Things might be cooling off in Echuca-Moama but the action is still red hot. A change of season doesn’t slow the pace down, it just changes the focus. And it’s all about the Winter Blues Festival. This festival is one of Echuca-Moama’s biggest events attracting a crowd well in excess of 15,000 who come for a great weekend of blues and roots music. Local restaurants, pubs and eateries throw open their doors and the crowds spill out onto the streets as the port precinct comes alive. A short drive up the road, Lockington is hosting their annual country music festival. If country music is what you are about then I am assured this is a weekend not to be missed. Rich River Golf Club are hosting their rock’n’roll weekend in July so why not head out there and bust a move to some of the world’s greatest rock tunes. The cold weather may mean warm fires and chilly days but that’s still
no excuse to not head outdoors. Grab a beanie and a warm jumper and head off to a game of local netball or football. Echuca-Moama is sports mad and footy attracts some big crowds whether you head off to a local match here in town, or one a little further afield. If the kids are driving you crazy why not head down to the pool, the temperature is never cold in there and with a 50 m Olympic pool or the kids’ pool and inflatable fun on Sunday, it’s a great place to head off for a few hours on the weekend. Don’t forget there is still the opportunity to dine out at one of the many great places to eat in the twin towns, no doubt the fires will be roaring and waiting for you. Enjoy the cold weather and enjoy all that EchucaMoama has to offer.

The Echuca Moama Visitor Centre housed in the historic pump house beside the Echuca Moama bridge has the best views of the Aquatic Reserve, so bring your family and friends in to enjoy this marvellous part of the town. While you are here you can pick up your guide to the region and find out what events are taking
place in spring. You can book your paddlesteamer ride, find out where to eat and shop, find information on special events and provide you with great maps to guide you in and around the region. The centre showcases a range of local wines, a really comprehensive range of history publications for the region
and great maps detailing access points all along the Murray River. These are available for purchase at the Visitor Centre. There’s something for everyone in the centre — children (and many grownups!!) love to watch “Terry and Myrtle” our wonderful short necked turtles and “Murray” our ever growing Murray cod.

Echuca-Moama Theatre Company’s production of the Phantom of the Opera is set to be the company’s biggest undertaking. And with 12 performances scheduled instead of the usual eight, Mr Wright said it was extremely important to have strong audience engagement. “Like in anything, we take risks and we’ve really made a commitment here,” Mr Wright added. “It’s not silly, it’s measured but we really do need the community’s support,” he said. “We need our people to come along, to get their feet on the ground and watch this fabulous show because that’s what’s really going to make it work in the end.” The Paramount has agreed to let EMTC do some work on the face of the theatre and internally to transform it into the 1890s. “I won’t give it away but I think audiences are going to love it. The whole ambience of the French opera theatre is going to be re-created. “That’s why it’s an icon. It’s why it’s the zenith of musical theatre.” The Phantom of the Opera will take to the stage at the Paramount from May 25 to June 9, tickets are available at the Paramount.

