October 2019
Get into it during October The annual Victorian Seniors Festival will take place once again throughout October. To celebrate the valuable contributions made by Victorians aged 60 and above, there are a number of events planned throughout Greater Shepparton and the rest of Victoria. The theme for the 2019 festival is ‘Get into it’ and is focused on encouraging older people to get out and about in their local community. A total of 32 activities and events will be held in Greater Shepparton for local seniors, with more than 2000 events taking place across the state. City of Greater Shepparton Mayor Kim O’Keeffe encouraged seniors to get involved. “The Victorian Seniors Festival helps our seniors stay involved and engaged in our community,” Cr O’Keeffe said. “Council is proud to support this wonderful event, which not only provides great entertainment,
but also encourages our Greater Shepparton seniors to live healthy and active lifestyles.” There is a wide range of local events, including cultural tours, nature tours, barefoot bowls, come-and-try days across a range of sporting and fitness programs, trivia and film screenings. Turn to page for full details of each event, including the booking deadline. For more information on the Victorian Seniors Festival visit seniorsonline.vic.gov.au or for local inquiries phone Greater Shepparton City Council on 5832 9785. Additionally, consult the Greater Shepparton City Council’s Seniors Festival Booklet. The booklet can be found online at greatershepparton.com.au, at council’s Welsford St offices and at local community hubs and agencies.

Jean Dahlberg isn’t slowing down anytime soon. Photographer: Megan Fisher.
Living life to the fullest Tucked away in her own slice of paradise in Shepparton’s Kensington Gardens, 88-year-old Jean Dahlberg leads a life that most half her age would envy. She makes a chocolate slice to die for; it is just one of the many baked goods from which heavenly aromas emanate in Jean’s kitchen on any given Wednesday. Jean also volunteers at Scot’s Opportunity Shop, dabbles in croquet, plays cards, exercises her green thumb and keeps her house in such immaculate condition you
would be forgiven for thinking it is a show home. After a family member caught her trying to climb a ladder with a broken shoulder four years ago, Jean moved into her pictureperfect paradise where, according to the sprightly Sheppartonian, “there is always something on”.
In between her scheduled home rehabilitation sessions Jean still drives, gets her own groceries and even finds time to visit her old mate upstairs on a Sunday. Up at seven o’clock every morning, she barely has enough daylight to get through all her daily duties before bed at 10.30 pm, but she makes sure to have her two pieces of
Choceur chocolate to stay fueled up. Having worked as a wrapper at the Shepparton News for 25 years and retiring in 1988, the self-proclaimed chocoholic makes sure there is never a dull moment in the day. “That’s what keeps me healthy and happy, and I wouldn’t have it any other way,” she said.

Growing strong friendships Not everyone plays a sport or wants to make something. Codgers Capers is there for men who would just like some company. Every Tuesday in the hall at the back of the Church of Christ on the corner of Nixon and Corio Sts, Shepparton, a group of men gather to chat, organise a bus trip, listen to a guest speaker or share a barbecue. Many of the members live alone after the loss of a partner, others just miss male companionship since their retirement. Although the group is open to any man aged over 18, the group has mainly older members — most of whom heard about the group through a friend. Codgers Capers groups are part of Australian Men’s Shed Association but don’t have — and don’t want — a shed.
They have about 25 garden beds in the narrow strip of backyard where some of the members enjoy growing lots of fruit and vegies. Excess produce is sold to the church community to buy more supplies for the garden. A specialised crew of four, cook up meals which are packaged and frozen for distribution to the needy in the community via local care agencies. Over the nine years the cooking program has been in operation they have prepared about 3500 meals. They are a mixed group of blokes with a
variety of backgrounds and experiences who love to “pick hell out of one another”. One of the four Grahams in the group said, “When I retired, I had nothing to do.” John, the barbecue chef, had moved from Melbourne after the loss of his partner and said the group was helping him rebuild his life.
He had even organised “a bit of a hippy bloke” to come and entertain them.
Roy joined the group after the loss of his wife and enjoys the cooking as well as the company.
Secretary David Baker said the group was always looking for new members and anyone feeling isolated or lonely was welcome to come down and give the group a try.
Peter obviously loves the garden and is proud of the produce they harvest from such a confined space.
Check out the group on it’s website, give David a call on 0419 307 005, or turn up on a Tuesday morning after 10 am.

Keeping fit at every age There are many benefits of exercise for those aged over 60, both physically and mentally. According to Aquamoves Shepparton gym floor and group fitness instructor Joe Gilberto, exercise is important for those aged over 50 because their muscles and bone mass begin to decline, even for those who are physically active. As a result of this, the ability to lose fat may be impacted. Muscle strength can be improved through the process of weight training; pushing or pulling something that requires effort.
“You only have to get someone say ‘come with me’ and you’ve got a new friend” Lyn Davidson
Joe said weight training could also help the skeletal system. “Lots of people say ‘I walk’,” he said. “I say what are you doing to look after your spine, neck, chest? “The skeletal system is mobile, without controlled weight training you will favour your dominant side.” Exercising also helps to build muscle memory, which Joe said was similar to other types of memory. It acts in a similar manner to a sudoku or crossword, which builds physical memory. Over-60s group fitness instructor Lyn Davidson said there were also social benefits of exercise, with many participants catching up for coffee after class. “Eighty per cent of people come to the gym for social reasons,” Lyn said. “You only have to get someone say ‘come with me’ and you’ve got a new friend.” Lyn said many participants claimed they felt better after attending the classes by getting their blood pumping. “I had one lady who didn’t want to get out of her car,” she said. “After an hour she was feeling fabulous.” During Victorian Seniors Festival, seniors can become a member of Aquamoves for a reduced rate. Aquamoves runs a range of exercise programs for seniors throughout the year. For more information, contact the centre.

