AN EVENT WORTH GETTING STEAMED UP ABOUT The 56th annual Steam Rally Echuca-Moama on June 8–9 will feature more than 300 exhibits and is the major fundraiser for the local Rotary Club IT’S full steam ahead for Echuca-Moama Rotary Club’s major fundraising event. The 56th annual Steam Rally Echuca-Moama on June 8–9 is gearing up to be a huge weekend. It will showcase more than 300 exhibits of working yesteryear and steam engines valued at more than $500,000 each. They will range from small to large model steam engines, model steam rail engines, working draught horses, military equipment, radio equipment, vintage tractors, trucks and cars. One of the the oldest exhibits is an 1880 Shand Mason horse-drawn steam fire engine. It will be displayed by the Fire Services Museum, East Melbourne, and used to put out the fire during the ‘Burning Down of the Dunny’ on the Sunday afternoon. This year’s program has also added the interest and excitement of a an original Fairground 46 key organ. The event will also include working blacksmiths, shearing and camp cooking, while families will be able to enjoy face painting, jumping castles, comfort out zone for parents, colouring competition, horseshoe toss, animal nursery and buskers. Steam Rally secretary Betty McCoomb said the event offered a chance to glimpse into the past. “You can watch the old-style shearing, draught 6

horses loading a log buggy, the big steam engines lumber around the arena, blacksmiths working, sleeper cutting and haymaking and ride on the miniature steam rail engines,” she said. “There is a bigger number of steam engines on display, a children’s precinct, large working horse display, grand parade on both days, the fairground organ and a number of exhibits that have not previously attended the rally before.” The rally usually attracts about 5000 people but organisers are hoping more locals will attend the 56th celebration. “We are confident this year’s rally will be of interest to all age groups with a number of new and exciting attractions,” Betty said. “If last year’s event is anything to go by, we know this fantastic weekend will be bigger and better than ever before with a list of special, onetime only experiences being held at the event.” Profits from the event will be donated to notfor-profit causes and organisations around the district. Day passes for adults are $22, $7 for children, $17 for concession, pensioners, seniors and disability card holders while a family day pass is $50. Both days start at 9 am and finish at 4.30 pm at Echuca’s Rotary Community Park. For information, visit echucasteamrally.com.au.

WINTER BRINGS THE BIG FREEZE TO TOWN We’ve laughed at celebrities in Melbourne — in some bizarre costumes — voluntarily slide into a pool of ice water. On June 10 the laugh goes local when Echuca-Moama hosts its inaugural Big Freeze for MND FORGET the chill pill and try your hand at the Big Freeze — it’s coming to Echuca-Moama on June 10. The inaugural event will see several local personalities sliding into a giant pool of ice water, all in the name of raising funds for Fight MND — Australia’s leading independent foundation funding research into a cure for Motor Neuron Disease. “A number of sliders are raising $1000 each and will brave the icy plunge on the day,

supported by family, friends and the local community,” organiser Naomi Beasley said. “The person who raises the most money will win the title of King or Queen of Echuca-Moama Big Freeze.” Naomi said the family fun day, held on the Queen’s birthday public holiday at Moama Recreation Reserve, promised to have entertainment for all ages. “Along with the big slide, there’ll be a football clinic, market stalls, a big screen broadcasting the Collingwood versus Melbourne AFL game live, as well as the MCG Big Freeze,” she said. Organisers hope to raise $30,000 from the event. “The fight against MND is vital,” Naomi said. “Funds raised by the Big Freeze EchucaMoama will go directly to the top research facilities in Australia to help increase understanding of MND, develop treatments, and eventually find a cure. “We are proud to launch this event in EchucaMoama, bringing together the community, uniting with a shared objective to fight the beast that is MND.” For details of individual participants and their progress, go to https://freezemndechucamoama.blackbaud-sites.com/ WHAT’S ON Winter 2019

