test.

The average five-year survival rate for ovarian cancer remains just 49 per cent.

Donations can be made through the Mother’s Day Classic website or Facebook.

Comedy festival energy packed

THE 2026 MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL COMEDY FESTIVAL ROADSHOW WILL BRING AUSTRALIA’S BIGGEST COMEDY FESTIVAL TO ECHUCA ON FRIDAY, MAY 15 AT THE ECHUCA PARAMOUNT THEATRE.

For almost three decades, the festival has been touring across Australia, delivering comedy to regional audiences.

Comedian Sez, who will perform on the Victorian leg of the Roadshow, is excited about visiting Echuca for the first time.

“Echuca, I’ve never been there, so I’m keen to see what the vibe is,” she said.

“I’m keen to go on a paddle steamer for an hour.”

With only 15 to 20 minutes on stage, as there are five or six comedians performing on the night, Sez plans an energetic performance.

“I just try and run on stage and just get everyone amped up, I do a lot of audience interaction, call and responds, getting the audience to sing a tiny bit, in a fun and filled way,” she said.

“I get the audience to scream as well.”

Sez noted differences between city and regional audiences.

“I think doing shows in the city, people are like, ‘Oh, that is very vulgar, and I really respect you, you are so brave to talk about that,” she said.

“But when doing Roadshow, people are more like, it’s not a big deal, she is saying her truth.”

Her Melbourne International Comedy Festival show is called Sorry, what?

“It’s the kind of vibe of the show, it’s just me not understanding everything, and being like, ‘What the hell is going on?’” she said.

“In Echuca, there will definitely be some songs from that show, because that show will be good.”

Tickets are available at the Echuca Paramount box office or at echucaparamount.com

Explore Melbourne to Murray Silo Art Trail

A NEW MELBOURNE TO THE MURRAY SILO ART ROAD TRIP BROCHURE WILL BE AVAILABLE THIS SUMMER, GUIDING VISITORS TO THE REGION AROUND THE GRAIN SILOS THAT HAVE BEEN TRANSFORMED INTO TOWERING WORKS OF ART.

Silo art has brought colour and creativity to regional Australia and celebrates the stories and spirit of communities, with the silo art trail a popular attraction for both tourists and residents.

Moira Shire Council launched the inaugural Melbourne to the Murray Silo Art Road Trip brochure in 2022 and has now joined with Campaspe Shire Council to produce this updated version, which maps out the silo art across the whole region.

Moira Shire Council chair administrator Graeme Emonson said working with Campaspe Shire Council on the expanded brochure was a natural progression.

“The silo art trail doesn’t stop at shire boundaries,” Graeme said.

“We want visitors to enjoy the full breadth of what our beautiful region has to offer, from our charming small towns to our mighty Murray River, and the silo art trail is an essential and exciting part of that.”

Campaspe Shire Mayor Daniel Mackrell also welcomed the new brochure.

“I’m delighted that, in collaboration with Moira Shire Council, the stunning silo murals across our shire are now featured on the Melbourne to the Murray Silo Art Road Trip map,” Daniel said.

“This recognition not only showcases the incredible talent of the artists and the stories behind these artworks, but will also attract visitors to explore our region, boosting local businesses and strengthening community pride.”

Thirty thousand copies of the new brochure have been printed, with 10,000 copies for distribution in Melbourne and other areas of regional Victoria, and 10,000 each for Moira and Campaspe shire councils to distribute to visitors in our region.

Calling all storytellers

ECHUCA-MOAMA FESTIVAL OF STORIES WILL BRING TOGETHER WRITERS, MUSICIANS, ARTISTS AND STORYTELLERS FROM ACROSS AUSTRALIA FOR THREE RELAXED DAYS BY THE RIVER.

From October 16 to 18, 2026 Echuca-Moama will welcome some of Australia’s leading writers, musicians and performers and the organisers can’t wait for you to join them.

The festival will be filled with talks, readings, live music, workshops and shared experiences around town.

“Stories can be told in so many ways: through song, art, the written word, podcasts and performance,” Festival of Stories president Christy O’Brien said.

“We encourage both locals and visitors to spend the weekend soaking up stories.

“There will be long literary lunches under vines, live music after dark, country wisdom shared over scones and tea, art and comedy, lively conversations and creative workshops you won’t find anywhere else.

“From author conversations and performances to art and guided nature walks, this is a festival to enjoy with friends, at your own pace.

“You can bring your book club or bring a friend.”

Echuca-Moama, on Yorta Yorta Country, is a landscape shaped by connection, where three rivers meet and, for thousands of years, people have gathered to share knowledge, traditions and stories.

That enduring spirit of locals and travellers finding common ground through storytelling continues in the inaugural Festival of Stories.

The premise of this new event on the EchucaMoama calendar is that everyone has a story to share, and the uniqueness of this gathering lies in the way it will bring people together.

