ECHUCA-MOAMA TURNS IT ON ALL YEAR The Echuca Moama Visitor Information Centre welcomes you and your visitors. The Echuca Moama Visitor Centre housed in the historic pump house beside the Echuca Moama bridge has the best views of the Aquatic Reserve, so bring your family and friends in to enjoy this marvellous part of the town. While you are here you can pick up your guide to the region and find out what events are taking place in summer. You can book your paddlesteamer ride, find out where to eat and shop, find information on special events and provide you with great 10 WHAT'S ON Summer 2018–19

The centre showcases a range of local wines, a really comprehensive range of history publications for the region and great maps detailing access points all along the Murray River. These are available for purchase at the Visitor Centre. There’s something for everyone in the centre — children (and many grownups!!) love to watch “Terry and Myrtle” our wonderful short necked
turtles and “Murray” our ever growing Murray cod. The Centre has free Wi-Fi and wonderful staff and ambassadors who will make your day! ECHUCA HISTORICAL SOCIETY Located in the National Trust Building at 1 Dickson St, the society has been collecting and preserving the history of the town since 1960. Today it is home to an extensive collection of photos and archives and the society regularly hosts displays.

Safe boating on NSW waterways When it comes to the Murray River, which borders Victoria and New South Wales, the laws of NSW apply. Wear a lifejacket Lifejackets are the most important piece of safety equipment on any recreational vessel. An approved lifejacket must be carried for each person on board most vessels. It must be the correct size for the wearer, in good condition and worn in a range of situations. For example:

