As we move into spring, the sun is set to shine a little brighter in Echuca Moama with the inaugural Retirees on the River, Seniors Celebrations Echuca Moama, running from September 7 to 18.

Designed especially for seniors and retirees (and anyone who loves a relaxed escape), this 12-day program invites visitors to slow down, stay a little longer, and enjoy the best of the Murray. Take time to explore art trail

THE RIVER COUNTRY ART TRAIL IS FIVE LARGE-SCALE ARTWORKS IN COMMUNITIES ACROSS THE MURRAY RIVER COUNCIL REGION.

“Together, these works form a unique outdoor gallery. One that, we hope, will encourage people to travel between our towns, explore our landscapes and connect with local stories.”

Public works in Barham, Moulamein, Moama, Tooleybuc and Mathoura have been created in collaboration with communities over the past 18 months.

Murray River Council Mayor John Harvie said the project highlighted the power of creativity to reshape familiar spaces.

“What were once everyday pieces of infrastructure ... have been transformed into striking landmarks that tell the story of our river country,” he said.

“The project demonstrates how creativity can breathe new life into familiar places, turning them into destinations that inspire both locals and visitors alike.

The project began in 2024, with a range of artists submitting designs that were then voted on by communities involved.

Four mural artists were selected from 88 applicants, while 47 proposals were submitted for the Tooleybuc sculpture, with one artist ultimately chosen. At the project’s launch, artists reflected on the design process, their collaboration with local communities and what they hoped audiences would take from the works.

Moama’s mural, by Hiroyasu Tsuri (also known as Twoone), draws on the town’s connection to nature and cultural heritage.

In Mathoura, Spanish artist Antonio Segura (Dulk) blended elements of fantasy with the local environment to inspire children to dream and visitors to explore the town.

Barham’s mural, by Gus Eagleton, combines realism and storytelling to showcase the town’s history and its connection to the Murray River.

In Moulamein, Khosnaran Khurelbaatar (Heesco) worked closely with the community to create a three-part piece highlighting the surrounding environment, the region’s agricultural roots and the town’s heritage.

A 110-metre sculpture in Tooleybuc, delivered by artist Stuart Green, depicts a figure reaching out to gather fruit as a tribute to the community’s agricultural richness.

Daily cruising is a staple for the Port, with the

historic PS Pevensey leaving the dock no less than four times each day.

In just one hour, you’ll get a taste of Echuca’s rich riverboat history with a side of adventure by asking the captain all of your questions.

On land, The Port’s Discovery Centre brings the history to life. Visitors can explore original wharf structures and steam engines, learn about Echuca’s role in the wool trade, and gain insight into how the river shaped the region’s development.

Enjoy a day at the races

IT’S SET TO BE ANOTHER ENTHRALLING WINTER RACING SEASON AT ECHUCA RACING CLUB, WITH SEVERAL MEETS SCHEDULED IN JUNE AND JULY.

The meets offer an exciting day out for those who love their racing or are simply after some fun. Echuca Racing Club provides a mix of entertainment, a chill atmosphere, and gripping action on the racecourse.

The winter season begins with two free admission race days on June 2 and June 23, featuring dining packages from $50 in the Pavilion, the club’s premium facility.

The packages allow race-goers to enjoy formal country dining track-side, prepared by Two Tarts Catering, while being greeted with sweeping panoramic views of the track and winning post.

ON THE THIRD WEEKEND IN OCTOBER, ECHUCA MOAMA WILL TRANSFORM INTO A RIVERSIDE WONDERLAND OF WORDS, MUSIC, ART AND PERFORMANCE, AS STORYTELLERS FROM ACROSS AUSTRALIA GATHER FOR THE INAUGURAL FESTIVAL OF STORIES.

The river and red gums will set the scene for proud Indigenous singer-songwriter and five-time ARIA winner Dan Sultan who will perform alongside celebrated local Yorta Yorta musicians Benny Walker and Madi Colville-Walker.

