Welcome to Seymour The animals are groomed, the food stalls are busily preparing and the gates are about to open for the 27th edition of the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. Held in the heart of Victoria at Kings Park in Seymour, event manager Susie Filleti said the expo would present the latest technology, practices and trends in small and backyard farming. It will also offer plenty of opportunities to get up close and personal with animals and enjoy the market-style shopping, food and entertainment. Ms Filleti said there were some must-see additions to this year’s entertainment line-up, including drone racing and working dog demonstrations,

while the Learning Hub schedule was jam-packed with informative talks. “One of the innovative ideas we’ll be exploring is industrial hemp farming,” Ms Filleti said. “The Hemp Building Company will be looking at how Australia’s housing crisis can be addressed using Hempcrete and demonstrate how it is used by building a doghouse during the event. “The Victorian Brumby Association will also host a talk about owning brumbies and capitalising on their versatility.” Crowd favourites Farmer Daryl and his band of animals, the Flipping Disc Dogz, Reptile Awareness Displays and the 2019 AWPA Victorian Whipcracking and Bullock Whip Championships are back.

The Country Kitchen and Butcher Shop are always a highlight, and Ms Filleti said the timetable of cooking demonstrations had been expanded. “This is your last chance to see Bob (the Butcher) Dewar in action alongside Secret Garden chef Adrian Hensley and new butcher Victor Bonacci,” she said. “They will cover everything from cooking with hemp to game meats.” Another must-not-miss addition is Happy Half Hour, where expo-goers can taste-test creations from Tooborac Hotel and Brewery, Bellarine Estate and Original Spirit Co.

Mayor is excited about expo’s return This year Seymour Alternative Farming Expo will celebrate its 27th anniversary, and almost 500 exhibitors are ready to wow an estimated crowd of 22!000. Mitchell Shire Mayor Bill Chisholm said the expo was one of Mitchell Shire’s most anticipated events, with demonstrations on all things from butchery to country cooking and much more. “The Seymour Alternative Farming Expo is one of the best ways for traditional and alternative farmers to come together in our municipality to learn from each other,” Cr Chisholm said. “With plenty of new techniques being shown off each year, it is great to see so many people come together to understand new technologies as farms and households embrace sustainable living and adapt to our unique environment. “Each year we see more and more children coming along to learn about the different ways people are

farming as the region continues to adapt to the changing world.” For Cr Chisholm, it is always exciting to see the range of exhibits and to see all of the different animals in the farmyard and at the reptile encounter. “I cannot wait for people to come down and experience what rural living has to offer,” he said. “With so many new, innovative ways to farm, I am excited for the 2019 Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. “Congratulations to all of the hardworking volunteers, staff and community members who have made this expo a success for nearly three decades.” With the expo bringing in more than $6#million annually to the local economy, Cr Chisholm is confident the event will continue to grow in the future.”

Undera dairy farmer Sarah Parker will give an informative talk about her farming journey.

Taking the leap from city to country Hear about one woman’s journey from city slicker to dairy farmer at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. Australian Women in Agriculture president Sarah Parker will share the challenges and rewards she experienced since moving from inner-city Brisbane to establish an Undera dairy farm with her husband Raymond. Ms Parker will outline the lessons learned and how naïve she was as a consumer before she became a

farmer and food producer, as well as working in food quality and milk supply management. The couple’s irrigated dairy farm Glencliffe is home to stud registered Illawarra and Holstein herds supplying milk to a boutique Italian cheese company. As well as showing Illawarra cattle at events such as International Dairy Week, the couple is actively involved in the industry at various levels. Ms Parker said they were both very committed to their industry, agriculture and community and

Another element of her talk will be the importance of organisations such as Australian Women in Agriculture providing support along the way. The organisation, which held its annual conference in Shepparton last year, is committed to ensuring women influence the agriculture agenda. It aims to promote the advancement

of women in agriculture by raising the profile of women in agriculture, addressing inequities and securing local, regional and international recognition. It ensures members are informed of various issues as the organisation attempts to influence decision making at all levels. Ms Parker will speak in the Learning Hub on Sunday, February 17 at 3"pm.

Railways past and present Seymour has a proud railway history. The Black Train, a preserved steam locomotive built in 1913, sits in J.W. Elliot Reserve, between the railway and the Goulburn Valley Hwy. The Seymour Railway Heritage Centre houses royal carriages and the

Military history

The Goulburn River around Seymour is a great place for walking, kayaking and picnicking. The Seymour Town Trail is a 2.5!km gravel path beside the river with seats to enjoy the views and some good fishing spots. At Goulburn Park there are public toilets, barbecues and a playground.