• Children under 12 years are required to wear a lifejacket at all times in a vessel under 4.8m, and when in an open area of a vessel less than 8m that is underway • On vessels less than 4.8m, everyone must wear a lifejacket when boating at night or when boating alone • On canoes and kayaks, everyone must wear a lifejacket at most times, including at night or when boating alone. These are only some examples of the lifejacket wearing requirements on NSW waterways. If using inflatable lifejackets, these must be serviced at least every 12 months or at longer intervals in accordance with the manufacturers’ instructions. Alcohol and drug offences Breath testing, including random breath testing (RBT), can be conducted on the operator of a vessel while it is underway, including drifting. Permissible concentration of alcohol limits are as follows: • 0.00 for recreational vessel operators aged under 18 years • Less than 0.02 for commercial vessel operators over 18 years • Less than 0.05 for recreational vessel operators over 18 years The operator of a vessel includes anyone steering or exercising control over its course or direction, and includes the observer in a ski boat or PWC and anyone being towed.
Safety on houseboats When you hire a houseboat you will be advised how many people are legally allowed on the vessel at any one time, whether underway or moored. The maximum number on any houseboat is 12, but this could be less depending on the size of the vessel. If you exceed the maximum number of people you may affect the buoyancy of the vessel and cause it to capsize. Never jump from houseboats. It is an offence and you could hit unseen snags in the water, or slip and hit the edge of the boat.
When towing or wake surfing You must have an observer onboard who is responsible for observing the towed people and reporting all matters affecting them to the master, including vessels approaching from behind. The observer must be at least 16 years of age or hold a boat driving licence, must not be under the influence of alcohol or a drug, and should be familiar with the standard hand signals. Consider the impact of your vessel’s wash on other people and the environment, ensuring your wash does not have a dangerous, damaging or unreasonable impact. But it’s not Christmas without a good old carol or two and there is no better place to do that singing than at the Epicentre Christmas Spectacular. SOUTHERN 80 IS WHERE IT ALL HAPPENS THE biggest event to hit the twin towns will get underway from February 8–10 when the Southern 80 comes to town. Featuring fast boats, high speeds and talented skiers, the race is certainly an adrenaline filled rush for both participants and the crowds that line the banks of the river to watch in awe as people race past. The event kicks off on Friday morning with a breakfast with the stars while the action continues down at Vic Park on Friday night with the first Hall of Fame event. Saturday morning the crowd can get up close and personal and view the boats in the static display in Hare St. Short course participants will hit the water from 9 am while the Bakers Blitz will get underway at 2 pm. On Sunday the big boats will start tackling
the 120 bends from Torrumbarry to Echuca from 8.30 am. There will be action galore down at the finish line over the bumper weekend which includes a big screen, kids’ playground, trade sites, food and refreshments. Entertainment and live music will feature on Sunday and will run right through to the presentations. The Southern 80 is the largest ski race in the world and attracts thousands of visitors to the town annually — organisers are running with the tagline #see you at the finish line. In a festival first, Tex Perkins and the Tennessee Four will take to the stage in Far From Folsom, an award-winning show embodying Johnny Cash’s iconic performances at Folsom and San Quentin prisons in the late 1960s. >> The swim is part of the tri club’s multisport festival weekend and gets underway at 9.30 am from the Port of Echuca Wharf, finishing at Morrison’s Winery for lunch and a fun family day. The club is also considering offering the opportunity to float down the course but stay tuned and check out social media as we are unable to confirm approval at the time of print. Club president Steve Loader said the club was looking at adding to this great event. “The Wharf to Winery swim is a popular event and we thought we could add to it by including a fun floating event. Finishing at Morrison’s is a perfect end to a great morning, followed up by some great food,” Steve said. Last year a field of more than 70 male and female swimmers, and three juniors tackled the event. 44 WHAT'S ON Summer 2018–19
The open men’s event was won by James Mace in a time of 24:20 while Hollie Buerkner took the open female victory for the second year in a row. Last year, she completed the race in 27:48. This year she cut her time down to 26:32. Entry fees for the swim are $35 for social and $50 for the open category. Trophies and/or prize money are up for grabs across the open, social and junior categories. Family and friends looking for travel can jump aboard the PS Canberra, tickets must be purchased from swim registration on the morning — barbecue lunch will be available. In the lead up to this year’s NYE meeting, the club received a $20 000 cash boost for its first festive season meet — held on December 5. The Victorian Government tipped in $8500, ERC contributed almost $8000 and Country Racing Victoria added another $4 000. “We’d like to thank the Victorian Government for its support for our 2018 Christmas Races, and its ongoing support for racing in Echuca,” ERC chief executive Leigh Newton said. If you were wondering just how good a day at the races can be, ERC recently crowned a huge 2017–18 season when it was named the bet365 Country Racing Victoria Club of the Year. It was fitting reward for a massive year which saw the club complete the year with a record profit under the guidance of Newton. “We have had a tremendous year and this achievement is great recognition of the hard work undertaken by everyone at the club, from staff to committee and all our volunteers,” Newton said. It also raced 11 times, staged three feature events — Melbourne Cup Day, New Year’s Eve and Echuca Cup Day — and boosted attendances, membership and sponsorship. Newton said the club was also recognised for its community focus through programs such as Partner of Riding Develops Abilities (which uses the club’s facilities), and are ongoing supporters of many local community groups, charity organisations, and fundraisers. IT’S TIME FOR A NATIONAL CELEBRATION AUSTRALIA Day — it’s a chance for the community to come together and celebrate — from the presentation of Australia Day awards and citizenships to raising the flag and inspirational guest speakers. And it wouldn’t be Australia Day without an esky, a pair of thongs and a sausage thrown on the barbecue. Events are staged right across towns throughout the shires both sides of the Murray and include Lockington, Gunbower, Rochester, Wyuna, Tongala, Stanhope, Girgarre, Koyuga, Kyabram, Ky Valley and Rushworth, Mathoura and Moama. This year the Rotary Club is hosting the inaugural Echuca-Moama Australia Day Breakfast at the Aquatic Reserve on behalf of the
Campaspe Shire and Murray River Council. The early bird breakfast will start at 7 am while the formalities get underway at 7.45 am. The breakfast will include historic and vintage cars, army cadets flag parade and raising, Federal Band and EMTC youth chorus, historic aircraft flypast, live music, face painting and children’s entertainment, new Australian citizens oath of allegiance ceremonies, awarding of the citizen of the year and the Australia Day ambassador’s address.