One of Australia’s sharpest wits, Sammy J, looks set to join the line-up fresh from his sold-out shows at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, while award-winning screenwriter, director and producer Joanna Werner will bring the world of screen storytelling to the Murray, on the back of her acclaimed ABC TV series Goolagong.

International speaker, author and wellbeing educator Kemi Nekvapil will be sharing her extraordinary story and wisdom over the weekend. Festival of Stories president Christy O’Brien said this was not purely a writers’ festival or a music festival, but instead an opportunity to be immersed in stories told in many ways.

“There’s nothing quite like the feeling of being moved by a story, a book or the line of a song,” she said.

“That cultural experience is what we want to bring to town.

“And there’s no better place to host it than alongside the river.

“We want to honour and celebrate that tradition and create new ways to connect in our busy modern world.”

Yorta Yorta Elder and academic Dr Wayne Atkinson will share his powerful Yorta Yorta story alongside some of our nation’s most celebrated authors, including best-selling writer Fleur Ferris, acclaimed Tasmanian author Meg Bignell, award-winning crime writer and playwright Marg Hickey and historical fiction master Jock Serong.

Held across three days from October 16 to 18, the festival will take place in a mix of venues, and our historic wharf and paddlesteamers.

Oz rock legends

LEGENDS OF OZ WILL PERFORM AT RICH RIVER GOLF CLUB ON SATURDAY, JUNE 27 FROM 8.30PM TO 11.30PM, WITH FREE ENTRY.

The eight-piece band showcases iconic Australian music spanning from the 1970s to the present day.

Legends of OZ lead singer Paul Vitullo, a Cobram local, leads the group alongside Scott Solimo on guitar and vocals, Amanda Baxter and Antonia Maher on vocals, Marc Paola on guitar, Alistair Robertson on bass, Jake Molinaro on drums, and Damian Montalto on keyboards and vocals.

“It is both a band and a show,” Paul said.

“We highlight some of the best of the best Australian acts that are out there.”

The three-hour performance covers a diverse range of Australian music.

“We don’t get time to play everything, but we try and tap into as many of the Australian iconic songs that we possibly can,” Paul said.

“It depends on the venue, but we will do stuff from AC/DC, right through to the Baby Animals, through to Farnham, through to Hoodoo Gurus, Hunters and Collectors.”

Paul, who has been performing for 40 years, developed the concept to showcase classic Australian hits.

“I always thought that I’d love to highlight, performing Australian music and touching on a little bit of modern, but more so classic bands, and dating back even to some of the ’70s music,” he said.

“My favourite song to perform is probably You’re the Voice.

“It is a big one for crowd involvement.

“We just really can’t wait because last time we performed at Rich River, it was an absolutely massive night, and we really appreciated the people that came along.

“So, we hope to see everyone back again.”

Indigenous men’s art takes centre stage

A POWERFUL EXHIBITION

CELEBRATING INDIGENOUS MEN’S ART AND TRADITIONS WILL OPEN AT THE FOUNDRY ARTS SPACE FROM FRIDAY, JULY 10 TO SUNDAY, JULY 12, AS PART OF NAIDOC WEEK CELEBRATIONS.

“There will be a photographic exhibition and some other pieces from what we like to call our heroes, our elders, our old people.”

Community involvement forms a central part of the exhibition, with local male artists contributing works in various mediums.

Yorta Yorta woman Vicki Walker, who has been organising NAIDOC Week exhibitions at The Foundry for 15 years, said the 2026 showcase would focus exclusively on men.

“In 2025, we did all women, so this year we are doing all the men, with an exhibition called Our heroes, way more than 50 years deadly,” Aunty Vicki Walker said.

“We think our men, going back, have been deadly for way longer than that.

“We are going to have a wall of fame, which are pieces that aren’t for sale about our athletes, our musicians, our artists, our shearers that have come from Yorta Yorta country.

“Anyone who is part of the community will be allowed to submit work,” Aunty Vicki said.

“We will reach out to other Yorta Yorta artists who don’t live on country anymore, but are always part of country.”

Students from St Joseph’s College will also participate through workshops and performances, with one student performing on the Yidaki during the opening night.

