DENI FEST Deniliquin and district comes alive at Easter with a vast array of events and experiences which make up a larger Deni Fest. A festival of art and culture, the celebrations begin on April 1 and continue on GooD Friday and Easter Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Running all weekend is the Rotary Easter Art Show, with artwork from regional artists showcased in the Multi Arts Centre in Deniliquin’s CBD. Read more on page 5.

Edward River Council proudly partners with local community groups for Deni Fest each year, and spokesperson Tiffany Carroll said it will be a weekend to remember.

Arts, crafts and culture is also a main focus of other events on Easter, Saturday, April 3, including the ArtOut Artisan and Vintage Market.

“Deni Fest is such a great weekend to showcase our wonderful town and surrounding villages — from the open air markets to the vibrant street stalls, exhibitions at The Peppin Heritage Centre, the rodeo and simply enjoying our country hospitality,” Ms Carroll said.

A unique selection of local wares, including art, illustrations, and detailed sculptures, will grace the rolling greens of Waring Gardens, also in Deniliquin’s CBD. Read more on page 5. On that Saturday evening the action moves to the Deniliquin Rodeo Grounds on Racecourse Rd, for the thrills and spills of the annual twilight rodeo. A food truck and live music will also be there to keep the munchies away. Read more on page 7. Back in the Deniliquin Waring Gardens on Easter Monday, the Lions Club Community Garden will offer up more food, stalls and music.

ART AT EASTER Deniliquin is a destination for the arts and craft lovers at Easter. The four-day Rotary Easter Art Show is complemented by a one-day ArtOut market on Easter Saturday, and both are held in the heart of the Deniliquin CBD. An exquisite burst of talent from the local area and further afield can be viewed when the Rotary Easter Art Show opens at noon on Thursday, April 1. Edward River Art Society partners with Deniliquin Rotary to put on the event, and proceeds are then spent on community projects. ERAS member Jan Harris said as one of the first events of the Easter long weekend, it leads in to Deni Fest nicely. “Art is visually stimulating and relaxing to your mind. You can find paintings which speak to you, as an individual. “If you’re new to the art world, on Easter Sunday expert Henry Gillespie will walk patrons through the show to focus on the merit of the artistic pieces.” Prizes are awarded in 10 categories — portraits and people; abstract, symbolic imagery in any medium; waterscapes, seas, rivers, lakes and more; landscapes; still life; fauna; miniature and small paintings; sculpture; colour photography; and black and white photography. There is also an award specifically for local artists, as well as three acquisitive prizes. The Rotary Easter Art Show is held in the Deniliquin Multi Arts Centre, in the Deniliquin Waring Gardens at the corner of Cressy and Edwardes streets.

The gardens surrounding the Multi Arts Centre will swell with more artists and artisans on Easter Saturday for the ArtOut market from 9am to 1pm. ArtOut isn’t your typical arts exhibition — it’s a bustling, lively market with a bright, creative atmosphere. Local craftspeople, artists, foodies, sculptors, and other artisans gather to push a huge variety of exciting wares. Fashionable and unique vintage clothing, gourmet produce, and an intense selection of sculpture, art, and photography to suit perusers of every taste will crowd the generous park. Live music and buskers will add to the atmosphere. Market coordinator Jane Frazer said ArtOut is also an opportunity to encourage sustainability. “ArtOut is a makers’ market for artisans as well as a vintage market, run by the Edward River Sustainability Group and supported by Edward River Council,” she said. “We aim to promote local, handmade, upcycled and unique wares, in the spirit of positive regional living. “ArtOut is an opportunity for makers, creators, artists, and artisans to exhibit and sell their work from gazebos in an open-air market-style event. “It is also an opportunity for the customers to ‘meet the maker’ in a relaxed atmosphere. “And it all works within our goal to be an artistic destination.” What’s On Autumn 2021 5

Rodeo Grounds, Old Racecourse Rd. The 2021 Deniliquin Twilight Rodeo promises to be an action packed evening, sure to excite the whole family. LIVE MUSIC commences at 3pm and the RODEO ACTION starts at 4pm with the who’s who of the rodeo circuit competing for Pro Rodeo championship points. The twilight programme includes the feature event OPEN SADDLE BRONC RIDE, the ever popular BULL RIDE, local PUB STEER RIDE CHALLENGE, LADIES BARREL RACE, STEER WRESTLING, JUNIOR EVENTS and more.