FLASHING PEDALS TAKE CENTRE STAGE Echuca Moama Cycling Club is hosting a junior track carnival at the Moama Velodrome on Saturday, January 5. Catering for beginners through to the more experienced, the committee is hoping to see riders of all abilities aged from nine to 17, make their way to the velodrome for a great day and night of racing. Starting under the sun and finishing under the track's lights, the afternoon and twilight sessions will cater for five races per age group and highlights will be the Victorian under 15 and 17 point score titles. The track opens from 11 am and racing starts at 1 pm sharp for novices and 2 pm sharp for juniors. 62 WHAT'S ON Summer 2018–19

A BRIDGE NOT TOO FAR AWAY The Bridge to Bridge has been a favourite event in the Cohuna community for the past 25 years. What started out as a simple bet amongst a couple of locals to raise a few bucks for the Cohuna Hospital quickly morphed into a weekend extravaganza of fitness including swimming, cycling, paddling, running and, finally, a triathlon. And every one of those has raised, or is continuing to raise — valuable funds along the way for the Cohuna Hospital. But like all good things it must eventually come to an end. Not the event, though; just the venue. On March 23, the Bridge to Bridge will be heading in a new direction under its new management — the Cohuna Progress Association. It has embraced the opportunity to keep this grassroots fundraiser going but has brought it out of the water and onto dry land. With the beautiful backdrop of the Gunbower 66 WHAT'S ON Summer 2018–19
National Park as Cohuna's backyard the CPA has envisaged a half marathon and 12 km trail run will be the perfect plan for the latest incarnation of this vital event on the local calendar. An event that wouldn't be complete without the ever-popular 6.5 km run/walk and 2 km course for the kids (and the adults who allegedly could run much further but 'need' to keep the kids company). And to keep things rolling along there will also be opportunities for the bicycle brigade; with events from 50 km through 25 km — or just 6.5 km for the young and not-so-young. The organising committee has been delighted with responses to date and are excited about the new look program. Now they just need more of you to sign on and try and make the 2019 new-look Cohuna classic into a major success and even better, a major money maker for the hospital.

Why not drop a line in on the banks of the Gunbower Creek and fish your way to some magnificent prizes while you are at it. The Cohuna Fishing Classic is a catch and release fishing competition held at Cohuna. Open to land based and boating entrants, the competition targets Murray Cod and Golden Perch, photograph fish registration will be used. The event is open to both adult and junior entrants (16 and under). Proceeds will go toward supporting the Cohuna District Hospital and projects to benefit recreational fishing in the local area. Meals will be served Saturday morning through to Sunday lunchtime at Cohuna Recreation Reserve complex, although Saturday
lunch will be delivered on the water. Non competitors can purchase meals for $10. Camping is permitted within the Gunbower State Forst or at the Cohuna Waterfront Holiday Park. SOFT CINEMA PROMISES A SUMMER SENSATION What do the movies Kenny and Daddy’s Home have in common? Not a lot other than the fact they will be shown at the inaugural Wharparilla West Hall drive-in movie night on January 25. The hall committee is looking at bringing a new event into the community while raising some much needed funds for their beloved hall along the way. The screening will get underway with Kenny at 6.30 pm followed by Daddy’s Home. A jumping castle and face painting will also be available to help keep the kids entertained. The cost of the event is $10 an adult and $5 a child with a maximum cost of $30 per car. The Rich River Rod and Custom Club are also
jumping on board to support the event and they are urging anyone to bring their fancy cars along. There will also be a prize for the most popular people’s choice car, as voted by the crowd on the night. The Bamawm Pony Club and the local scout committee will be catering with a barbecue, popcorn, lollies and cold drinks. GREAT WAY TO RING IN THE NEW YEAR IF YOU are looking for a relaxing and fun filled way to spend New Year’s Day, why not head down to the Frank Ryan Raceway in Simmie St, Echuca, and enjoy a great evening of harness racing. The twilight race meeting includes a 10-race card offering punters plenty of chances to back a winner, with TAB facilities and bookmakers on course. Gates open at 4.30 pm and the event is fully catered, with the dining room open and on site catering available. Mathoura offers visitors the chance to see forest and waterways, as well as the chance to discover the district’s fascinating natural and cultural heritage. Check out the bird observatory, Picnic Point recreation area and the pioneer cemetery. Mathoura Visitor and Business Centre is also a must for wine tasting, buying local jams, honey, art and craft and to learn about Mathoura’s history. The Mathoura Speed Shear is an annual fundraiser for cancer which celebrates the talent of local shearers.
RUSHWORTH from Echuca