Be part of the community When older people find themselves with time on their hands, many attend classes to learn new skills and a proportion of them become volunteers. It’s lunchtime at South Shepparton Community Centre and six women are sitting round the table sharing a tasty home-cooked lunch. Five of them are seniors and several are volunteer tutors and program organisers who help to keep the centre running and offering a rich and varied program. Seventy-three-year-old Val Roberts started coming to the community house after her husband died. “It gets me out of the house,” she said. Val now co-ordinates the Live, Love, Laugh program each term, arranging activities and guest speakers, and she also serves as vice-president on the community house committee. Gail Tulloch has only been in Shepparton for three years and found the community house a good way to make friends.
been volunteering at the community house for eight years. Diane appreciates the friendship. “We have lots of hugs around here,” she said. Gay Fleming has been involved with the art program for about six years and also helps with the teaching. Val summed up what they all get out of their time at the community house. “You go home feeling alive,” she said.

Bowling for a good life For many lawn bowlers there is no such thing as too much bowls and Joyce Johnson admits that she would play at least three times a week, sometimes more. Joyce, a very fit and sprightly 86-year-old, is a stalwart, in fact a life member, of Shepparton RSL bowls club. She has been bowling for 19 years, having taken it up after her husband died, and intends to keep playing as long as she can. “I don’t want to stop,” Joyce said. “I don’t want to sit at home.” Joyce also works on the match committee, organising club events and tournaments. “It’s my life, really.” Joyce said the social aspect of bowls was very good, and everyone who played got on well together.
The club enters teams in pennant competitions but also holds social matches. Joyce believes bowling helps her to stay fit, which was borne out by a speedy recovery from a recent knee reconstruction. RSL bowls club now plays at Shepparton Park in Kialla where the undercover greens allow play throughout the colder months. “The undercover is a big bonus,” Joyce said. “We played there right through the winter.” Joyce said she would encourage anyone to give bowls a go. “Come down and have a try. I’m sure you will like it.”
“It’s fantastic,” she said.

Many older members of Mooroopna Golf Club enjoy taking advantage of the quieter midweek days to get out for a hit and catchup with friends.
Playing 18 holes of golf involves a walk of at least 5 km and even if players ride in a golf buggy, they get a full body workout from swinging the clubs.
John Bartlett, 76, lives alone and usually plays on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
The physical activity and being out in nature are also good to relieve stress.
Jacob Van Zeist only plays midweek unless there is a serious competition (like the club championship) on the weekend.
Even with sore knees or hips most players are still able to get out and play golf.

University with no exams Members of the University of the Third Age (U3A) believe that retirement is the time to learn purely for pleasure. The tune being played by the ukulele group at the U3A hall is familiar, but the words are not.
President Allan Wilson said that U3A was “all about staving off the vagaries of old age.”
New lyrics to the Beach Boys song have been written by one of the members to create a song of praise for the U3A, and although the ukulele group is only in its ninth session, they are practising hard for wthe Christmas concert.
As part of Seniors’ Week U3A is holding a forum called ‘Live Life, Live Well. The Art of Growing Old Gracefully’ on Wednesday, October 16 at the U3A hall.
The U3A Hall in Essen St, Shepparton, is the site for lots of activities, from social lunches to craft groups, bridge games, different forms of exercise, computer classes and speakers on science, history and legal matters. The activities are arranged to meet the interests and needs of members, so can vary from year to year and can include trips out and about such as birdwatching, photography and industry tours.
“We live life better, for longer.”
Secretary Liz Lee, president Allan Wilson and course co-ordinator Greg Barnes.
The lead speaker will be Associate Professor Christina Bryant from Melbourne University who will speak on the topic ‘The Art and Science of Maintaining Wellbeing: Adding life to years, not just years to life.’ Other speakers will include Jeanette Powell, Lyn Davidson from Aquamoves Shepparton, Ray McDonald, and Greg Barnes, Goulburn Valley U3A course co-ordinator. Cost for the day is $10 and includes lunch and teas. Bookings are required. For inquiries phone 0409 703 868.

Enjoy a carefree lifestyle For retirees entering the next phase of life, staying in touch with others is just as important as ever. Maintaining social connections can boost the quality of living for senior citizens, but it often takes a back seat for those living independently.
Handily located near Shepparton East Bowling Club, and adjacent to Shepparton Marketplace, residents have easy access to necessary amenities.

Internal activities designed to encourage intercommunication are just some of the ways Harmony Village helps residents stay healthy and happy.