SIXTY PERFORMERS WILL ROCK OUR WINTER BLUES FESTIVAL Echuca will host one of its biggest events from July 25–28 when the 20th Winter Blues Festival takes centre stage Echuca’s Winter Blues Festival is gearing up for its biggest event yet as it turns 20 this year. More than 20,000 people are expected to flock to the four-day festival on July 25–28, which will see 60 blues and roots performers from around south-east Australia playing across 25 stages all around Echuca. Festival organiser Peter Williams said the festival was one of the two biggest events on the Echuca-Moama calendar. “In 1999 the original group that came up with the idea of a little Sunday afternoon blues music festival could not have imagined that it would develop into what it is today,” he said. “The last weekend in July in 1998 was one of the quietest 16 WHAT'S ON Winter 2019

weekends for business in town each year and accommodation houses thought 20 per cent occupancy on Saturday night was pretty good. “Now they get three and four days of full house signs.” Mr Williams said the original model was “shared risk shared benefit”. “Participating venues took the risk paying for the artists playing in their venues and obviously hoped that it would a good benefit to them as well,” he said. “This model has proved to be a winner as it makes the Winter Blues Festival the event that returns the greatest benefit back into the community. “The free festival makes it extremely rare and ensures people of all ages and incomes can attend. It also builds the atmosphere of being out on the street strolling from venue to venue amongst a very happy crowd of patrons. “Of course being free means that we do not

attract the big international, acts but you do get to see many of the best Australian blues musicians in one easy to get around location and you also get to see many of the new and upcoming acts.” The festival is run by a committee of volunteers, so it is a genuine Echuca-Moama community run event. A range of other activities are also run before and through the festival. They include the guitar painting competition — attracting more than 100 entries — the Winter Blues Songwriters Studio involving about 40 local musicians aged between 15 and 25, and an intensive two-day workshop with leading blues musicians and a performance on the Monday night. There is also a kids fun space on the Sunday in Hopwood Gardens, while that night sees the Wrap Party. The annual fundraiser is the only paid event and it will be held at Radcliffes with a variety of the artists from the four days performing and jamming together. Tourists are encouraged to book their accommodation early as the weekend is a sellout.

JOHNNO’S RUN STILL RUNNING SMOOTHLY With almost $300,000 raised — and another $80,000–$100,000 expected this year — the supporters behind Johnno’s Run are making every kilometre count in the countdown to this year’s Run Melbourne on July 28 MORE than 200 participants are expected to pound the pavement for this year’s Johnno’s Run on July 28. An amazing achievement considering the event started five years ago with just 15 runners. More than $280,000 has been raised in that time, much of which has gone to Community Living and Respite Services’ Opening Doors projects around the twin towns. This year, $77,435 has already been raised for the Opening Doors Project in Moama at CLRS’ 13th Annual Fundraising Dinner. CLRS’ Dave Callanan said the Run Melbourne event on July 28 was expected to raise another $70,000. “So far in 2019 there has been $18,969 raised already,” he said. 22 WHAT'S ON Winter 2019

“This amount is fantastic, but we’re not going to rest on our laurels.” Runners have the chance to enter a 5 km or 10 km event or a half marathon. Everyone who joins the Johnno’s Run team will receive free registration, free Johnno’s Run top to wear on the day, the opportunity to join free community training sessions every Monday night — and free fundraising tips. “As it is a fundraising event, all of the above is based on a minimum of $250 raised per adult. Kids are free with a participating adult,” Dave said. “There are a variety of fundraising activities planned that are open to the wider community.” CLRS chief executive Suzanna Barry thanked sponsors and contributors who have been supporting the project from the start, and the

new supporters who have come on board. “These projects are life-changing for people, and supporters can see they are making a real difference,” Ms Barry said. “You can watch these projects being built and be proud it’s as a result of your fundraising — the houses and units will be there for a long time to come, helping people live independently.” This year’s Opening Doors Project is financing a new house and two units in Maiden St, Moama, which Dave said would hopefully be built by the end of the year. “The house will be a permanent home

for three people with disability and will also provide accommodation for two others who are transitioning into independent living,” he said. “The project focuses on increasing independence and community inclusion. Design features of the house and units will enable the use of assistive technology to provide residents with more control over their home environment.” Suzanna encouraged people to get on board with their fundraising and recruit more people to take part in Run Melbourne. “You can walk it, you can run — really everyone can take part in it,” she said. Tourism is a major industry for Echuca-