“I do a bit of work with St Joseph’s College and I’m going to be doing some art with the male students in the next few weeks,” she said.

“That will include some fabulous framed photographic landscapes from one of the students in particular, who is phenomenal at photography.

“Then there will be other students that I am doing workshops with making beautiful little possum skin pieces that will be burnt and framed for sale on the night as well.”

The opening night on Friday, July 10 at 6pm will feature traditional food including kangaroo, wattleseed, Davidson plum, and lemon myrtle, with everyone welcome to attend.

Winter music on the Murray

THE ECHUCA-MOAMA WINTER BLUES FESTIVAL WILL RETURN FROM JULY 23 TO 26, BRINGING FOUR DAYS OF BLUES AND ROOTS MUSIC TO THE BANKS OF THE MURRAY RIVER.

The free festival will feature more than 20 venues across the twin towns, offering a family-friendly celebration of music and community spirit.

The festival transforms Echuca-Moama into a music-filled winter escape, with live performances spilling across the riverfront from morning until late.

The all-inclusive family space will run on Saturday and Sunday, with free kids’ activities and music in an alcohol-free setting at Hopwood Gardens.

Because admission is free, audiences can discover incredible artists from around the country without the barrier of ticket prices.

Organisers have announced the second round of artists for 2026, featuring Victorian roots icon Jeff Lang teaming up with Backsliders’ Dom Turner on a new trio project.

The lineup also includes 14-year-old guitar prodigy LilG, alongside long-time Echuca favourites The McNaMarr Project, Phil Para, and Jimi Hocking’s Blues Machine.

Singer-songwriter Cass Eager, who will make her eighth festival appearance, first performed at Winter Blues in 2013.

“I just love the festival,” Cass said.

“So many festivals are summer festivals, they are sunshine, boots in the grass, dancing in the sun, but the winter blues festival has its own personality.

“The riverboats and the setting and how the whole town opens itself up to the festival, it is so glorious.

“It is a co-ordinated effort by the whole town to bring it alive; you hear music playing in the streets, in the venues, and it is wonderful.”

Cass said there were too many musicians to pick favourites, but was looking forward to seeing the two Jesses, Jesse Valach and Jesse Redwing, Oscar Ladell and Sweet Felicia.

Blues-roots musician Geoff Achison described it as “one of the most adored festivals that I have ever been a part of”.

“From the second one festival has wrapped up on Sunday night, people I run into in Echuca are ‘So, you coming back next year?’,” he said.

Geoff will bring The Soul Diggers this year and also perform a solo acoustic show, hopefully in the library.

“It can be a dreary sort of winter sometimes, so to get the chance to pop up to Echuca and spend those few days on the river, in that beautiful town, with lots of music happening, it is an absolute highlight,” he said.

Geoff thought that if you had the opportunity, you should see Kathleen Halloran, Ray Beadle, Cam Walter and Eddie and the Exciters.

Running for a cause

FUNDRAISING FOR A GOOD CAUSE IS AT THE FOREFRONT OF THE ANNUAL RUN ECHUCA MOAMA EVENT.

The Community Living and Respite Services event will this year be held on August 2.

Entrants can challenge themselves with the 21.1km, 10km, or 5km courses.

Junior bolts over 800m or 400m will also be returning for another year to cater to younger runners.

A highlight introduced last year, is the opportunity to stride across the old Echuca Moama Bridge, with the roadway closed to the public during the event.

CLRS CEO Leah Taffe said her team was ready to open the bridge again, knowing what to expect after its first time on the course last year.

“We’re really excited to have our second year having the old bridge open and having people running over that,” she said.

“Looking forward to being a little more relaxed about that happening this year than we were last year.”

The Murray also takes centre stage during the event as runners cross the border twice and travel through Echuca’s historic port district alongside the river.

Last year, 799 entrants took on the courses, and raised $55,000 for Community Living and Respite Services’ Opening Doors Project.

The project’s goal is to construct purpose-built homes for people with disability that require 24hour support.

The first project opened in 2014, and has so far delivered three homes and 12 units, providing housing for 22 individuals.