>> The event is a highlight on the calendar of steam enthusiasts, showcasing more than 500 working exhibits of yesteryear. The rally is a jampacked weekend of family entertainment, open to all ages and interests. The historical side of the event is well and truly covered with steam engines valued at more than $500,000 on display, vintage cars and working horses. The Clan Macleod Pipe Band will lead the grand parade followed by steam engines, rollers, tractors, trucks and cars. Sunday as always includes the popular ‘burning down the dunny’ event. Organiser Julie Lomas said this year’s event will also involve a few extras including a chainsaw artist doing wood carvings, a team of Clydesdale horses pulling an old tram/truck and Vicki the truck will 14
be on loan from the state Government. “We will have all our usual things including a food court, small market, all the favourite steam engines, music and plenty of things to keep the kids busy and entertained — pony rides, face painting and animal nursery,” Julie said. Funds raised from the event are passed on to not-for-profit causes and organisations around the district. This year, Echuca Regional Health’s proposed cancer wellness centre will be the lucky beneficiary. The rally will be held at Rotary Park, 1–7 Rose St (or off the Northern Highway), Echuca. YOU can talk about it until you are blue in the face and people still can’t hear enough. About the Echuca-Moama Winter Blues Festival that is. And it’s back again from July 26–29 — a long weekend of great sounding blues and roots music. The festival is a regular fixture on the EchucaMoama entertainment calendar and attracts more than 15,000 people for an extra-long long weekend of heart stopping blues and roots music — the perfect antidote for a bad case of the winter blues. The historic port precinct and the restaurants and hotels that line the streets will throw open their doors as they welcome the large crowds and great soulful music from the country’s best blues musicians. More than 40 blues and roots performers from across the country will entertain the crowd across 30 stages. While some artists are turned over each year to keep the line-up fresh and exciting, there is always those few crowd favourites that return year after year. People travel far and wide to make it to Echuca for the festival and from such humble beginnings, the festival has turned into a blues and roots showcase of national significance. Echuca-Moama is great at supporting community events and Johnno’s Run has been no exception. In 2014, Community Living and Respite Services entered their first ever team in Run Melbourne to raise money for housing for people with disability (Opening Doors Project) — four years later Johnno’s Run is now a major source of fundraising. Johnno’s Run offers community members an opportunity to get fit, meet other people and participate in a team environment while raising money for a great project. Members have the chance to enter a 5 km or 10 km event, or if you are looking for something a little bigger and more challenging, there is always the half marathon. >>

Members meet every Monday at the entrance to Scenic Drive for a walk, run or ride as part of their training regime. To join the team participants must raise $250. This provides free registration, a top to wear on race day, community training sessions, regular updates, support from team members and an invitation to Johnno’s Run breakfast From a team of 15 in 2014 to 210 last year, the run has helped raise over $200,000 for CLRS, with the last two years fundraising going directly to the Opening Doors Project. CLRS chief executive Suzanna Barry said
Johnno’s Run is an outstanding success. “Being part of Run Melbourne with 19,000 other people is very exciting,” Suzanna said. In October 2017 CLRS opened their house in Eyre Street which provides accommodation for six people with disability. CLRS is currently in the process of building a home and two units in Maiden Street, Moama. This project focuses on increasing independence and community inclusion for people with disability and design features enable the use of assistive technology to provide residents with more control over their home environment.

Held at the Anglican Church Hall July 28, from 9.30 am – 4 pm, it offers a host of great stalls including dolls and accessories, teddies, lace and craft supplies. There is nothing you won’t find at the show when it comes to the world of dolls and teddy bears, including the very popular doll doctor. The doll doctor is 36
available to help out with any problems that can be associated with your furry friend or doll. This year there will be three great raffle prizes up for grabs and all proceeds from the day will be donated to local charity Foodbank. CRANKING UP THE OLD CAMP OVEN June 10
The Torrumbarry Community Club is hosting its annual camp oven cook off at the Torrumbarry Hotel on June 10. The event has been filling the stomachs of residents for the past 17 years and organisers are expecting around 30 people to put their cooking skills up for judging again this year. Budding chefs can enter either of two categories — main course or dessert — what you cook is only limited by your imagination. 38
Over the years people have been treated to roasts, curries and Asian, while the 2017 winner whipped up a beautiful tart in the dessert category. All food must be cooked in the camp oven and chefs, cooks and amateurs will be competing for more than $1600 in prizes. After judging people can also sample the food for a