The Race Entertainment TRICK RIDERS will also appear during the rodeo adding even more excitement. TRADE and FOOD STALLS also operating.

HOLD ON TO YOUR HATS You’re sure to have a bucking good time in the Southern Riverina this Easter, with the Deniliquin and Finley rodeos being held the same weekend. Cowboys and cowgirls will first saddle up at Deniliquin on Easter Saturday, April 3 and then they’ll wow the crowds at Finley the next day.

The bucking spectacular is a definite highlight of Deni Fest, with a diverse range of events sure to impress every member of the family.

Both twilight events are included in the Australian Pro Rodeo Association circuit, with points up for grabs for the weekend’s top performers.

The gates at the Deniliquin Rodeo Grounds on Racecourse Rd will open from 4pm on Easter Saturday.

Each will exhibit fast paced, rough stock rides which are sure to include thrills and spills.

“We’ve got the wildest bulls in all of Australia coming from the McPhee rodeo company,” he said.

In addition to the crowd favourite bull ride, there will be saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, rope and tie and barrel racing events.

“They are the best of the best, and they come all the way from the back blocks of Queensland and Caboolture to try and kill the cowboys.

At Deniliquin, Deniliquin Rodeo president Greg Rourke said a highlight will be the trick riders.

“It’s the first big rodeo we’ve had in a good few years (in Deni), so everybody’s keen. There will be kids as young as eight and 10 riding bareback.”

“Our trick riders are coming up from the north, and include both male and female riders,” he said. “They run around the arena full noise, and then do jumps and twists, and even hang upside down. “It’s always exciting horsemanship.”

There will also be children’s entertainment, and even a visit from the Easter Bunny. Free camping, showers, toilets, and a courtesy bus to and from Deniliquin only sweetens the deal, making it easy for enthusiasts to enjoy the festivities at their own pace. What’s On Autumn 2021 7

Apex in January, but was moved to Easter this year because of the COVID-19 rules in place over the Apex president Andrew Stephan said since last year’s January rodeo, a lot of work has been completed at the Finley Rodeo Grounds in Tongs St. The new lighting in particular will enhance the twilight rodeo experience, with the gates open from 4.30pm. “We have competitors coming from everywhere and everyone’s keen to catch up,” he said. “Like many around here, I grew up around rodeos, and I’m excited to a get another generation excited about it. “It’s a chance to support local, and take part in a great family event.”

It’s autumn. The weather is getting cooler, but it’s not too cold that you can’t still enjoy a day by the river or even a full weekend camping. And if the mercury does happen to plummet when you’re sleeping under the stars, a small fire to keep you warm just adds to the experience camping provides. There’s a myriad of camping options available to you in the Southern Riverina. You can stay close to town in one of the many caravan parks, or if you want something a little more secluded, camping amongst the giant river red gums in a National Park is the perfect backdrop. Following is a list of some of the camping areas in this region.

Woperana campground, Tocumwal (Murray Valley National Park)

Willoughbys Beach campground, Deniliquin (Murray Valley Regional Park)

Sprawled across the 206ha Benarca Forest are nine campgrounds offering impressive views of the Murray River from your tent, campervan or caravan site. With the hum of cicadas and corellas and the majestic Australian river red gums, it’s hard not to feel immersed in nature. Enjoy a walk along the river, mountain bike ride at the nearby Five Mile mountain bike trail, or enjoy a spot of birdwatching.

Suitable for tents, caravans and motorhomes, this is a great camping spot for the whole family to enjoy – even the dog. If you’re looking for a little fix of the outside world during your stay, there’s a sealed track that meanders along Edward River, through the Deniliquin CBD and to McLean’s Beach, so you can easily wander into town for a coffee and to collect the daily paper. There’s plenty to do in the park – try your hand at a spot of fishing and be sure to bring your bikes along to explore the park’s trails. You can also put your boat into the Edward River using this easily accessible boat ramp, best suited for small to medium vessels.