Two Moama caravan parks only metres from Run Echuca Moama start line, Riverside Holiday Park and BIG4 Moama Holiday Park, are offering discounted stays for event participants.

Moama Art Gallery – Bunyma to open

THE BRIDGE ART PROJECT INC IS A COMMUNITY GROUP THAT HAS BEEN ACTIVE SINCE 2010.

And its primary objective, the creation of an art gallery in Moama, is about to be achieved.

After years and multiple grant applications, it’ll be worth the wait.

The 74 Meninya St site has seen many phases, firstly the acquisition of a partly constructed home which was never finished.

Next, the painting of the house by artist Ash Keating, who made it a colourful landmark, before its spectacular demolition.

Modular company PreBuilt, began construction of the gallery at its Kilsyth factory in late 2025.

The landing of the 11 modules, using a 250-tonne crane, over two nights in early April was a spectacular event.

name for the gallery which was adopted by the committee, Moama Art Gallery – Bunyma.

The word bunyma means to make or create, which perfectly matches the aspirations for the gallery.

The building includes indoor and outdoor event spaces, a workshop, gift store, a large community room, two galleries and a café.

The art will feature contemporary art, across rivers, across cultures, across history.

During April, plastering, painting, electrical and mechanical fit out, and decking were completed, and the front canopy was put up.

Further finishing and landscaping works occurred in May and June.

The final chapter, the opening of the doors, will in July this year.

Classic trucks roll into Echuca

THE AMERICAN IRON ECHUCA TRUCK DISPLAY WILL RETURN TO ROTARY PARK ECHUCA FOR THE 17TH YEAR ON THE WEEKEND OF SEPTEMBER 12 AND 13.

American Truck Historical Society Australian Chapter president Tony Murphy said the Echuca truck display was the group’s main show for the year.

“The club’s main aim is to preserve the past for the future, that’s our motto,” Mr Murphy said.

“All these old transport vehicles and trucks are a part of Australian history.

“Because if we didn’t have the trucks, there would be nothing in the shops.

“Most of the members have club-registered trucks over 25 years old.

“We have trucks that date back as far as the early 1900s, and this Echuca display gives everybody a chance, when the sun starts coming out again, to come out and display their rigs.”

A vast range of trucks will be on display, not just American brands, even though the event is called American Iron, with 200 to 250 trucks expected.

“The theme of this year’s event is kids’ toys,

otherwise known as Kenworths,” Mr Murphy said.

“Then there are also English trucks like Bedfords and Commer, and different trucks on display.

“There are various trucks, from light utilities to heavy trucks and road train-rated trucks.

“Several classic cars will be displayed, with the local car club bringing cars along.”

Before the display opens to the public, the American Truck Historical Society Australian Chapter will gather for drinks and food for members and their families on Friday night.

Anyone who drives up to the gate in a rig to be displayed at the American Iron Echuca Truck Display can enter for free, along with their passengers.

Tickets will be available for purchase at the gate for a day or the weekend for adults, with kids under 16 free.

Ag show seeks volunteers for 150th anniversary

THE ECHUCA MOAMA AGRICULTURAL SHOW SOCIETY IS CALLING FOR COMMUNITY SUPPORT AND VOLUNTEERS AS IT PREPARES TO CELEBRATE A REMARKABLE MILESTONE.

The 150th Echuca Moama Agricultural Show will take place on November 7 and 8, marking 150 years of continuous operation.

Echuca Moama Agricultural Show Society secretary Anthea Mathers said the committee was eager to make this a significant celebration.

“It is a really amazing milestone to still be having an event 150 years on from when it started,” she said.

“There are not too many events that are still in operation that started 150 years ago in our local community.”

The society is seeking volunteers to help across the weekend, including assistance at gates, in the office and in the pavilion.

“There are a lot of elements that we require help with, including general volunteers across that weekend, being at the gates, helping patrons with where to go and what to do, in the office, recording information and also in the pavilion,” Anthea said.

A special focus for the anniversary celebration will be historical displays showcasing the show’s evolution.

The committee is working closely with the Echuca Moama Historical Society to create exhibitions both at the historical society and at the show itself. The society is appealing for community members to loan historical agricultural machinery and show memorabilia.