For visitors who would like to combine a train ride with glorious views of the upper Goulburn Valley, Kerrisdale Mountain Railway is a narrow-gauge line about 25 minutes from Seymour. The railway runs each Sunday and by appointment. The friendly and enthusiastic volunteers also give demonstrations of the engines in the shed and sell refreshments at the kiosk.

ANIMALS The Seymour Alternative Farming Expo is an opportunity to get acquainted with out-of-the-ordinary animals. That’s exactly what drew Ann and Rod Sales to the event more than two decades ago. Looking for a change of scenery, it was here they found alpacas and swapped city life for the countryside. “We came from the suburbs and it’s a great way to find an alternative to living in the city,” Mrs Sales said. “We bought 40 acres (16"ha) and had to work out what to do with it.”

After buying five alpacas, Davidalla Farm Alpacas was born and has become a regular expo exhibitor. Alongside the alpacas there will be a menagerie of animals including horned Highland bulls, Wiltshire Horn sheep and brumbies. O’Loghlin Wiltshire’s Jason O’Loghlin said the event was the place to learn more about non-traditional breeds. “Most people are open to ideas when they

are at the expo,” Mr O’Loghlin said. “We’re there to talk to people and answer their questions.” There will also be a flock of poultry at the Poultry Shed. “You can come in and walk around, pick and buy the one you want and then go explore the rest of the expo and pick them up at the end of the day,” Seymour Poultry Club president Enola Halpin said.

The country lifestyle Huacaya alpacas have made life on the land simple for former city folk Ann and Rod Sales. “We found alpacas and they seemed like the perfect animal,” Mrs Sales said. “They were so easy"—"they don’t demand much of us or the land. “We shear our own"—"we decided if we were going to have them we wanted to do everything.” Starting with five alpacas, the Davidalla Farm Alpacas’ herd has now grown to 97 with a focus on breeding quality white fleeces. A boutique breed These Scottish natives are more than just a pretty face. SeaView Highland Cattle co-owner Gavin Fletcher and his band of horned Highland bulls will be educating the crowd on the adorable alternative to mainstream beef cattle. “What we’re presenting is a really good animal for small acreage and farm stays to larger hobby farms,” Mr Fletcher said. “They’re a very easy-to-manage animal in relation to breeding practises and birthweights and also their adaptability to climates and geography. “The versatility within the animals also gives you a secondary market in hides and horns.” Located in the Cattle Pavilion.

Bucking expectations Get up close and personal with a not-so-wild brumby. Victorian Brumby Association president Colleen O’Brien is determined to change people’s perspectives of the breed. “It’s really important to show people their importance in the ecosystem and their huge potential as domestic horses,” Ms O’Brien said. “People expect wild behaviour from a wild horse but we don’t get that when they’re trained correctly. “They’re sweet and they love to be around people.” Having rescued about 500 brumbies over the past decade, the association rehabilitates, trains and rehomes brumbies, with many going into trail riding and riding clubs. A whip-cracking good time

Max Kamp from South Australia is the current AWPA Australian Juvenile Whip-cracking Champion.

That distinctive sound of a whip crack is not the sound of the whip hitting the ground. It is not even the sound of the whip bending and flicking though the air. It is actually the sound of a skilled sportsperson breaking the sound barrier. Australian Whipcrackers and Plaiters Association secretary Simon Martin said they were expecting about 40 people, aged anywhere from two to 70, to participate in the AWPA Victorian championships and help send the sound of these impressive cracks through the air this year. Spectators will be able to enjoy all the crowd favourites, including the freestyle whip crack, as the competitors do their thing on the main oval from about 10!am to 4!pm on Saturday.

Let’s get crafty The kids will be sure to bring home a couple of new friends from this year’s expo!—!after they get creative, that is. They will be able to grow their own grasshead, create a pet rock and give their artistic side a chance to shine at the Craigieburn Kids Activities Bunnings exhibit. Located in the Kids’ Corner, the free arts activities will be available from Friday to Sunday, 10!am to noon and 1!pm to 3!pm.

If you have ever wanted to know what it feels like to soar like an eagle you can get a taste of speed from the comfort of your chair on Friday. Dave Crepaldi will be bringing enough drones to the expo for kids and adults alike to have a go at the sport. “It’s an out-of-body experience because you’re sitting down in a chair using your reflexes, adrenalin, control and focus to pilot this 250!mm drone around at speeds of up to 200!km an hour and you’re freaking out because it feels like you are the one flying,” Mr Crepaldi said. Up to four people at a time will have the chance to have a go at piloting a drone during demonstrations throughout the day.