Edward River Bridge campground, Mathoura (Murray River Regional Park)

If you’re looking to get off the beaten track, head to Woperana campground. This free campground is only accessible during dry weather and it’s best to take a 4WD. It’s one of the remote camping areas in the park, and with space for only three to four camps at a time, you’re bound to enjoy the solitude. It’s a great place to enjoy a spot of fishing or kayaking, and it’s definitely a wonderfully serene place to relax.

Set on the picturesque Edward River, Edward River Bridge campground is bush camping at its best. It’s a great choice for a family camping holiday. There’s plenty to keep everyone happy – go for an energising stroll on the Gulpa Creek walk, barbecue at the neighbouring Edward River Bridge picnic area, throw in a line or relax with a book under the shade of a river red gum. Remember to bring your binoculars, as this part of the park is great for birdwatching.

Mulwala campground, Mulwala (Murray River Regional Park)

Many set up camp here as it’s a great place for fishing. You might be lucky to catch some yellowbelly, redfin, brim, catfish, and carp, as well as crayfish during the season. If fishing doesn’t float your boat, take the dog for an easy walk along the riverbank to secluded swimming and picnicking areas. It’s also a great place to launch a kayak or canoe. There are plenty of camping spots for caravans, campers, and tents within groves of black box trees.

Also known as Hinches Beach, Mulwala campground offers campsites for caravans, motorhomes and tents, and is perfectly positioned next to the mighty Murray River. Because of its location within Murray Valley Regional Park, you can even bring your dog along. You can explore the park on foot or on your bike or paddle the river in a kayak or canoe, and be sure to bring your fishing rod along. What’s On Autumn 2021 9

Quicks Beach campground, Barooga (Murray Valley National Park) With the Murray River at your front door, and the magnificent river red gums in your backyard, Quicks Beach campground is only 3.5km from the centre of Barooga. However you travel, you’re bound to find a bush camp that suits you. Take your fishing gear and your swimmers – the river is perfect for dropping in a line and the grassy campground rolls down to a sandy beach where the kids can build a sandcastle. To keep visitors safe, all camping in NSW National Parks now requires a booking (fee applies). PADDOCK TO TABLE The Southern Riverina is a heartland for agriculture, with a veritable smorgasbord of produce grown locally. There’s no better opportunity to get the real paddock to plate experience than visiting one of the farmers’ markets held across the region. Buy fruit and vegetables straight from the grower, and straight out of the ground washed and ready for you take home to enjoy. And then make sure to pick up some of the sauces, condiments, snacks and sweet treats made using that same produce from some of the other stallholders.

Local meat producers are also known to frequent the markets – there’s nothing quite as tender as a steak or roast straight from the farm to your table. Apiarists also frequent markets in this region, which allows you to get a real taste of our area by enjoying honey produced from trees and plants found locally. THE BIG TREE at Moulamein

Moulamein is the Riverina’s oldest town. It’s still easy to picture dusty drovers making their way into Moulamein’s Tattersalls Hotel for a pint, and colonial era housewives washing draws in the deep and fertile waters of Edward River. The old wharf in Moulamein exists to this day, an artefact from pre-railway times. The Mooloomoon Woolshed, and the Pastoral History Display, take visitors on a tour of the colonial front, examining the town’s rich history. However there are treasures in Moulamein far older than this, some which are believed to pre-date colonisation. A, awe inspiring river red gum measuring almost 12 metres in circumference looms tall over the Edward River. Simply known as ‘The Big Tree’, it is believed to be the largest river red gum tree in Australia. The Big Tree is estimated to be up to 1000 years old, and is an important cultural site for the traditional owners of the land — the Wamba Wamba people. The natural wonder is also a must see for any visitor or resident of the Riverina. It is exactly what drew selfproclaimed ‘Big Tree Seekers’ Aaron

and Kristie-Lee Poole to the region, all the way from Adelaide. They travelled for 12 hours there and back, to spend an hour basking in the glory of ‘The Big Tree’ and Aaron said it was worth every second. “The Moulamein tree is particularly significant, because you will be hard pressed to find any other trees of that size and age class in the area. “Here in Australia, we have some of the worst habitat loss on the planet. “It is in a rare and endangered class in that there are not too many left that are like this particular tree.” Aaron has been in pursuit of big trees all over the country and the world since he was 23. Now 42, he said Moulamein’s massive red gum is definitely worth seeing. “People are fascinated about big trees and this one would pre-date settlement. “But, if people don’t know where they are, they won’t visit them. “The more people who come and visit them, the more promotion you have, the more people you have