“We hope for it to be a celebration through the ages and really have a look and see how things have changed in agriculture and also at a show level, over the course of 150 years,” Anthea said.

“Anyone who may have some historical agricultural machinery at home or stored away that might like to display it across the weekend would be warmly welcome.”

Items such as show-winning artwork, certificates, sashes, photos and trophies from past events are particularly sought-after.

The show organisers are also working to revive the livestock component, particularly the sheep section.

“We really want to revive the sheep side of the livestock component of the show, so if there is anyone interested in co-ordinating that, or helping with the showing of cattle, we would love to hear from them,” she said.

The society is particularly encouraging younger people to participate, including through the Young Ambassadors program.

“The Echuca Moama Agriculture Show is one of those few events that actually caters for people from four right through to 104,” Anthea said.

“There is something for everyone in the community.”

One of those author talks is local author and mother Benita Bensch discussing motherhood, identity, finding yourself and exploring ‘matrescence’, the process of becoming a mother and how it affects a woman’s sense of self.

Benita’s new book Seen Again, offers guidance for modern mothers feeling lost and disconnected from their former selves.

“I am a mother of four,” Benita said.

“My husband and I are farmers north of Moama where we have a cropping enterprise.

“I’m involved in our farm business, and I also work as a coach who works with mums and farming families.

“I do lots of different things, including writing, speaking, running events and workshops, which all centre around supporting mothers to feel seen and to reconnect with who they are after having children.”

Benita’s work stems from personal experience.

“About four years into my motherhood journey, I hit what I call the black hole, where I felt like I was invisible and like I’d lost myself,” she said.

“Matrescence is the emotional, psychological, physical, spiritual and social transition of becoming a mother.

“My book explores that profound change.

“Helping people to know and love the new version of themselves, rather than fighting to get back to this pre-motherhood self that we grieve for.”

One of those music acts is the Kings of Country Rock Tour bringing the sounds of the United States’ country rock icons to the town over winter.

The two-hour stage spectacular celebrates the timeless classics of the Eagles and Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Co-founder, vocalist and drummer Pete Timms said the show featured “the very best of the Eagles and Creedence Clearwater Revival together in one big show”.

“They were all part of that West Coast sound of the late 1960s into the 70s,” he said.

The first half takes audiences through Eagles’ masterpieces, including Take It Easy, Hotel California and Desperado.

Part two features Creedence Clearwater Revival anthems like Proud Mary, Bad Moon Rising and Have You Ever Seen The Rain.

“There are too many favourite songs to pick, but out of the Eagles, it would have to be Desperado or Hotel California,” Pete said.

“Anything from Creedence will get the audience up on their feet, so Proud Mary, Bad Moon Rising, and Down on the Corner.”

Pete emphasised the show’s authenticity.

“What we deliver is all of the songs, all of those great platinum hits, the absolute audience favourites, 100 per cent live,” he said.

“Six-part harmonies, no backing tracks, real live music.”

Dive into swim challenge

THE ECHUCA WAR MEMORIAL AQUATIC CENTRE INVITES SWIMMERS OF ALL AGES AND ABILITIES TO PARTICIPATE IN THE 2026 WINTER SWIM CHALLENGE, ENCOURAGING LOCALS TO STAY ACTIVE DURING THE COOLER MONTHS.

The challenge, also known as “Swim the Murray”, will run through June and July, allowing participants to virtually swim the distance between Echuca and Torrumbarry along the Murray River — about 100 kilometres within the Campaspe Shire boundaries.

Campaspe Shire Council aquatic facilities coordinator Marcus Maher said the initiative helped maintain swimming motivation during winter.

“It’s about maintaining and improving people’s health and wellbeing during the winter months,” he said.

“The Winter Swim Challenge is about encouraging people to come in and swim, having their own goals and determination.

“It could be pushing an extra 10 laps out of your regular swim or upping the number of times a week you swim from even once a week to twice.

“It’s not about who swims the furthest; it is about

people swimming regularly.”