Unearth both local storytellers alongside some of Australia’s most well known and loved storytellers, across a myriad of platforms.

Shake off winter blues

THE WINTER BLUES FESTIVAL IS GEARING UP FOR ANOTHER UNFORGETTABLE YEAR IN 2026.

With dates locked in for July 23 to 26, the festival will once again bring the best blues talent from across Australia to Echuca-Moama.

Touted as one of Australia’s most affordable festival weekends since 1999, the Winter Blues Festival offers free entry across its four-day program.

With accommodation and dining options catering to a range of budgets, the festival provides an

accessible escape for music lovers an important distinction in today’s cost -of -living climate.

Beyond the music, the festival generates significant cultural and economic benefits for the region.

Local businesses, from hotels to cafés, thrive during the event, highlighting its importance to the community.

The festival is a not - for-profit organisation run by a dedicated volunteer committee.

Mack trucks roll in

THE KYABRAM MACK MUSTER IS SET TO RETURN TO THE KYABRAM SHOWGROUNDS ON MARCH 21 AND 22, SHOWCASING THE RICH HERITAGE OF ONE OF THE WORLD’S LONGEST-RUNNING TRUCK MANUFACTURERS.

Kyabram Mack Muster committee member Tim Dawes explains the event will feature Mack trucks spanning from the 1920s to present-day models.

“We are a group of like-minded people that have come together to run the event,” he said.

“We are all enthusiasts of the Mack brand.

“Mack is probably one of the world’s oldest continuous truck manufacturers.

“They started in 1900, so this year they are celebrating 125 years of continuous production.”

The show’s centrepiece will be Australia’s oldest surviving Mack truck, a 1923 model AC owned by David Dawes.

“It originally worked in Melbourne, delivering oil for a vacuum oil company back when it was brand new in the early ‘20s,” Tim said.

“It drives at a blistering 12 miles, 19 km, per hour, so watch out for slow-moving bugs.”

The celebration includes a special dinner at Parkland Golf Club, bringing together former Mack employees and muster participants.

Building on the success of the previous event, which drew 175 Mack trucks, organisers are aiming to attract more than 200 vehicles in 2026.

“It is not just Mack trucks at the muster, all other brands are welcome, too,” Tim said.

“We have a different section for all other makes and models, for anyone who is into old trucks, to bring along.”

The muster will be hosted at the Kyabram Showgrounds in Allan St, with cash-only entry available at the gates.

Exhibitors can participate without charge.

For information and to secure a ticket to the Saturday night dinner, follow Kyabram Mack Muster on Facebook.

Boatarama coming to Moama

BOAT ENTHUSIASTS ARE IN FOR A TREAT IN MARCH, WITH MOAMA WATER SPORTS CLUB SET TO HOLD THE MOAMA BOATARAMA.

Building on the Southern 80 60th anniversary boat show held last year, the club has expanded the event this year beyond ski racing to include race boats, social boats and tinnys.

“We’ve called it a Boatarama because we want to have it open to social boats and other crafts as well as our ski race boats,” club president Steve Shipp said.

“It’s to broaden it and to make it a bigger event for more people to come and see.”

A Riviera craft and title-winning tinny are already locked in for the event, with the club looking for more boat owners interested in adding their own crafts to the display.

The Boatarama will be held at Brick Alley Oval, Moama, on Kirchhofer St, from 11 am to 6 pm on Saturday, March 21, with entry for $5.

Ski racing has been suspended for the past 18 months as a investigation into the sport’s safety was conducted.

Shipp said the Boatarama was a great way to keep the boating community together and support the club as it awaited the sport’s return.

“It’s really to get everyone together and raise some money to keep the club afloat during the time when we’re not racing,” he said.

“Hopefully, we’ll have the Beehag back in the water in November as planned, and we’ll be right to go.”

The club traditionally runs two major races a year, the Beehag 100 in November and the Southern 80 in February or March.

Explore Campaspe’s op shop trail: vintage finds and bargains

FOR THOSE WHO LOVE TO FIND A TREASURE AT AN OP SHOP, THEN YOU NEED TO GRAB THE CAMPASPE SHIRE COUNCIL’S NEW OP SHOP TRAIL MAP.

Along the same vein as the Arts Trail, History and Cruisin in Campaspe Maps, the map will make it easier for residents and visitors to explore the region’s much-loved op shops, support local charities and embrace a sustainable circular economy.

The trail brings together stores across the region offering vintage fashion, homewares, books and bargains, with each stop helping to reduce waste and fund community causes.

Developed collaboratively with op shops across the municipality, the map makes it easier for residents and visitors to explore their stores.

Mayor Daniel Mackrell said the council was proud to support community charities while encouraging sustainable tourism.

“The Op Shop Trail celebrates the passion of local volunteers and the joy of giving pre -loved goods a new life,” he said.

“It’s a simple way to shop economically and sustainably whilst keeping unwanted items out of landfill.”