Canine stars flip-out World firsts and a heart-warming four-paw high-five are all in a day’s work for the eight gorgeous border collies performing as part of the Flipping Disc Dogz show. Crazy Daisy will perform a flip and catch a frisbee for the first time in front of a live audience, Amazing Ava will tread the balance beam in a walking handstand and Mickey Mouse will attempt a world recordbreaking stunt of jumping over the most people to catch a frisbee. The 30-minute shows will run three times a day on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 10.15!am, 12.15!pm and 2.15!pm.

Putting fun in the farmyard Farmer Darryl is more than just a guy who brings some farm animals along for people to pat. Farmer Darryl’s Mobile Animal Farm will have seven piglets, baby rabbits, ducklings, chicks, lambs, kids and all their mammas, as well as Macca the alpaca, Polly the parrot and Freda the bottle-fed calf.

But there will also be Farmer Darryl’s special kind of ‘extra’ with cute farmyard props, shearing demonstrations, wool spinning and book readings. Farmer Darryl will hold a daily story time with Polly the parrot at 11.30#am and daily shearing demonstrations at 3#pm.

Snakes alive Allan Burnett from Reptile Awareness Displays of Australia is all about keeping people safe. Mr Burnett will be doing his bit to arm people with all the facts about reptiles with half-hourly presentations running from 10#am to 4#pm. For those who want to live a little more dangerously, there will be plenty of opportunity to get up close and personal with a few different lizards and pythons. If you want to know which snakes to avoid, Mr Burnett will display five of the world’s top 10 most venomous snakes#—#an inland taipan, common or eastern brown, coastal taipan, tiger and a death adder.

Allan Burnett will give everyone a general overview of all things that slither.

Farmers and dog lovers alike are sure to be delighted with the trio of dog breeds on show as part of Dave Sharp’s working dog demonstration this year. A working dog trainer and retired farmer, Mr Sharp will be bringing three different breeds of dogs to the expo#—#a smooth-haired border collie, kelpie, and a Tasmanian Smithfield. The demonstrations will highlight the

way different dogs work, how to train them and how to cast. “Every breed works differently, even different dogs from the same litter that are all the same breed work differently,” Mr Sharp said. The demonstrations will run for about 30 minutes at 11#am, 1#pm and 3#pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The future of farming In years past, a career in agriculture was fairly limited, with job opportunities primarily reserved for those who had grown up in rural and remote areas.

Third generation farmer Theresa Hicks has benefited from GOTAFE’s agriculture courses.

The Victorian Government has made a significant investment in agriculture as an area of growth, with a host of free agriculture TAFE courses being offered in 2019. With the Australian population continuing to grow, technology is integrating its way into the day-to-day operation of the agricultural sector. Drones, virtual fencing, computerised irrigation networks, remote monitoring of body conditions and GPS-driven tractors are just some of the innovations appearing in the industry, creating exciting opportunities for workers. With industry innovations continuing to evolve, education and qualification opportunities are equipping the new generation with the tools to excel in this evolving sector. Darren Payne, commercial manager of agriculture at GOTAFE, said there had been

much evolution in traditional farming. “We have noticed an influx of farmers keen to upskill their workforce,” Mr Payne said. “In dairy for example, there have been many advances in recent years, which are used for monitoring the reproductive activity, health and welfare status of dairy cows. “This information is allowing their businesses to further facilitate their expansion, and remain competitive in a local and even global market.” Theresa Hicks is a third generation farmer who sought industry education and qualifications. “It has been fantastic,” Ms Hicks said. “It really teaches you what you need to focus on to become more productive and to be more profitable. I am certain I wouldn’t be at the stage I am today without it. “GOTAFE was a really positive experience in my life. Having that support, especially when making big decisions with new infrastructure, has changed the way I approach farm management. “There is so much importance in keeping choices business minded when evolving management practices.” GOTAFE offers qualifications in a number of agricultural streams with trainers boasting varied experience in the farming of sheep, cropping, pork and cattle. Free TAFE in 2019 will provide a platform to ensure the industry grasps evolving practices as technologies arise.