MOAMA LIGHTS Moama’s newest festival will launch in May 2021! The inaugural festival will run over three weeks and is an immersive sound and light trail starting at the underside of the Echuca Moama bridge and highlighting the natural beauty through Horseshoe Lagoon before finishing at the Murray River. Every night from May 8 to 22, captivating light installations will transform Horseshoe Lagoon and tell the story of Echuca Moama through light and sound. The show will feature light installations and projections including theatrical fog, strobe and cutting edge moving light technology. The show will feature three distinct acts: Echuca Moama indigenous culture, riverboat heritage and present day life. Agriculture, aviation, transport, pioneering ventures, famous locals and the local community’s role in war are common themes found throughout the region, but there are so many other topics and pastimes to explore as you make your way through our region. The Depot brings history to life in Deniliquin. Immerse yourself in the past amongst the familyfriendly interactive displays and activities. With touches of Hollywood, trucking and transport, Australian motoring, rescue vehicles and cars from all around the world, The Depot is full of nostalgia and discovery. The Depot is open Monday to Friday, 10am - 4pm and Weekends 10am - 4pm (DST).

SAVERNAKE STATION TOUR Mulwala-Savernake Road, Savernake

Alexander and Ann Sloane have drawn upon the extensive archival, natural and historic assets of their family property to offer tours, self-contained accommodation, audiovisual products, and books. Savernake Station is a working historic pastoral property, 20 minutes north of Lake Mulwala. Explore unique high-quality Australian bush, 400 hectares of pristine speciesrich box-pine woodland. Animal species sightings are dependent on weather and seasonal conditions.

Berrigan & District Heritage Museum 60 Jerilderie St, Berrigan

Berrigan is proud of being credited with several firsts – the first Corowa Conference on Federation in 1893, the first Rural Fire Brigade in NSW in 1901 and the first Parents and Citizens Association in NSW. Local oral histories, Federation information, fire brigade memorabilia and material relating to the Berrigan RSL are important features of the museum which also houses collections about farming life and the introduction of irrigation and local schools.

Travel back in time and experience the era of the classic cars, trucks, caravans, tractors and a host of other collectables. Set on 1.8 hectares, Chrysties Museum is a lifetime collection of amazing treasures from an old logging truck to working vintage cars, farming equipment, classic caravans, and collectables.

OAKLANDS Vintage MACHINERY Museum 1 Young Street, Oaklands, NSW

Here you can explore the local history of agricultural and mining machinery, mostly horse powered. Among the collection are harvesters, binders, winnowers, hay loaders and presses, sweeps, chaffcutters, tractors, ploughs and wool presses. There are also wagons, sulkies, carts, a 1926 IHC truck and 1932 Bedford truck.

Good Vibrations Motorcycle Museum 29C Livingstone Street, Mathoura

Good Vibrations is a museum where fellow bike enthusiasts can gather and talk all day about two-wheelers. The oldest bike on show is a 1949 Triumph Speed Twin, and the newest is a 1978 sixcylinder Honda. Among the other bikes is a blue Triumph ‘blockade’ bike which was locked in the Triumph Engineering Company’s factory in England during a strike in the early 1970s. The museum building comes with a coffee shop attached. The museum is open by appointment only. Call Tom Weyrich on 0429 950 594.

Ute Muster Museum Hay Rd, Deniliquin

The museum tells the story of the Deni Ute Muster from its beginnings in 1999 to the present day, and also pays tribute to the ute, the history behind some of the festival’s most popular events and attractions, and more. Items on display will include the contents of a ‘history box’ for each year of the event, including stickers, articles, tickets, wrist bands and even merchandise for that particular year. Honour boards listing competition winners for each year have also been produced. There are interactive touch screens where people can go through the photos from each year of the muster, and possibly find one of themselves, and a library has been created containing magazines and newspapers which featured the ute muster, books about or which mention the Deni Ute Muster and even books on the artists who have performed at the event. Dunera Museum 421 Murray Street, Hay

More than 6,000 German, Italian and Japanese civilian Internees and Prisoners of War (POW) were kept in three prison camps at Hay between 1940 and 1946, and this museum serves as an interpretive centre to tell their story. The museum is named for the ’Dunera Boys’ - 1984 German Jews and other refugees from Nazi occupied Europe, who were the first internees of British Government WWII policy and arrived in Hay in September 1940. The museum houses exhibits, photographs, stories and music about experiences of internees, POWs and townsfolk.