Moama, bringing in $1 million day, or $395 million a year, on average into the region. And the tourist highlight for winter is undoubtedly the Winter Blues Music Festival. “Music ebbs into every nook and cranny right across the twin towns and locals and visitors alike brush shoulders as they mingle in and around the wonderful spaces in the historic port precinct,” Ms McKenzie said. “Good food, wine and the smell of redgum and the glowing red coals of the woodfire burners or barbecues are dotted along the street. “Echuca-Moama is a place to wind down, a bit

of a haven where one can dream away the hours overlooking the river or from the vantage point of a paddlesteamer, houseboat or from the wharf or a winery. “It’s a great place to rekindle the fire for a few days or even to take a longer break. “Local produce, local wines, craft beers and now gin can be found in the cafes, clubs and historic pubs which all add to having that time out and experience with friends and family.” So rather than staying inside this winter, head outdoors and enjoy all Echuca-Moama has to offer. DOLLS from all eras will line the tables at the Echuca-Moama Doll Show and Competition on July 27–28. Hundreds of people are expected through the doors at the Anglican Church hall to see the display of about 40 dolls — the winners of Friday’s competition. Categories range from best antique and modern reproductions to best cloth doll, re-borns and figurines. Echuca-Moama Doll Club’s Kath Walsh said she hoped to get a good crowd at the 19th annual show. “It donates back to the community and keeps the interest alive and gives Echuca another event,” she said. “It’s a cheap entry and you can’t go wrong by just having a look. “There are a lot of kids around who like to look at the dolls. It’s something different.” Traders will also have antique and modern dolls and accessories, laces, craft supplies and teddies for sale. Doll owners also have the opportunity to bring their own treasured pieces along to the display, where any problems they have can be diagnosed by the doll doctor on call for the day. This year, money raised by the show will go towards Moama Echuca Botanic Gardens. The doll show will be held at the Anglican Church hall, High St, from 9.30 am to 4 pm. OPEN YOUR EYES TO NEW ART STYLES Alton Gallery’s latest exhibition includes some radical new mediums as artists search for a new look. It runs until July 27 THE Eyes Wide Open exhibition is inspired by the idea that art is all around us, if only we have eyes to see it. Even in the smallest and most insignificant objects. Ten artists from ArtLife, Deniliquin’s newest art group, will exhibit about 60 of their works, ranging from photography, traditional landscapes, flora and fauna studies and still life, to modern “explosions of colour” with experimental materials and techniques using rubbing alcohol and yupo paper. Echuca-Moama Artists’ Barbara Pavone encouraged locals and visitors to support the arts. “Art reflects the values of a community,” she said. “It can communicate social, philosophical, political and spiritual ideas. It allows individuals 36 WHAT'S ON Winter 2019

and groups to express what they feel about many aspects of life. “It can express beauty, happiness, sadness, ugliness, anger, fear, discontent, hope, be amusing and thought provoking. “It can be an escape from reality, or therapeutic. It can be a recording of history, such as the silo paintings in small Victorian towns, or it can be just the sheer joy of working with the materials.” She said it was important the creative processes of the arts be allowed to flourish in an environment free from restraint and ridicule. “When people value and support the arts, it is an indication of the health of the collective psyche of their community.” The free exhibition opens in the Alton Gallery on Saturday, June 1, and continues to July 27. ECHUCA-MOAMA Arts Initiative (EMAI) has a range of exhibitions at The Foundry Arts Space during winter. From June 7–26, well-established local artists John Stevens and Elly Wegener will collaborate to bring you an exhibition to remember. Aboriginal arts and culture will be celebrated between June 28 and July 21 with a NAIDOC exhibition. From July 24 to August 2, EMAI artists will showcase their work at the members exhibition. Trash Puppies will then feature at The Foundry from August 3–4. Meanwhile, EMAI is planning to screen films at the Paramount as part of the St Kilda Film Festival in June. EMAI is a not-for-profit community

organisation that aims to raise the profile of arts and culture in the Echuca Moama region. Located in the heart of the historic Port of Echuca precinct, on the banks of the Murray River, The Foundry Arts Space is a gallery, workshop and performance venue, housed in the former Freeman’s Foundry. This historic, but contemporary building stands on the site of the original Henry Hopwood’s Store, one of the first buildings in Echuca. The building, renovated during 2015, is filled with natural light and has a contemporary, industrial vibe. Tickets are selling fast so don’t wait to get yours PREPARATIONS are gearing up for the third Lockington Country Music Festival which continues to attract capacity crowds each year. Launched by Big River Entertainment in 2017 as part of its Awareness of Rural Towns project, the festival was originally hosted by Echuca Workers Club, then moved to Moama RSL Club for three years. “The aim is to attract people to rural towns by organising events that appeal to the over 40s age group with a mix of country and rock ’n roll music along with a healthy dash of comedy,” Big River Entertainment’s Roz Giles said. “The event is entirely indoors so bad weather is not an issue. The picturesque hall boasts a wonderful dance floor or folks can just sit back, relax and enjoy the entertainment.”