There is plenty to keep you busy, indoors and out, whether you are visiting with someone or on your own. As a sporting town you won’t have to travel too far to find yourself a great day out at the netball or football, there is a game bound to be on somewhere here in Echuca or Moama, or in the surrounding districts of Gunbower, Tongala, Kyabram, Mathoura or Lockington. The port area is always buzzing with action, whether it is a walk through the Port of Echuca Discovery Centre or a ride
on one of the many Murray River Paddlesteamers that cruise up and down. Local history is on proud display; including steam engines, the sawmill and the magnificent wharf. Hopwood Park is a great area to sit down for a picnic and the recently opened children’s playground has certainly got the little people in your life well and truly entertained — for hours at a time. ALL things country will be top of the menu when the Country Music Festival comes to Lockington in August. Artists Craig Giles, Kinta, Sandie Dodd, Grant Luhrs, Annette and Kim, Kerran Keats, Rupe Adams, Ray Macartney, Good Time Band and many more, will keep the large crowd entertained over the weekend long celebrations. The hall features a large dance area and plenty of seating. Co-ordinator Roz Giles said the event moved from Moama to Lockington last year. “The town has really embraced the festival. The feedback I received was wonderful and many people commented Lockington has one of the best dance floors around,” Roz said. The event gets underway Friday at 7.30 pm and will finish Sunday 5.30 pm. Friday only entry is $10, Saturday $26, Sunday $16 or there is an opportunity to grab an online special three-day pass for $40.
No alcohol will be permitted, or sold at the venue but meals, snacks, tea, coffee and soft drinks will be available for purchase at reasonable prices. A tour of The Lockington and District Living Heritage Complex can also be arranged by ringing Des on 0427 862 334. This is a local history museum and resource centre that attracts several
hundred visitors each year and hosts the annual vintage tractor rally. There are a range of accommodation options available from free camping sites, powered and unpowered sites and self-contained units. HAPPY BIRTHDAY PARKRUN ECHUCA-MOAMA PARKRUN recently celebrated their first birthday and what a success it has been. Runners of all different ages, capabilities and speed line up every Saturday morning at the corner of Ogilvie Avenue and Campapse Esplanade, to run the picturesque 5 km course that follows along the Campaspe River. At the start of May, over 1273 runners had participated in the Echuca event, running a total distance of 23,750 km and representing 76 clubs. Every Saturday morning around 90 runners on average line up while the biggest Saturday
attendance to date saw 231 runners hit the track. The average course time 33:37 and the female record holder for the event is Teleah Hayes who ran the course in 17:05 in January this year, while Brady Threlfall holds the male record covering the distance like a Jack rabbit in 15:14, in December last year. If you are looking for a change of scenery why not head up the highway to Cohuna who also host Parkrun. Cohuna runners have

ONE OF THE GREAT PIONEERING DRAMAS ECHUCA Historical Society will host a panel display of on Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton — it is one of the greatest survival stories of all time. The display, on tour from the Australian National Maritime Museum, invites visitors to walk in the footsteps of Shackleton and discover his epic voyage of survival. Shackleton: Escape from Antarctica, brings together firsthand accounts and dramatic images by official expedition photographer, Australian Frank Hurley, telling the compelling story of Shackleton’s Imperial
Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1914–17 and his bid to stay alive. Shackleton set out in August 1914 with a bold plan to be the first to cross Antarctica’s vast interior. His strategy was to have two parties working from opposite sides of the continent. He would lead the Weddell Sea crossing party while a second Ross Sea supply party would lay critical rations ahead of him. Both ships were ultimately lost to their crews (one crushed and the other wrenched away by
the ice), Shackleton’s party would never even touch the continent they hoped to cross, and the other would be marooned on it, desperately sledging across hundreds of kilometres of ice to lay depots for the party which would never come. Kevin Sumption, director and chief executive of the Australian National Maritime Museum said Shackleton’s epic expedition thrilled thousands of visitors during its run in Sydney. “We are delighted this touring panel exhibition will share this fascinating story
with people all around Australia,” Mr Sumption said. The panel exhibitions will visit more than 80 venues in the next three years. There is also information and ephemera from a local resident included in the exhibition. Shackleton: Escape from Antarctica opens June 1 and runs until July 30, at the Echuca Historical Society Museum, 1 Dickson Street, Echuca. Cost of entry is $5 including visit to the museum.