Corowa Federation Museum 56 Queen Street, Corowa

Step back in time and discover Corowa’s history and its role in the birth of Federation in Australia. Museum displays explore the reason for Australia becoming a federation, Corowa’s involvement and Dr John Quick’s role in the federation. The museum also features local Aboriginal artefacts, Tommy McRae sketches, horse drawn vehicles and saddlery and locally manufactured agricultural implements.

Finley Historical Museum & Log Cabin Tongs St, Finley

The Finley Historical Museum is a showcase of the heritage of the Finley district and provides the opportunity to step back in time and view those items that supported the lives of its pioneering rural families. The log cabin is a replica of the first permanent residence in the Finley district, built by Charles McAllister at Myrtle Park in 1878. Pavilions display a vast array of historic farm machinery and memorabilia giving great insight to rural life prior to federation.

Over just three days you’ll get a taste for what the region has to offer, that will either inspire you to stay on longer or keep coming back for more. Following is a suggested itinerary to ensure you get the most out of your stay.

DAY 1 The towns and villages North of the Murray welcome people towing caravans or travelling in motor homes, and is well set up with facilities to make exploring the region easy and convenient. Start your journey at Howlong. Grab some bait and some insider tips before heading to the river for a spot of fishing. Who knows, a mighty Murray cod might be waiting for you. If you’re lucky, that’s dinner sorted! Otherwise, you’re still in luck, as there’s a host of great restaurants in town. Best of all, they’re all in easy walking distance of the caravan park.

DAY 2 Enjoy a fresh breakfast at one of the local eateries before packing up your gear for an easy 20 minute drive to Corowa. Wander the historic main street at your own pace, looking out for signposted heritage sites commemorating the town’s role in Australia’s Federation. There are things to discover around every corner, including the Federation Museum. Pop into Corowa Whisky and Chocolate for lunch, an informative tour and delicious samples. Spend the afternoon exploring more of Corowa, or make your way to the small town of Oaklands where you will find overnight RV parking and the Vintage Machinery Museum.

DAY 3 Depending on your preferences (and the weather forecast), kick off the day either heading north to the aquatic playground of Urana – featuring waterside walking tracks and sculptures that form part of a sculpture trail that also takes in Corowa, Boree Creek, Oaklands and Morundah – or back down to vibrant Lake Mulwala for lakeside leisure, water sports and fishing. Wherever you go, there are camping grounds and caravan parks to relax in, giving you all the time in the world to enjoy the simplicity of nature. The Booligal Sheep Races returns in 2021 with a new committee who are all revved up for a FANTASTIC day out at Booligal. Gates open at 11am, ﬁrst race at 1pm $50 to hire a sheep to race on the day. BOOLIGAL SHEEP RACES Picture this; the air is tense. You hear a gunshot blast off next to your ear. Next, you hear the scattering of hooves against the ground and then furry sheep rocket down the track. Just 75km north of Hay, the historic town of Booligal hosts this race day with a difference each year. The committee behind the Booligal Sheep Races have locked in April 10 for this year’s event, and promises a day of family fun with a larrikin twist. Centred on the town’s cricket ground, the race is Booligal’s biggest day of the year. The sheep race started in the 1988, making this year the 31st since the event started. The “big family fun day” kicks off at 11am and the runners — sheep from a local farm — start their heats at 1pm. There are 20 heats leading up to the famed Booligal Cup race, the winner of which gets to take home the cup. The ‘owner’ of the cup winning sheep also claims a tidy $1000 cash prize. “It’s a funny sort of cup; it’s actually an old drenching gun,” Booligal