And everyone is invited to have a crack at cooking up a storm using their own ingredients and recipes TORRUMBARRY Community Club’s Camp Oven Cook Off will see participants use fires in the hotel’s beer garden to cook a meal with their own ingredients and recipes. Held on June 9, it costs just $10 to enter and cooking will start at noon, with the judging at 5 pm. Torrumbarry Community Club president Neil Williams said potential participants could call the hotel or just rock up on the day to register. “People should come along for a great day and all the proceeds will go to the community club,” he said. “It’s aimed at families and $10 will get you a taste of all the food that is prepared in the 44 WHAT'S ON Winter 2019

LOCAL SIDES SET THE PACE IN FOOTY AND NETBALL We are getting to the serious end of winter — the run home to the finals — and EchucaMoama’s big three all have teams in the mix for the games that really count

AS THE season progresses in local football and netball, the clubs that will go deep into the finals are starting to stand up to be counted. And our locals are starting to show their premiership credentials. The Echuca Football and Netball Club is becoming one of the most dominant clubs in the Goulburn Valley League, with the senior football side looking to have massively improved on its form of 2018. The new-look Murray Bombers and their brutal brand of football is making sides around the competition stand up and take notice, with Echuca physically dominating. They looked to be slightly behind Kyabram at the early point of the season, but as the year progresses, expect them to get even better. On the netball courts, the Bombers 46 WHAT'S ON Winter 2019

are in premiership defence mode, but are not letting the season come to them. Instead they are regularly claiming statement victories against the better sides in the competition.

The Bombers are again showing their willingness to change up their systems and game plans and it looks to be putting them in good stead as finals approach. In the Murray League, Echuca United is the surprise packet of the year. The football side, with new spearhead Josh Mellington, looks to be finally living up to its potential. It is taking sides apart, now looking like a genuine top four contender for the year. On the netball courts, the Eagles are looking to be making a jump to the top four. They are easily beating the lower sides, beating good teams and matching it with the absolute best. But Moama’s netball side is still the benchmark. It is belting anyone who dares to take the

team on as the Moama juggernaut rolls on to what looks like the near impossible — a third straight premiership. With LBU also rolling in the HDFNL, three or maybe four premierships in our region in 2019 looks to be a real possibility.

Echuca Distillery and Cafe is the bold vision of owners David and Fiona De Vries who came to Echuca, to retire, from Melbourne in 2012. The two-storey distillery showcases and demonstrates the distillation of craft spirits, including gin, flavoured vodka and liqueurs. And Campaspe Shire Council is encouraging everyone to make the most of the opportunity and soak up the sights on a vintage style cruiser bike. History buffs will be treated to a new exhibition by Echuca Historical Society over winter. A Century of Pioneer Women — Echuca and District 1853 – 1953 will open at the Dickson St museum on June 14. The exhibition features stories and pictures of the women who worked side by side with their menfolk, took over the business when tragedy struck, or just got on with helping others. Read about the first woman to be become a licensed chemist in Victoria and the first town clerk; both of whom were Echuca residents. Find out about our early nursing sisters, midwives, women who made their mark on our community and the lady goat herder supplying milk to the community. There was also the Brigidine Nun who brought her sisters over the oceans and overland all those years ago, arriving in the heat of summer from Ireland. Then there is the group of women who started the Benevolent Society, with many of their given names still unknown. The exhibition will be open daily at 1 Dickson St, Echuca, from 11 am to 3 pm until early September. And make sure you come along to the museum on June 29. The swamp is rich in bird and fish life and is water storage for the Torrumbarry irrigation scheme. Terrick Terrick National Park is 20 km southeast of the town and supports more than 200 species of native flora, including many rare and threatened species. In the township, a series of murals depict the evolution of the dairy industry and groundwater issues. Other murals give an insight into the armed forces, while a monument pays tribute to the Australian Light Horse, and an avenue of honour recalls those who lost their life in the Armoured Corp in Vietnam.