The 2025 challenge saw impressive participation, with 50 swimmers involved, and three participants achieving the 100km mark within two months.

In 2026, the learn-to-swim kids can participate with swims outside of their lesson times being included if they like.

Progress is tracked on a map displayed in the pool hall, with swimmers recording their laps on manual sheets at reception.

At the end of the swim challenge, participants who have visited the aquatic centre and have swum the Murray go into a draw for prizes, including something for the person who swims the furthest.

ESCAPE STUDIOS HAS OPENED IN ECHUCA, OFFERING IMMERSIVE ESCAPE-ROOM EXPERIENCES, MURDER-MYSTERY NIGHTS, PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY AND CREATIVE ART OPPORTUNITIES FOR GROUPS LOOKING FOR SOMETHING BEYOND THE ORDINARY.

Located at Storage 7A, Darling Works, 11-19 Darling St, the venue combines cinematic puzzlesolving adventures with photography and creative experiences in one unique entertainment space.

Escape Studios owner Brett Hopson explained the vision behind the business.

“We had the studio space, and we were one day thinking about different ideas, and realised an escape room was something the town needed,” he said.

The flagship experience, Through the Looking Glass, takes participants through a fractured Wonderland across three immersive themed rooms.

“You start in the Time Room, uncover clues, and then flow into the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party,” Brett said.

“Currently, we also offer a live interaction add-on in the Mad Hatter’s room.

“The Mad Hatter is there to help, hinder and add atmosphere; he really brings the game to life.”

The experience concludes in the Queen’s Throne Room, with the full adventure running for about one hour for groups of four to six players.

Each room has been designed with its own distinct atmosphere.

“The Time Room is quite dark and mostly lit with blue LEDs,” Brett said.

“There are pocket watches hanging from the roof, ticking clocks everywhere and Chesterfield lounges that make it feel like another world.”

The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party room features artificial-

grass flooring and a four-metre mural filled with giant chess pieces and painted roses.

Alongside the escape rooms, the venue also hosts immersive murder mystery nights for 12 to 24 people in a 1920s manor-style setting.

“Guests receive their character about a week before the event and are encouraged to come dressed in character,” Brett said.

“They don’t get every detail straight away, but enough to create a personality and style around the role.”

Tickets to the murder mystery nights include pizza and a can of soft drink, because even in a house full of secrets, guests still need to keep their energy up.

Escape Studios also offers professional photography services and plans to expand its creative art workshops and experiences in the future.

Future escape-room plans include a Henry Hopwood-inspired experience featuring hidden tunnels and multiple stages of gameplay.

“We are planning a room based around Henry Hopwood’s booking office,” Brett said.

“There will be multiple stages and an escape through a hidden tunnel.”

DISCOVER CAMPASPE’S ART COLLECTION WITH FRESH CONTEMPORARY PERSPECTIVES

Campaspe Shire Council will showcase over 20 works from its extensive art collection alongside new pieces by contemporary artists in an exhibition running from July 1 to September 1 at Kyabram Town Hall Gallery.

The council’s collection comprises more than 300 pieces accumulated over many years through gifts, donations and purchases.

“It is a pretty comprehensive collection, featuring contemporary paintings, ceramics, First Nations paintings, prints and sculptures,” curator and artist Ellen Lee said.

“There are bushland scenes and other paintings that depict our land.

“For this exhibition, we are using over 20 works from the collection, and they are being paired with new works that are being created by current artists in and around the shire.

“It is presenting a new perspective on works from the collection, an established collection.”

Up to eight artists are involved in creating responses to the historical pieces.

“I have deliberately tried to pair artists with different

mediums and approaches,” Ellen said.

“I have a ceramist who is responding to still life paintings and pastel works.

“There is an artist who is responding to a First Nation ceramic work with really bold, vibrant, colourful finger painting works.

“I am really loving that contrast of responses and being a little bit playful, that different approach to make things a little bit fresh, a little bit fun.”

Ellen highlighted several standout pieces, including Diana Cooper’s untitled magpie sculptures and David Frazer’s Lonely Boy III print, which she will personally respond to.