The displays at the Jindera Pioneer Museum are steeped in rich history, and have been expanded thanks to the opening of the Tim Fischer Working MachineS Shed. Created thanks to a bequest from the former Deputy Prime Minister and popular Australian politician, the new display pays tribute to his love of farm and other machinery. It will be officially opened as part of a museum open day with a focus on lost trades, to be held at the museum on Sunday, March 21. Museum volunteer Chris Edgar said the new display will “inspire and amaze”, much like the other great displays at the museum. “There are old tractors and working engines in the Tim Fischer Working Machines Shed,” she said. “We have a group of fellas who like to tinker around in there, and on March 21 the shed will be officially opened by the late Tim Fischer’s wife Judy Brewer. “The focus on lost trades will also be a great attraction. “You will see things you don’t see so often anymore, lost trades like blacksmithing, spinning and wood turning. A fellow will also come and build a stone wall. “It’s a way to get away from the world of mass production. There has been a bit of turn around to things that are handmade, and preserve those skills, and keep them alive. “It’s really interesting and people just love to see it, even simple things like churning butter.

The museum has a magical feel — rustic, calm and peaceful. When you walk through the gardens, the slab hut and around the machinery, almost two acres of grounds, you can almost hear history whirring behind the doors. “It’s something completely different; an eyeopening experience,” Chris said. “People are surprised, and they come out and say why didn’t I come here years ago. “As with any museum, you don’t know what’s behind the door but when you step inside there’s so many things to discover. “We’ve had people who stay all day because there’s so much to see.” The museum was opened more than 50 years ago, in October 1968, by renowned Australian painter Sir Russell Drysdale. The collection of historical items for general display includes beautiful china and glassware, fashion and accessories of yesteryear and furniture and fittings showcasing three different class structures of society at the time of settlement. There’s also a replica general store with all original fittings, fixtures and items for sale. Other popular displays include the highly acclaimed collection of local horse drawn vehicles and machinery, many of which were made at one of Jindera’s two blacksmiths.

“It inspires appreciation of times gone by, and makes people think of when things were so different. It also brings a new appreciation for people to see how life was lived.

You can choose to meander on your own following the signs and using the historic information you receive on arrival, or you could take advantage of a guided tour for an extra cost.

“It also brings back so many memories for people — memories of grandma’s house, or what their parents did.”

Fifteen years since entering and winning the famed Spirit of the Land Lockhart sculpture competition, Urana artist Andrew Whitehead has become a household name in the Riverina. Andrew describes himself as someone “who makes amazing public artworks for tiny towns across Australia”, and now has more than 20 sculptures spread across the country and even internationally. His first public work, ‘Not so itsy’ — a massive metal spider — still hangs proudly on the Urana water tower to this day. “I wanted to put it up on the local water tower, and the council said ‘sure, but you’ve got to do it yourself’,” he said. So Andrew climbed a 16 metre ladder, with a length of cable, to hang the arachnid. “Once it was up, it was like magic; work just started rolling in.” Andrew now has two public sculptures in Urana, and his work is also seen in Boree Creek, Ardlethan, Lockhart, Morundah, Mulwala, Wollombi, Tungamah, Shepparton, Katamatite and Coolamon. Two more will be added to the regional sculpture trails this year — one in Mooroopna, called the ‘Community Tree’, and in Jingellic which will pay tribute to a fireman who died defending the region in 2019.

For Andrew, the secret to his success is making his work a true and collaborative reflection of the town it’s in. “When I do work for a location, I like to involve the community in the artwork before they get it. “I get them to donate artefacts and things from their farms for the artworks. “In Muttaburra, I made a piece called the Shearer and the Ram. The sheep’s fleece was made of cogs. I engraved the names of all the children in the primary school next to the artwork into the fleece. “When they’re old, they can point that out to their own children. “In Jingellic, those artefacts will be recovered out of ashes of fires which destroyed homes. People from Jingellic are going to weld stuff up as well.” Andrew’s Urana spider has put the town on the map among a list of Australia’s ‘big things’. And he said it’s not the only town to get a tourism boost because of public art. “The little town of Morundah, for example. For three years they had a non-stop trickle of caravans and cars stopping for a photo, and there was instant economic improvement for the town,” he said. What’s On Autumn 2021 33

the lack of water posed a serious problem for the early settlers. The first practical suggestion for a town lake was put to a public meeting in March 1964. It took a further 10 years of planning, fundraising and overcoming the difficulties associated with power lines, telephone cables, town water pipes and the provision of alternative town drainage before the earth works commenced in February 1974. Finley Lake was officially opened in 1975 and since then has provided a welcome oasis for the weary traveller as well as being a venue for many and varied pursuits from fishing to bird watching, from sailing and canoeing to power boating and water skiing.