Small farms need water too Small farms, like all farms, feel the pinch during drought and there are plenty of Queensland and NSW properties in the sector that have already destocked as they wait for rain. In many cases this is not necessarily a make-or-break decision in the livestock sector but, as it would be the most diverse part of Australian agriculture, it remains vulnerable to market factors as much as its broadacre cousins. Often access to irrigation water is critical for small but intensive enterprises!—!orchards of fruit and nuts, vineyards and everything else that grows. In recent months Small Farms magazine has covered heritage sheep breeds, obscure varieties of pigs and goats, walked through an emu farm, checked out hydroponic lettuce and rubbed shoulders with those in horticulture and floriculture. And they all talk water. Increasingly they focus on two areas!—!the ability to separate water from the land and the havoc they see being wrought by the Murray-Darling Basin Plan. The first part remains one of the great tragedies of Australian agriculture.

Once sold the chances of ever being able to recuperate the lost production potential is slim. Once it is in the hands of speculators and government it is a ball-game way beyond the means of most. Once upon a time we had governments that valued the people on the land, the ones who actually feed, and to a certain extent, clothe the country. Now successive Federal Governments rubber-stamp the sale of prime country to overseas interests where governments are working overtime to guarantee food security. Australia’s small farmers work at the cutting edge of innovation, of marketing and of a passion for the work they do. From the production of wakame to the breeding of hypo-allergenic horses for the sneezy and wheezy among us. None of them are big business, otherwise they would not appear in Small Farms, but they are good businesses and they are a micro-economy that right now is sharing the pain with the big boys on their big stations. Building support for droughtstricken farmers THE Shed Company Kilmore is donating a $17!030 shed to the Burrumbuttock Hay Runners at this year’s Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. The business has been supplying and constructing sheds, carports and patios in Victoria since 2010 and is making its debut at this year’s expo. In the lead-up to the event the business will be constructing a 7.5 by 12!m display shed with attached carport, aka the Garaport, on its exhibitor site near the cattle pavilion. Are you Fire Ready? How to Burn off Safely information sessions Preparing your property for the fire season can sometimes be problematic, especially on larger properties and farm land. Much of this preparation usually results in large piles of debris or vegetation which needs to be burnt off or disposed of. In some cases a property owner may identify small areas of land that may benefit from being burnt or having some other type of fuel reduction treatment. At this year’s Alternative Farming Expo, CFA will be running short information sessions for property owners on how to safely burn off piles of vegetation or small areas of land to help manage fire risk. Topics covered in each session include: • • • • • •

What is vegetation management Burning Off — Can I? Can’t I? Legal requirements and obligations Physical requirements Alternative treatments What is cross tenure burning

Sessions take approximately 20 minutes and will be conducted each day at 9.30 am, 11.30 am, 1.30 pm and 3.30 pm at the CFA stand at site L1 (at the end of the green exhibition shed)

Home fires can occur at any time of the year and in many cases result in precious lives lost. Many of these fatalities could have been prevented if the home was suitably fitted with a working smoke alarm.

while you are asleep and the instant it detects smoke particles in the air it activates, waking you and your family. But it’s not just the battery we need to check! Smoke alarms have a 10 year life span. The components that monitor the air inside your smoke detector deteriorate over time and lose their sensitivity, therefore reducing its ability to alert you to a fire in your home. All smoke alarms should have a date

of manufacture on the back of them, even hard wired smoke alarms. This should be checked and if the unit is 10 or more years old then it should be replaced. Fire Danger Ratings tell you how bad a fire would be if one started. As part of your plan, you need to decide which rating is your trigger to leave early.

Everything old is new again with hemp and its fascinating range of uses from clothing to building and eating. Country Kitchen chefs will even be cooking hemp biscuits and pastry at 9.45!am on Friday, while hemp will be the topic of conversation in the Learning Hub with talks on ‘Farming with Hemp’ and ‘Hempcrete: Addressing Australia’s housing crisis’.

Wayne Lording will give his insights into how to save time and money!—!whether it be through the practical farming applications of drones, or the easy-tointroduce green energy methods that have been saving his family some serious money. “People don’t realise that if you dig down 500!mm the temperature is always 16.8 degrees and you can put in underground systems to harness that and cool and heat

your home. Mum and Dad live in the family home and it’s always absolutely beautiful inside,” Mr Lording said. “It’s very simple to do; anyone can do what we’ve done.” Mr Lording will be at the Learning Hub talking about the farming applications of drones at 11!am on Saturday and sustainable farming using green energy at 2!pm on Saturday.