The exhibition also features David McCubbin’s walking maps of Lockington, Tongala, Stanhope, Rushworth and Rochester.

“We have an artist who is working with them, and they represent towns around the shire, the landmarks,” Ellen said.

“I think they are going to be a real interest to people if they come to see the collection.”

The exhibition will be held at Kyabram Town Hall Gallery, 199 Allan St, Kyabram.

Ky Club, new chef, new menu

KYABRAM CLUB’S NEW CHEF BRINGS GLOBAL FLAIR TO LOCAL MENU

Kyabram Club head chef Richard Pattenden brings two decades of international culinary experience to his new role, having worked in acclaimed restaurants across Australia, France and Ireland.

“I’m from Sydney originally and I have been cooking for about 20 years now,” Richard said.

“I did my apprenticeship with two years at Kingsley’s Australian Steakhouse, then two years at Bistro Paris, under chef Clement Chauvin.”

His culinary journey took him across continents, with a year in France before moving to Canberra’s Sage Restaurant.

He later worked in Ireland at a two-Michelin-star restaurant, and planned to return.

However, this didn’t happen due to visa complications.

Instead, Richard found work closer to what would become his home, working in Moama and Echuca, before his current appointment.

“When the chance came up to become the head chef at the Kyabram Club, being that bit closer to home and a pretty good environment, I jumped at the chance and I’m really enjoying it,” Richard said.

The kitchen’s multicultural team has become a source of inspiration and learning.

“We have Chinese-trained chefs, Indian, Nepalese and Sri Lankan chefs,” Richard said.

“They are showing me things which are traditional and original, ingredients and spices that you may not find in the supermarket.”

This diversity particularly shines through in the club’s Monday curry night.

Currently, Richard’s favourite menu item is the butter chicken, prepared by an Indian chef using traditional methods.

“The chef who makes the butter chicken, she is from

India and it is pretty good learning authentic Indian from her,” he said.

“It is like a two- or three-day process to make the butter chicken, we are not being lazy.”

Richard is also implementing improvements for dietary requirements.

“We are looking at getting a couple of extra fryers, so we can be 100 per cent gluten free and be able to give a bit more security to guests who are coeliac,” he said.

Kyabram Club bistro is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week, with Monday curry night, Tuesday steak night, Wednesday ribs and wings and Thursday members’ $20 parmie.

Campaspe Shire Mayor Daniel Mackrell said the mural trail offered a great reason for people to visit the town.

“Rochester has become a significant destination for public art, and the Mural Trail showcases the incredible creativity and stories embedded within our community,” Cr Mackrell said.

The launch of the map coincided with the 2026 Rochester Mural Festival, with the festival being

the perfect time to release the map and encourage people to explore all 22 mural sites.

The Rochester Mural Festival runs each March, with artists painting murals on a theme in Mural Park on Moore St, Rochester.

Increased visitation from the festival and the coinciding trail, not only boosts local businesses but also strengthens the community’s pride in the town.

The new map highlights each artwork location, offering an easy self-guided experience for families, art lovers and tourists.

DJ Angelo, who will be performing at Rock by the River, explained the event’s musical focus.

“It is a combination of rock and roll, old school rock and roll, ’50s mainly, early ’60s,” he said. The festival caters to dancers of all abilities.

“We have started introducing some partner and line dancing for couples that still want to keep active but can’t rock and roll any more, because of aches and pains,” DJ Angelo said.

DJ Angelo emphasises his diverse musical approach.

“I’m not like most DJs, who keep playing the same thing all the time,” he said.

“I like to change my music regularly.

“I also dance, so I know what people dance to, what beat is needed.

“If the dancefloor is empty and you want to get people up, songs like High Class Lady (The

Lennerockers), Matchbox (Carl Perkins), Burning Love by Elvis, all those really thumpy songs get them going.”

Dance classes will run on Saturday and Sunday, which attendees can book to take part in at cluBarham reception.

The event attracts participants from across Victoria and NSW, with DJ Angelo observing that “rock and rollers will travel if there is a good festival going on”.