Cr Mackrell also encouraged residents to not leave items outside op shops or donation bins, as the disposal work and costs were passed on to volunteers. Poor quality or damaged household clothing and textiles may be taken to the council’s resource recovery centres for free.

Roaring tractor pull revs up

THE ELMORE TRACTOR PULL IS ROARING INTO THE ELMORE EVENTS CENTRE ON SATURDAY, MARCH 14.

The tractor pull continues that tradition, showcasing some of the toughest machines and most dedicated competitors in Australian motorsport.

A modified tractor pulls a weighted sled along an 11 m wide x 100 m long dirt track, and as the tractor pulls the sled further, the more forward the weight goes on the sled, causing the sled to get harder to pull.

When the tractor “pulls” the whole 100 m, this is called a full pull.

Tractor pulling is known as the most powerful motorsport, as some tractors feature more than one engine and can exceed 1000 hp.

This year is particularly significant, marking 50 years since the first tractor pull was held in Australia.

Elmore has become one of the key venues supporting the sport, providing a consistent platform for competition and helping to maintain the long-standing tradition of tractor pulling in Australia.

At the heart of the event is the strong partnership with Down Under Tractor Pulling, which coordinates and runs multiple tractor pulling events across Australia.

Adding even more excitement to the night, VicMow Victorian Mower Racing Association tear around the track, delivering fast-paced, high-energy action that keeps the momentum rolling between pulls.

Their presence brings a different flavour of motorsport to Elmore, making the event a true all-round experience for families, enthusiasts and first-timers alike.

As engines cool and the dust settles, one thing is clear, the Elmore Tractor Pull isn’t just about who pulls the sled the furthest.

It’s about honouring 50 years of Australian tractor pulling, celebrating community, and keeping a powerful tradition roaring into the future.

Tickets for this unmissable event are available online through the Elmore Field Days website or at the gate on the day.

Bring on bush ballads

THE BARHAM BALLADEERS FESTIVAL WILL RUN FROM MAY 4 TO 7, OFFERING FOUR DAYS OF BUSH BALLADS AND LIVE ENTERTAINMENT.

Tickets are available at clubarham.com.au for the event featuring talented artists including Brian Letton, Diane Coombs and Evan Platschinda.

Independent recording artist Evan Platschinda has been performing at the festival for more than 10 years.

Evan highlighted the connection between country music and ballads in Australia.

“There is not a lot of difference when you talk about country and ballads,” he said.

“In Australia, we have got what we call our Australian Bush Balladeers Association, and they promote and foster the Australian bush ballad style.

“A ballad is like a poem; it is a story done in song.

“There are always songs, usually about factual things in a lot of cases, maybe with a little poetic license.

“Most balladeers, like me, we write a lot of our own material as well.

The most well-known Australian balladeer was Slim Dusty.

The festival features two venues with performances running from 10 am to 10 pm daily.

“At the Balladeers at Barham, there are two venues, the auditorium with its big stage and big dance floor, as well as a stage out front in the main lounge,” Evan said.

“Each artist gets an individual hour out in the lounge area and that is when you usually promote your own material.

“The one I get requested most for is a song that, surprisingly enough, wasn’t written by me, but I wish it was.

“Slim Jones, who passed away some six, seven years ago now, Slim gave me this song to put on my last balladeer’s album, and it’s called Unsuitably Dressed, and that’s probably the one that I find that I get most request for.

Steam-powered adventure

The Border Flywheel Club and Heritage Museum is gearing up for its 28th annual Barham Vintage Engine and Machinery Rally on May 16 and 17.

This weekend event offers something special for machinery enthusiasts and families looking for a unique day out.

Border Flywheel Club vice-president Richard Edwards, a rally veteran since day one, shared his plans for this year’s rally.

“I’ve scaled back on bringing rock crushers and such, but I’ll be tending to the steam engines, making sure they’re well-fed with wood,” Richard said.

The rally will be a treasure trove of vintage machinery, including a 1910 Clayton and Shuttleworth engine and a newly acquired Ruston behemoth from Selleck’s orchard.

“It’s a six-tonne monster, a single-cylinder beast from around 1920,” Richard said.

This year’s theme celebrates English and Australian engines, mainly stationary engines.

“If you’ve got any old-timers who can still work those contraptions, we’d love to have them on board,” Richard said.

Visitors can watch the impressive 25 horsepower Marshall engine in action, alongside the fascinating Eagle Creek pump steam engine.

The event will also feature radio-controlled model trucks, a working belt-driven hay baler display, and a classic car show and shine for car enthusiasts.

Exhibitors can enjoy free unpowered on-site camping and a meal on Saturday night.

The rally will take over the Border Flywheel Club and Heritage Museum at 9 Jamieson Ave, Barham, running from 9.30 am to 5 pm on Saturday and 9.30 am to 3 pm on Sunday.