Developed by Casterton engineer Rod Davidson to replace the traditional fencing staple, Davo’s Fencing Clip saved a lot of time and physical strain because it could be installed utilising a standard drill, Nicole Davidson said. Wayne Lording will be sharing how what started as “something fun to do” with his father has turned into an epic energy-efficiency success story for the family property, Lording

Estate, near Yea. The father and son duo decided to see how energy efficient they could make the property with solar panels, solar vacuum hot water, LED lighting and geothermal heating and cooling. “We made the money back with savings inside four years,” Mr Lording said.

“It’s on the grid and the largest quarterly power bill we’ve had since was $19.” Mr Lording will be at the Learning Hub to talk about the farming applications of drones at 11!am on Saturday and sustainable farming using green energy at 2!pm on Saturday.

If you are struggling with soil erosion and want an environmentally-friendly solution, the team from Geohex Erosion Control System will be on site every day to answer all of your questions. Rodney Garwood and his team from Geohex will be setting up their product around the exhibit to you can check it out up close before committing to buy. “It’s a great solution to stop the ruts in your roads and the bogs around the troughs,” he said. “It’s Australian-made and 100 per cent recycled and recyclable plastic and it has a really high load-bearing capacity, so it can take use in a high-traffic area.” Located at C7.

Gippsland landholder Carol Timothy planted 5000 TreeProject seedlings to improve water retention and provide shelter belts for her cattle.

Growing a sustainable future TreeProject is helping us all grow a future we can live with. A non-profit volunteer organisation that provides low-cost native seedlings to landholders, Tree Project will be promoting its volunteer service over the expo’s three days. Operating since 1989, TreeProject volunteers grow indigenous seedlings including trees, shrubs and grasses for individuals and Landcare groups. Volunteer growers are provided with growing kits"—"complete with seeds, potting mix, tubes, boxes, fertiliser and instructions to take home. When the seedlings are ready, all the

landholders have to do is organise with their volunteer growers to pick up their seedlings. The seedlings gave farmers a costeffective method of improving their pastures, retaining water and reducing the potential spread of grassfires though dense growth. Seedlings cost $220 per 500 seedlings and orders close at the end of September each year. TreeProject will be promoting its volunteer service for the June-August 2020 planting season. FOOD & DRINK The Seymour Alternative Farming Expo is a foodie’s delight. The Country Kitchen and Butcher Shop are always a highlight, offering an action-packed schedule of demonstrations during the three-day event. While event stalwart Bob (the Butcher) Dewar is hanging up his cleaver for the last time, he will join Secret Garden chef Adrian Hensley and new butcher Victor Bonacci for three final sessions. Together they will elaborate on the

ever-popular steak session, create a loaf of sourdough from scratch"—"a process that normally takes three weeks"—"and smoke a whole leg of ham ready to dig into during the last session of the day. James Mele from The Meatroom will join the team to demonstrate how to make salami and sausages. Even the children will be entertained with father-daughter duo Mr Hensley

and Lila showcasing their cheesecakemaking skills on Saturday. A not-so-kid-friendly addition to this year’s expo is the Happy Half Hour where Tooborac Hotel and Brewery, Bellarine Estate and Original Spirit Co will serve up a tasting of their wares. There will also be plenty of options for a refreshing drink from the Food Court with an extensive range of craft spirits, beer, cider and alcoholic ginger beer.

Bringing butchery back After a standout debut at last year’s event, Victory Meats’ Victor Bonacci is back. The butcher is passionate about teaching people the big process involved in getting a steak on their plate. “It’s about making people see that butchery isn’t just cutting into an animal, it’s an art,” Mr Bonacci said. “It’s great for people to actually see it

being prepared, cut and trimmed and then actually used.” Mr Bonacci will show the crowd what it takes to break up a carcass, explain how to get bang for your buck with secondary cuts and introduce them to a range of uses for game meats including kangaroo and venison. “It’s about getting the best out of the carcass – we’re not wasteful,” he said.

The Italian job Adding its unique Italian flavour to Butcher Shop, The Meatroom will host salami and sausage-making demonstrations. Co-owner James Mele said it was about keeping the tradition alive and sharing it with others. “They’ll learn some traditional techniques and some we’ve put our own spin on, fat to meat ratios, salting, seasoning and how to make it safely,” Mr Mele said. For those who don’t pick up the tricks of the trade, The Meatroom will also offer taste-tests and sales of their smallbatch salami. “It’s all handmade, we select the pigs ourselves#—#it’s all about the quality of the meat,” he said.