“I’ve never seen anybody go to a festival or a dance and sit there all night without getting a dance,” he said.

“You’ve got to be comfortable on the dance floor, and you don’t want to be stepping on somebody’s toes with a heel.

The facility features three sites on the grassed area next to the Picola Public Hall.

Moira Shire Council chair administrator Graeme Emonson recently inspected the site alongside Friends of Picola Public Hall member Jeanette Holland and Nathalia Barmah Business and Tourism chair Roland Huber.

“This is a great new accommodation option for visitors to our region,” Dr Emonson said.

“RV-friendly locations are a drawcard for travellers, and we hope the new Picola site will encourage visitors to stay a while and enjoy everything Moira Shire has to offer.”

Dr Emonson believes the facility “will provide a welcome boost for local tourism”.

Ms Holland emphasised the site’s importance in attracting visitors to Picola.

“We want people to visit our town, visit our hotel, visit our silo art, visit our park and learn about our heritage,” she said.

“This will give people an opportunity to stop here, when before they have just driven through.

“We hope they’ll stay longer.

“If we can achieve that, it’s good for the town.”

Mr Huber described the RV site as exciting for Picola.

“It’s part of supporting local businesses and giving

the opportunity for locals to talk to visitors and share their experiences,” he said.

“If we can get people to spend at least a couple of days here, they can go to the pub and meet some locals and hear their stories and life experiences.”

Mr Huber hopes visitors will “go home and tell their friends that we’re a friendly shire”.

CAMPASPE MINIATURE RAILWAY INC IS SEEKING VOLUNTEERS TO SERVE AS TRAIN DRIVERS, ENGINEERS, TICKET INSPECTORS, MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL AND SIGNALLERS.

The railway operates from Rotary Park and has been running for about 40 years.

Campaspe Miniature Railway Inc president Colin McConnell has been involved with the miniature railway for over 25 years and president for eight years.

“I got involved because I wanted to build a steam traction engine, and I needed to be a member of a miniature steam club,” Colin said.

“The only one in the area was the miniature railway, so that is how I became involved.

“Basically, for the last 100 years, people have been making little models of things, scaled-down models, and they were looking for somewhere to run them.

“So, these little model miniature railways popped up around the country.”

The railway operates passenger-carrying trains on the first Sunday of each month from March to December, running from 10am to 3pm.

The trains include steam-operated locomotives, petrol engines that resemble diesel-electric modern trains, and battery-powered models.

Children six and under must be accompanied by an adult, and tickets can be purchased from the ticket office.

Rochester GrainCorp silos are painted by Jimmy Dvate, dedicated to local flora and fauna with mural’s of the threatened azure kingfisher, squirrel glider and large duck-billed platypus.

There are over 50 pieces of public art spread throughout the town including a mural park in Moore St and a mural featuring former Rochester local and homicide detective Ron Iddles.

Through its museum and collections, the Rochester Historical and Pioneer Society offers valuable educational opportunities for visitors.

The town’s main attraction is Fonterra, the big cheese factory that has a mural made up of 11,000 photos of the community.

Rushworth

Wander the wide high street, reading the ‘Walk through time’ plaques to learn about the gold rush era that once was. Visit the Rushworth Museum or the Ironbark forests on the edge of town.

The Rushworth Easter Heritage Festival is held every Easter Saturday. Rushworth market is along the main street, the third Saturday of each month.

Visit the site of the former township and gold mine, Whroo and Balaclava Mines in the surrounding state forest.

Colbinabbin

Travel to Colbinabbin to see one of the most wonderful pieces of silo art imaginable with five privately owned silos painted by artist Tim Bowtell. The silos depict significant events in the history of Colbinabbin including paintings of the early farmers’ picnics, transporting grain to and from the Colbinabbin silos, the role of the CFA and channel building to the town, and the massive tractor pull from the 1980s.

Barmah

Barmah National Park has the largest red gum forest in the world. Enjoy the Barmah Lakes Loop track, which begins and ends at the Dharnya Centre. The centre was established with the help of the local Aboriginal community to teach visitors about the region’s ecology, culture and history.