Rushworth is a historic gold mining town, steeped in well preserved history and nostalgia. Great views from the fire lookout at Growlers Hill encompass Waranga Reservoir, Rushworth Forest and the Goulburn Valley. Waranga Basin, to the north-east of the town, is a tourist drawcard providing opportunities for boating, fishing and camping, while south of Rushworth is Whroo Historic Reserve, which represents the remnants of what was once a thriving gold mining town of 1000 people and 139 buildings.

PYRAMID HILL from Echuca

Pyramid Hill is named after the granite hill that looms out of the countryside. In spring rare wildflowers may be found blooming amongst the rocks and it is a great place to spend an afternoon clamoring over the rocks. Other interesting places to visit in the area include Terrick Terrick National Park and Mt Hope, as well as the town’s museum. Terrick Terrick National Park is 20 km south-east of the town and supports more than 200 species of native flora, including many rare and threatened species. Scenic drives take visitors to grasslands, granite outcrops, eucalypt woodlands and historical farming sites.
DENILIQUIN from Echuca

Set on the Edward River, Deniliquin offers a variety of activities for visitors, including bushwalking and water sports. The Peppin Heritage and Visitor Information Centre is the ideal starting point. Heritage walks take you past the town’s historic buildings and along the tree-lined river to the Island Sanctuary, where abundant bird life can be seen. Markets are held on the fourth Saturday of each month in the Waring Gardens. Famous for the Deniliquin Ute Muster in October, Deniliquin also celebrates the Sun Festival and rodeo in January.

Cohuna is a peaceful town overlooking the picturesque Gunbower Creek, close to Gunbower Islands attractions including fishing, boating, canoeing, birdwatching, four-wheel driving and walking tracks. The Gateway Information Centre in the middle of town is an ideal place to discover the area. During the first weekend of March the community hosts the Cohuna Bridge to Bridge — a weekend of great family activity including a half marathon, walk, cycling and running events, to raise money for the hospital. The Cohuna Golf Course is the home course of PGA Tour star Stuart Appleby and the big Cohuna Festival in November is a five day celebration of the town.
LEITCHVILLE from Echuca

Leitchville is just a short drive from the ecologically significant wildlife site known as Kow Swamp. The swamp is rich in bird and fish life and is water storage for the Torrumbarry irrigation scheme. A picnic area on the east side of the lake is complete with swimming area, toilets and barbecue facilities. More barbecue facilities are available at the north end of the swamp, an area commonly used for fishing. Leitchville is also an RV friendly town.

Rochester has joined the Silo Art Trail with a larger than life azure kingfisher and squirrel glider now welcoming visitors to the area. This resilient little town is home to many great things including the Sir Hubert (Oppy) Opperman Sports Museum containing personal memorabilia from his sporting and political life. A life size Oppy bronze statue is situated in Moore Street alongside many colourful and interesting murals created by artists during the annual Mural Festival each March. A heritage walk from the main bridge to the red brick bridge takes in the old sale yards bull ring, the old water tower and shire hall, while the western bank of the Campaspe River has been set aside as a passive recreation reserve. The Torrumbarry Loch is a great place to spend a few hours. Marvel at the majestic loch or take a wander through the heritage display and information centre nearby. The original weir was replaced in 1996, but major parts have been preserved including the original steel trestles, which were winched out of the river in times of flood. Camping and barbecue facilities are available.

Tongala was settled by squatters in the 1840s and irrigation ensured the success of this intensive little dairying community. In the township, a series of murals depict the evolution of the dairy industry and groundwater issues. Other murals give an insight into the armed forces, while a monument pays tribute to the Australian Light Horse, and an avenue of honour recalls those who lost their life in the Armoured Corp in Vietnam.