ENTERTAINMENT While autumn brings a cooler change, the sporting action heats up with the start of winter sporting competitions around the region. The Southern Riverina embraces its sporting culture with footy, netball, rugby and soccer seasons all starting, while other sports like golf and bowls continue. After sports seasons were put on hold due to the Coronavirus pandemic in 2020, now is the time to head to your local sporting clubs and show your support.

All other sides will start their season the following week on Saturday, April 10, along with the Hume District and Farrer Football Netball Leagues. The Golden Rivers Football & Netball League season will kick off on Saturday, April 17. The rugby union season will also start in April, with round one of the Southern Inland Rugby Union season kicking off on Saturday, April 10.

The Murray Football Netball League will start things off, with a special feature clash between Moama and the Deni Rams at Moama Recreation Reserve on Saturday, March 27.

On the soccer pitch, the Griffith & District Football Association season will start on April 24 and the following Saturday the Cobram Junior Soccer Association season will be up and running.

With a crowd of up to 3000 allowed at games, it serves as the perfect opportunity to see live footy and netball action for the first time since 2019.

Another major sporting event that will take place is the annual Deniliquin Lawn Tennis Club Western Riverina Championships Easter Tournament.

The following week will see round one for the rest of the competition with a full day of Good Friday clashes, including the Leo Barry-Tom Hawkins Cup clash between Finley and the Rams under lights at Finley Apex Sports & Community Centre.

The four-day event will see plenty of tennis action from Good Friday to Easter Monday.

The Picola & District League season will also kick off on Good Friday with the traditional clash between Tocumwal and Berrigan at Tocumwal Recreation Reserve.

The veteran events for players 45 years and older will be played on Saturday afternoon and the popular graded round robin events on Sunday and Monday.

There are 30 events scheduled with open knock out events, graded knock-out events and junior events in Under 14 and 16 on Friday and Saturday.

Wind your way through the Murrumbidgee Trails, over rolling hills to Lockhart and then follow the river red gum-lined banks of the ‘Bidgee to Narrandera and Darlington Point. Weave through the canals of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area to Leeton, and head south across the Yanco and Billabong creeks as you make your way to Jerilderie. You’ll stumble upon towns, villages and localities with names you’ve only heard of in songs and stories. You’ll discover the art out here is oversized, and the history is filled with quirky characters, unique stories and bucketloads of charm. This area is not just a filler on the map between the desert and Great Dividing Range, it is a destination in its own right.

Jerilderie The Kidman Way — popular with travellers on their way to the outback — begins here and the Newell Highway also passes through. You’ll step right in to Jerilderie’s country charm and hospitality on the banks of Billabong Creek. The inviting park-like thoroughfare honours the district’s World War I soldiers with a tree planted in memory of each. Look up and you’ll see the town’s namesake rising to the south of town. Yerong Creek Go at a slower pace with a leisurely drive to Yerong Creek, 15 minutes south of The Rock. Take in the history and charm of the ‘Vintage Village’ as you wander and pay a visit to the Chinese Crossing in Noskes Lane. This 1880s era dam wall features the stonework of Chinese migrants and was built to accumulate water for growing vegetables and opium.

Milbrulong A must-visit for twitchers and bird lovers, you’ll find the village of Milbrulong between Lockhart and The Rock. The town gets its name from the local Aboriginal word for ‘Rosella Parrot’, and while there admire the colourful mural and interpretive signs along the Rosella Walk. Don’t miss out on a peek at the Milbrulong Water Tower mural.

The Long Paddock is a unique touring route, which follows the 610 kilometres of the Cobb Highway (named after the famous coach company) from Echuca/Moama on the Victorian border, through the towns of Deniliquin, Hay and Wilcannia, leading to the outback towns of Bourke, Broken Hill and White Cliffs. Interpretive panels are located at significant sites along the Cobb Highway.