Gunbower is the gateway to Australia’s largest inland island and significant wildlife sanctuary, Gunbower Island. The island is home to protected populations of kangaroos, emus, goannas, possums, snakes and 160 different species of birds. It is an idyllic location for camping, canoeing and a spot of bushwalking or bird watching. The running of the Gunbower Gold Cup in October is a picnic race day out for all the family.

Barmah is the gateway to the World Heritage listed Barmah State Forest which, with the Moira State Park, forms the largest red gum forest in the world. A forest drive from Barmah heads off along River Rd, which is two-wheel drive friendly, but dusty when dry. Kingfisher Wetland Cruises allows people to see the ecology and history of the forest, with some trees estimated to be more than 300 years old and more than 40 m high, the birdlife and its habitats and the Aboriginal significance of the area.

BOOK IN FOR LIBRARY FUN IF YOU are looking for a bit of quiet time and some cool relief during the school holidays why not head down to the library and participate in their popular holiday program. Library Services general manager Jenny Mustey said the library was a great place to spend some time and it offers more than just a place to borrow a book — in the holidays it becomes a hive of activity for the kids. The summer reading club will be held across all shire libraries, starting December 1 and running through until the end of the January holidays. This year’s theme is curious creatures and should provide some entertaining reading.

Children can register their interest from December 1 at any branch where they will receive their SRC reading log and other little incentives as they read their way through summer. The library also has a wide range of activities on offer including art workshops courtesy of the National Gallery of Victoria. Santa story time will be held Friday, December 14 at 10.30 am, Saturday 15 at 11 am and Monday 17 at 10.30 am. GET MOOVING TO GIRGARRE AND ITS MOOSIC IT’S THAT time of the year when the annual Girgarre Moosic Muster gets set to rock hundreds of visiting music lovers flocking to the town from January 10–13. The Moosic Festival is a major drawcard on the Victorian acoustic calendar and includes bluegrass, folk, blues, country, pop, gospel and contemporary music. The 2019 program has been extended from two days to four and will include a gala Saturday night concert at the Gargarro Sound Shell, more than 30 workshops, a doubling of open mike time, evening concerts and a ukulele extravaganza held at its own special venue. Muster director Jan Smith said there was something for everyone. “It’s going to be an amazing experience for all of us. Imagine kicking back on a balmy summer’s evening on our sloping amphitheatre lawn, with drinks and nibbles, and enjoying top-class music — and all for free,” Jan said. The festival will include workshops on mandolin, guitar, piano accordion, harmonica, banjo, double bass, violin, ukulele, percussion, advanced instrument techniques, song writing and whatever else happens to pop up. Entertainment includes harmony singing, Jigarre Jammin’ community jam, the ‘60s singalong, poetry writing, the hilarious joke competition and the Sunday gospel singalong. popular with primary schoolchildren and there’s even free instrument loans for those wanting to try something new. Continuous informal jams pop up throughout the site and around the tents and caravans. “The requests from newer musos to be allowed time on stage have been incredible. To cater for them we are now officially starting at 10 am on Thursday with walkups.” The event is free, the only charge is for camping at the site, but that fee includes three meals and full use of amenities for the entire muster period. “We’ve always been about country friendliness and having a go. We welcome players of all ages and stages and those who just want to listen. The muster is a brilliant opportunity to just immerse yourself in music, whatever style you may prefer.” The extremely popular Girgarre market will take place on Sunday at the site, with visiting bands playing continuously. NOTHING DIGITAL BUT PLENTY ARE ORIGINAL EVER wondered what kids did to keep themselves amused back in the old days? Well wonder no more. A photographic and memorabilia exhibition at the Echuca Historical Society, running until February will show you exactly what they did. Growing Up in Echuca is a charmingly reminiscent account of the good old days when kids seemed capable of making their own fun. The focus on the exhibition is to connect today's children to the yesteryears of their parents and grandparents, while engaging with family history along the way. The simple games of skippy, hula hoop, flying a kite, building a crystal set, Lego, marbles or a billy cart kept many a young child entertained for not just hours but days and weeks on end.
